[Bug 1971114] Re: Ubuntu 22.04 python3-grpcio causes some apps to use 100% of the CPU

2022-05-05 Thread Michael Webster
I get similar behavior with Warpinator
(https://github.com/linuxmint/warpinator/issues/127).

In this particular case, it causes a complete lock of the program.

Same symptom - 100% on a core. Using the pip grpcio version also
resolves the issue.

[Bug 1944711] Re: restarting systemd-logind loses all existing sessions

2021-12-29 Thread Michael Webster
Seems good to me, no more broken sessions after resuming, loginctl list
commands always output as expected. Checking org.freedesktop.login1 with
d-feet correctly shows sessions and users.

One issue I noticed, which I at first assumed was related to this issue,
is I will occasional lose my network on resume. Since this still occurs
with ubuntu3.14 perhaps they aren't related after all. Ignore this noise
if so, sorry.

[Bug 1896798] [NEW] Needs --disable-sse2 flag for Vortex86

2020-09-23 Thread Chris Webster
Public bug reported:

Greetings,
I am using Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS as provided by Winsystems for their Vortex83DX3
PC104 board. This is an i686 architecture CPU.

ads@vortex:~/src$ apt-cache policy libxerces-c3.1
libxerces-c3.1:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 3.1.3+debian-1
  Version table:
 3.1.3+debian-1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe i386 Packages

Our software package uses xerces-c extensively for configuration and has
worked for 10+ years on arm/jessie and x86/redhat. I was receiving a core dump
in the xerces library while evaluating the Vortex86 as a replacement CPU. In
debugging the issue I built xerces-c from source. Long and short it works fine
if I add the --disable-sse2 flag to the configure script.

  1. I am not sure whether the maintainers (you?) are willing to re-
deploy with that flag

  2. if not, we have an internal debian repository, and I am willing to
package it ourselves for ourselves.

Regards,
Chris

[Bug 1836858] Re: Display flickers (monitor loses signal briefly) during "flickerfree" boot, while showing the BIOS logo on a black background

2020-06-09 Thread Michael Webster
Just throwing this into the ring...

try replacing $vt_handoff in the grub kernel line with vt.handoff=1
(from 18.04 to 20.04 it seems to have been changed from 1 to 7 to make
the handoff to plymouth more fluid as it loads its own copy of the
firmware splash to draw on).

[Bug 1419563] Re: Keyboard CTRL, ALT and SUPER keys binded as SHIFT

2015-02-11 Thread Michael Webster
I'm not sure there's a lot we can do - you can't re-map the keys (the
obvious workaround) because they're sending identical codes. A quick
google for sonix usb keyboard linux gives a number of
similar/duplicate issues, with no resolution.

a) Try a different kernel version - this could be a regression on the kernel
you're using, maybe try up/downgrading it.
b) Return the keyboard? (not sure this is possible, but I'd attempt to if it
is) and buy a different one.

[Bug 1366790] Re: Fix for CVE-2014-1949 (GTK 3.10.x)

2014-09-08 Thread Michael Webster
So, GTK3 apps that use context menus shouldn't be fixed to avoid a
cascade of menus popping up if they use their menu key?

Did you read beyond cinnamon?

Should I open a new bug that doesn't say 'security issue'?

[Bug 1194795] Re: Sound menu music seeker in cinnamon counts seconds too quickly

2014-07-20 Thread Michael Webster
Hi, I've done a lot of work recently on the sound applet, any chance you
could try the new version and see if this still happens?

you should be able to take this file:
https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/blob/master/files/usr/share/cinnamon/applets/sound%40cinnamon.org/applet.js

And replace what's currently in
/usr/share/cinnamon/applets/so...@cinnamon.org/applet.js

(You should back that file up first)

Thanks

Also seen on the 3.13.0-30 kernel. Flagged bugs #1327012, #1334539 and

ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid.; \

missing.;\

Likewise, resolved with the following:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-331

[Bug 1334377] [NEW] PLEASE REMOVE THIS PACKAGE (OBSOLETE/UNSUPPORTED)

2014-06-25 Thread Michael Webster
Public bug reported:

Hi, I'm one of the upstream maintainers of this package (with Linux
Mint).

