[Bug 1211571] [NEW] black screen when trying to boot into installer or live environment

2013-08-12 Thread waspinator
Public bug reported:

Created a Live USB using LinuxLive USB Creator in Windows. It boots fine
on other computers.

When booting the system with the Live USB a cursor blinks on the top
left for a couple seconds and then the screen goes dark. I've tried
waiting for a few minutes, but nothing else happens.

Windows 7 and 8 work fine. Also tried Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, which is
based on Ubuntu 12.04 and it also works.

Is there any way I can gather more data to see what's going on with
Ubuntu?

Summary:
Windows 7: WORKS
Windows 8: WORKS
Elementary OS Luna: WORKS
Ubuntu 12.04.2: DOESN'T WORK
Ubuntu 13.04: DOESN'T WORK
Ubuntu 13.10 daily: DOESN'T WORK

System:
Alienware 14
CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-4700MQ
GPU 1: Intel® HD Graphics 4600
GPU 2: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M
RAM: 8GB Dual Channel DDR3L at 1600MHz

[Bug 1078487] Re: usb creator crashes after asking for password

2012-11-14 Thread waspinator
You're telling me that crashing because of an incorrect password is the
expected behaviour? How is this acceptable in any circumstance? Never
mind the fact that it doesn't say which password it wants. I only have
one user account on this computer, and so only one password I know of.

The bottom line is that usb creator shouldn't crash even if entered the
wrong password.

[Bug 1078487] [NEW] usb creator crashes after asking for password

2012-11-13 Thread waspinator
Public bug reported:

Using the USB creator to create a startup disk of ubuntu 12.10 32bit.

USB creator asks for a password because of a "System policy prevents installing
the bootloader". (I do not remember setting any such policy, and the details do
not give any instructions on where you change system policy in System Settings.)

I assume that it wants my login password, although it does not say that
anywhere. I input my password and then a window pops up that says "The
application Startup Disk Creator has closed unexpectedly". I have
attempted to relaunch it several times and redo the operation without
success.

I am disappointed that it is easier to make a start up disk for ubuntu
in windows using http://www.linuxliveusb.com .

I'm on Ubuntu 12.10 (x86 as recommended).

copying files to a USB3 stick formatted as FAT gives me ~32MB/s. Same
USB3 stick formatted as NTFS gives me ~1MB/s.

[Bug 1067188] [NEW] clicking on settings in software updater takes 15 seconds to show

2012-10-15 Thread waspinator
Public bug reported:

After checking for software updates on ubuntu 12.10 there are two
buttons shown in software updater.

"Settings..." and "OK"

clicking on "Settings..." takes 15 seconds for anything to happen. The
window greys out, and then you have to wait ~15 seconds for the settings
window to appear. This SHOULD be an instant operation, but if that's not
possible, a progress bar during loading would help. (to comply with
Nielsen's first heuristic)

The package is also incorrectly named as "update-manager" instead of
"software-updater", but that's another bug...

[Bug 1067174] [NEW] Aero Snap does not work

2012-10-15 Thread waspinator
Public bug reported:

"Aero Snap - Clicking and dragging a window to the right or left side of
the desktop causes the window to fill the respective half of the screen.
Snapping a window to the top of the desktop maximizes it. Resizing a
window to touch the top or bottom edge of the screen maximizes the
window to full height, whilst retaining its width; these windows will
then slide horizontally if moved by the title bar, or can be pulled off,
which returns the window to its original height." - wikipedia

in 12.10 it only works sporadically.

[Bug 647466] Re: gcalctool window is not resizable

2010-10-14 Thread waspinator
When I'm using the calculator on my touchscreen I maximize it. It
doesn't look pretty, but at least it's easy to press the buttons. I like
your idea of having a "large button" mode. Maybe it could be renamed to
"touch" mode though. All applications should start preparing for being
used with touch, since it's the direction we seem to be going in.

For illustration purposes here is the difference in button sizes of the 2
versions.

[Bug 634571] Re: vinagre fails to connect to any VNC server

2010-10-03 Thread waspinator
@Williamson: I'm sorry if I sounded ungrateful for the hard work of all
those involved in Ubuntu, because that's the exact opposite of what I
am. I am very grateful, but obvious show stopping bugs like this,
prevent Ubuntu from looking professional and showcasing all the other
great things that do work. I think we can agree that it is better to
have fewer features that work, than many features which do not. If there
aren't enough developers to support the 'extra' apps like vinagre, maybe
the Ubuntu team shouldn't commit to having them as part of the default
package set, and focus on a smaller, but polished selection.

"No guarantees"? Why would ubuntu include an application that cannot do
it's most basic thing in a final release? That's just a waste of space
on the CD. I would really hope that at least the basics work after
installing ubuntu.
