[Bug 1307552] Re: USB won't mount Samsung Convoy 3 phone

apport information

** Description changed:

This flip phone has a 32 gig SD card but does not AFIK use Android.
There is a USB menu but the only option is USB Mass Storage. I
believe however it uses MTP. I do have a camera that mounts MTP OK so
that is working. The problem is similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/151094 but I got no help there.
Samsung support is useless, they only speak windows.

[Bug 1307552] Re: USB won't mount Samsung Convoy 3 phone

2014-04-20 Thread wb8nbs
Booted the 14.04 build from Sunday April 20. Still no mount of sdb1 or
sdc1.

Needed to apt-get python-apport to get the report to work.
Saw this error message:

(process:4241): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size
== 0' failed
dpkg-query: no packages found matching linux

But this is the first time I've seen the screen backlight adjust keys work. I
will be upgrading soon to 14.04 because of this.

Are you sure 3.15 is the right kernel to test? This is normally running

[Bug 1307552] [NEW] USB won't mount Samsung Convoy 3 phone

2014-04-14 Thread wb8nbs
Public bug reported:

This flip phone has a 32 gig SD card but does not AFIK use Android.
There is a USB menu but the only option is USB Mass Storage. I
believe however it uses MTP. I do have a camera that mounts MTP OK so
that is working. The problem is similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/151094 but I got no help there.
Samsung support is useless, they only speak windows.

[Bug 1165590] Re: Unable to adjust backlight brightness after upgrade to raring - Asus UX32VD

2013-06-24 Thread wb8nbs
I have an Asus N56VJ that exhibited the same behavior on 12.10. I
installed kernel 3.7.0-7 from Xorg-edgers and the F5-F6 backlight keys
now work correctly. I consider the backlight adjustment to be critical
as in a dimly lit room, the screen is so bright it hurts your eyes.

I tried a 13.04 live distro from one of the magazine DVDs. Activating
the backlight keys showed the previous incorrect behaviour as described
in this bug.

The Bios on this N56VJ is verion 203 and that is the only one shown on
the Asus web site. I asked Asus support if there was a 214 update for
this model and they said no.

So I will not be doing 13.04.

[Bug 682198] Re: Keyboard backlight does not function under Ubuntu - workaround needed

2012-11-29 Thread wb8nbs
With the 12.10 kernel 3.5, very function key worked on my Asus N56VJ
except F5, F6 screen backlight. This morning a routine update installed
kernel 3.7 and now F5, F6 work but will only adjust within about the top
ten percent of brightness.

[Bug 477430] Re: grub 2 error: out of disk. failed to boot default entries. press any key to continue...

2011-12-24 Thread wb8nbs
I just spent several days trying to install 10.04 NBR on a Thinkpad 770Z
(circa 1999). The machine was running SuSE 10.3 and would not run the
Arduino IDE and refused to connect to my wireless AP with anything but
bare WEP. I collected several hard drives so I could experiment while
not disturbing the 40 gig SuSE disk. I tried Puppy and a couple
versions of Vector but the distro that worked best was Ubuntu 10.04
Netbook Remix. I installed that from a magazine DVD on one of the spare
drives and got WPA2 and Arduino 1.0 working with not too much trouble.
I used xorg.conf from the SuSE 10.3 install to get 1280x1024 display.

Then started in on the 40G Fujitsu drive. It had 6 partitions, win98,
swap, /, /usr, /boot and /home. I kept win98 and /home but used the
installer gparted to merge /, /usr and /boot. Drive would not boot
Grub said out of disk and dropped to rescue mode. An ls showed the
correct partitions including (Hd0,5) which was where / was installed but
ls (hd0,5)/boot gave the outof disk message. Read the release note
about cylinder alignment, then backed up /home and tried deleting all
the linux partitions and rebuilt them with gparted still leaving the
win98 alone. out of disk error. Backed up win98 files and deleted
and rebuilt ALL the partitions with gparted. Still out of disk after
the install. I noted gparted, cfdisk and fdisk each gave different
reports when looking at the partitioning in each one of these steps.
What finally gave me a bootable disk was deleting all partitions and
rebuilding with good old fdisk. I think I installed 10.04 NBR six times
during this (minimum one hour for an install).

I have a gadget to plug a second hard drive into the CDROM slot on this
laptop so in each of the iterations I was able to boot from the spare
disk, mount the installed system partition on the 40 gig disk. and
examine the files. In all cases I was able to access all information on
the non-booting drive. Since grub2 consistently gave out of disk when
attempting to ls the boot directory after a failed start, I can only
conclude that this is a deficiency in grub.

[Bug 292214] Re: Xinerama broken since intrepid on MGA

2010-09-25 Thread wb8nbs
I've worked around this problem by E-Baying a newer Nvidia GeFORCE-
FX5200 card which does do dual monitors OK with the NVidia supplied
driver.

I'm willing to move the Matrox 450 back into the PC if you need
something tested.

Thanks Michiel - that found the module. What is the point of compiling into a
hidden directory??
But on copying to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ the server immediately crashed
and would not restart on a reboot.
The log file shows a bus error -- attached.

[Bug 70739] Re: CPU fans won't start for Thinkpad 770E and 390E

2008-01-15 Thread wb8nbs
Last weekend I installed Ubuntu 6.06 on this 770E. I can tell you how I
dealt with the fan. This was worked out a year or so ago on a Vector
installation which also would not start the fan.

1. force acpi on by editing acpi=force to the end of the kernel line in
/boot/grub/menu.lst.
  My kernel line looks like:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-29-386 root=/dev/hda2 ro acpi=force
I took out the quiet splash parameters so I could watch what's going on at
boot time. Beware of automatic system updates rewriting the menu.lst file and
erasing your change.

2. Add the line echo 0 /proc/acpi/fan/FN00/state to the end of
/etc/rc.local file.
Reboot and the fan will be running continuously but at a almost inaudible slow
speed. It starts up about time the desktop is loaded. Crude fix but good
enough for me.

BTW I also have a 770Z and the fan works automatically on it.

Now if I could only get the sound to work.