This particular package is extremely out-of-date, and is currently
unmaintained (We provide a PPA for up-to-date builds of these packages).

Unfortunately, unwitting Ubuntu users either:

a) Install this obsolete package and encounter bugs that won't ever get fixed,
or are caused by newer versions of Gtk+ 3 (for example)
b) Install the PPA version but think this page is for support of that version.

And on top of it all, they have a (rightful) expectation of some sort of
support on this distribution when there is none.

I know there are efforts being made in Debian currently, to provide up-
to-date packages (new maintainer), but that could take some time, is by
no means a sure thing, and in the meantime, I'd prefer this page didn't
even exist, or at least the package removed and the page made
effectively read-only.

Thank you.

[Bug 1319990] Re: Mint 17: Evolution headers have a black backgorund

2014-05-15 Thread Michael Webster
Ok, I think this is actually a missing style in the stock Mint GTK
theme. For a temporary workaround you can try a different theme by
going to the 3rd tab of the Theme settings page, and changing the
'Controls' setting.

I tried a number of different ones and they all rendered this pane
correctly.

[Bug 1316613] [NEW] com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode corrupts gtk3 apps in non-Unity desktops

2014-05-06 Thread Michael Webster
Public bug reported:

This setting needs to be 'normal' for non-Unity desktops (i.e. Gnome-
Shell, Cinnamon) or else background color corruption occurs in certain
widgets (I suspect maybe the GtkScrolledWindow widgets?)

See pictures here:

https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/2771

Nothing immediately jumps out at me in the quilt patches, but I will
investigate further and see if I can troubleshoot this as well.

[Bug 1316613] Re: com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode corrupts gtk3 apps in non-Unity desktops

2014-05-06 Thread Michael Webster
I've discovered the package: overlay-scrollbar, and the file: os-
scrollbar.c is implementing this.

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/trusty/overlay-
scrollbar/trusty/view/head:/os/os-scrollbar.c

Would it be possible to check the session name (or look for Unity's dbus
session name?) as a condition to apply this? I don't think blacklisting
is maintainable here.

[Bug 1303531] [NEW] Fix for misplaced tooltips (upper-left corner) - upstream pending patch

2014-04-06 Thread Michael Webster
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Any chance this:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698730#c4

Current Gtk+3.0 has had a bug since Saucy where gtk tooltips will
briefly appear in the upper left corner before repositioning to their
proper location.

I will do the legwork if necessary (as a quilt patch)

[Bug 1241811] Re: USB disk not automatically mounted after upgrade to 13.10

2013-10-24 Thread Alexander Webster
@Romano,

To be honest I am not sure what I have.
I have been upgrading this laptop over the years starting from ubuntu 8.

So far I have not been able to automount my disk however. I noticed in
dmesg it says the following:

corrupt. Please run fsck.

So I ran fsck and also I mounted and cleanly unmounted the disk on a windows
machine but still no luck.

Hi,

I would like to report the same problem.
I tried the same commands as Romano:

udisksctl mount --block-device /dev/sdc1
udisks --mount /dev/sdc1

and was able to mount my drive manually.

If I insert my android phone this does mount automatically.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Thanks for the info... I've got win7 on another partition, I'll try to
reproduce - thus far I've been unable to really get to the bottom of
this because I cannot reproduce it.

[Bug 1184228] [NEW] Evince CTRL+N command, new window, no display

2013-05-25 Thread TREVOR WEBSTER
Public bug reported:

To reproduce in 12.04. Open a PDF to run Evince. Go to an arbitrary page
with some content displayed. Select a zoom level so that something is
displayed.

Hit CTRL+N. A new window shows but has blank display. The workaround for
now is to adjust zoom. Then PDF page is displayed. Should not need to do
this, because last window displayed the content.

I've attached a new version of the menu applet's applet.js file - please
don't try on less than Cinnamon 1.8.

Hopefully we can get this ironed out before final Mint 15/Cinnamon 1.8.x

Now that the Ubuntu family have hybrid ISOs, I personally use dd
except when I'm actually testing. Can't argue with your basic premise,
though.

[Bug 923949] [NEW] Virtualbox 4.1.8.r75467 - installing precise-desktop-amd64.iso

2012-01-30 Thread Elaine Webster
Public bug reported:

I downloaded precise-desktop-amd64.iso from Ubuntu on Monday 30th Jan
2012 to install into Virtualbox (version 4.1.8.r75467). I was in the
process of using it as a Live CD to install 12.04LTS so that I can test
it out.

The problem began before I was trying to choose whether to use the Try
Ubuntu option or the Install Ubuntu option. I could not choose
either because the mouse cursor disappeared!

So I tried to do the same method but using Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS AMD64 iso
(a very recent download within Jan 2012) and the mouse cursor can be
seen.

It is very bizarre! How do I get around this? Do I need to do an
extra trick? Or is it simply the precise-desktop-amd64.iso image that
is causing the problem? I've tried to google online to see if there
was a workaround and there doesn't seem to be.

So thought I had better raise it as a bug because it looks like a bug.

[Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-12-29 Thread Pete Webster
Having the same issue in Oneric, random occurences, sometimes reboot works,
sometimes requires multiple reboots. Although still not sure if this is related
to the bug mentioned here, or the one over here...
http://askubuntu.com/questions/21305/desktop-forgets-theme

Am running an old Athlon with regular HDD, although nVidia chipset
present on mobo. Haven't tried yet the timings with the daemons but will
look at that next.

Just thought I'd add that this IS still occuring on a Oneric environment

[Bug 872122] [NEW] Lubuntu ISO Testing - unable to connect to wireless networks

2011-10-10 Thread John Webster
Public bug reported:

During the LiveCD session, the network manager recognised both my
wireless networks, buit was unable to connect to either of them. Note
that Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE and Mint (main and debian
editions) handle that without any difficulty, so the problem is somehow
specific to Lubuntu.

[Bug 871520] Re: Can't pause, quit, or close banshee while, or after, playing example

2011-10-09 Thread John Webster
I have tried to reproduce this bug using the same ISO image, both during
the LiveCD session and with the system installed. I can't get it to
appear. I have been using a Compaq C700 laptop - Celeron with integrated
graphics - for ISO testing but in the light of my trouble-free test
runs, have since put a second installation on my Acer em350 netbook.
Unity actually makes a good deal of sense in the latter environment, and
Banshee is working fine there as well.

[Bug 856098] Re: Message appears at an early stage of the installation saying that user does not have permission to open a temporary file

2011-09-23 Thread John Webster
It couold not exactly be described as a dialogue. An (apparently empty)
nautilus window opened, and the error message appeared superimposed on
that window. The interruption appeared immediately before the stage at
which you are invited to open a wireless data connection. Dismissing the
error message and closing the window allowed installation to proceed
normally.

There is a complicating factor, in that the interruption appeared on
three separate machines (desktop, laptop and netbook) while I was
testing 20110921.2 with a USB stick made with Unetbootin, but can't be
reproduced with the (otherwise apparently identical) beta2 release
version, which I have been testing with sticks made with USB disk
creator.

Sorry to have wasted your time.

[Bug 779213] [NEW] Dual boot fails with Mageia/Mandriva

2011-05-07 Thread John Webster
Public bug reported:

While Kubuntu 11.04 is now my main distribution, I have also been
testing the beta versions of Mageia. In attempting to run Mageia as a
subsidiary distribution in a multi-boot situation controlled by
Ubuntu/Kubuntu, I have run into a problem that I had previously
experienced while attempting to use Mandriva in a similar way - the boot
process terminates in a kernel panic, apparently because Grub2 doesn't
properly identify the default boot location in Mageia/Mandriva.

The problem doesn't seem to arise (for me, anyway) with other
distributions still using Grub1, such as openSUSE and Fedora, and has
apparently already been raised upstream. See:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=606904

This bug was marked as resolved in version 1.98 of Grub2 back in August
2010. Nevertheless, the issue still exists in version 1.99~rc1-13ubuntu,
as used in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 11.04. Since this appears to be a version
specific to Ubuntu. I have reported the bug here rather than re-opening
the upstream bug at this stage.

I have just discovered that another bug report, complete with what
appears to be a very simple patch to fix the problem, was lodged
upstream in January 2010:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=566102

Clearly that patch has not yet been implemented.

Perhaps Canonical plans to offer a configuration option as a commercial
service?
