This is fixed in Fedora 40 Workstation.
https://distrosea.com/start/fedora-40-Workstation/

Ubuntu isn't applying the correct region & language format or a format
at all. See screenshot. The Fedora section is already selected in the
VM.

[Bug 2048962] Re: Icon cache and other appstream data are on the ISO because of live-build.

2024-05-30 Thread wontfix
** Description changed:

  Steps to reproduce
  Create VM with networking off.
Boot Ubuntu ISO in Live testing mode.

- du -h /var/lib/swcatalog
- ls -a /var/lib/apt/lists
- du -h /var/lib/apt/lists
+ ls -a /var/lib/apt/lists/
+ du -h /var/lib/apt/lists/
+ du -h /var/lib/swcatalog/
+ du -h /var/cache/swcatalog/cache/

The amount is larger than I expected when you look at what wouldn't be
installed from a non-live ISO due to live-build not cleaning up after
appstream. This also glitches the snap store which falls back to
appstream icons if they exist. On first run you can sometimes see them
shifting around and glitching the UI as you work through the app on poor
  WiFi or cellular connections.

Debian has the same behavior for live ISOs but does not for the normal
  large ISOs.

- When adding a pair for the Wireguard connection, if the window looses

+ When adding a peer for the Wireguard connection, if the popout or window

[Bug 2018772] Re: 400+ duplicate files exist in the generated Yaru theme icons.

2024-04-19 Thread wontfix
Details are easily shown with rmlint-gui to visualize it both in icons
or src and choose the source of truth images if you don't like their in-
directory selections. Add a relative symlink -r flag to the output
script if you're going to accomplish it that way. The exact files are
also listed in the script to add to your lists.

If you need to exclude or delete all non symlinks after running for easy
list output, find . ! \( -type l -o -type d \) -delete

[Bug 1956390] Re: User profile picture color not selected until you unlock and click on the letter.

2022-01-07 Thread wontfix
Steps to reproduce

1. Install Ubuntu
2. Notice blank colorless human outline on first login profile and privilege
elevation GUI textboxes.
3. Go to settings.
4. Click Users.
5. Click icon next to username but don't click on any profile picture or even
the letter with color itself.
6. Go back to login through lock or other method. Also look at the icon in
privilege elevation popup. It is now colored with the first letter of your
username.

[Bug 1956126] Re: xorg metapackage depends on x11-apps and xorg-docs-core

2022-01-06 Thread wontfix
>More likely that the two dependencies this bug is about would be cut as
you request, or that nothing will change at all.

I'm not requesting they be cut. I'm not sure why you keep saying that
when it just isn't true. I'm requesting they change to recommends. If
Ubuntu sees fit to not include recommends for certain packages on the
minimal install to hit certain targets or for users pulling in
metapackages with --no-install-recommends, that obviously isn't up to
me. Giving the user choice does not mean they aren't by default,
installed.

>But I also imagine nobody will ever bother with those because it's not
actually important.

Go look at size reduction over the years from bug reports due to
individual files, kernel drivers, and pulled in packages that weren't
actual depends. It wasn't so long ago this was done on purpose for
Ubuntu server and snap purposes in a very open way. Every single time
you can keep disk and RAM requirements the same LTS over LTS, that is a
win for everyone due to the vast array of devices and service packages
that Ubuntu runs on across countless industries. Every single package
not downloaded, that wasn't needed, is energy and paid bandwidth saved.

[Bug 1956128] Re: xserver-xorg-video-all requires xserver-xorg-video-ati

2022-01-06 Thread wontfix
> If it were up to me then the rule would be whether OpenGL is supported
in the associated Mesa and kernel drivers

Until recently, QEMU/QXL would have been without display drivers by your
standard, including LTS releases that will be supported for quite some
time still. Given the default targets including new Pis as they come
out, that standard would remove entire targets from Ubuntu's purview
that are works in progress. Given that Vulkan is becoming a common
backend and LLVMPipe exists, how does OpenGL of an unlisted version even
make sense? This standard also has changed since you originally said a
year based range and subsequently modified it when I posted the actual
dates relating to new products and sale ranges.

> xserver-xorg-video-all is a metapackage

Metapackages have both depends and recommends all the time. That is the
norm. Both the Intel and QXL X11 packages are recommends of xserver-
xorg-video-all, not required dependencies. In fact, even xorg has a
recommended package for scalable x fonts.

I am just asking that an old ATI package for a dead company, gets the
same treatment as Intel regarding recommended status even though Intel
is still alive. Intel still gets pulled in by default. Nothing has
changed there. This isn't explicit removal, at all.

[Bug 1956126] Re: xorg metapackage depends on x11-apps and xorg-docs-core

2022-01-05 Thread wontfix
I worry that removing a common metapackage name like that from an LTS
release initially, will crush tons of automation built over the years,
especially for ssh X forwarding use cases on servers without a window
manager. What is the alternative? Attach some of the actually required
dependencies and display drivers to the xwayland package?

I'm really only trying to change a required to be installed package to a
recommended package. This will be installed anyways, it will just
optionally be removable. The default behavior in Ubuntu is to install
recommended packages.

[Bug 1956128] Re: xserver-xorg-video-all requires xserver-xorg-video-ati

2022-01-05 Thread wontfix
The Mach chips in terms of server boards were sold well into the late
00's as a competitor to the Matrox(MGA) G200 chips in that space of
which were sold until only a few years ago in fairly standard servers.
The Matrox G550 came out in 2005 and their PCIe portfolio is still
upgraded and sold to this day for digital signage, of which many devices
are running Ubuntu. The Rage Fury Maxx series and Voodoo 5 are
explicitly post 2000 and competed against each other and the Geforce
series. Nouveau which is included to this day supports the original NV4
TNT. The TNT series came out in 1998.

Silicon Motion chips are still produced and sold to this very day in an
M.2 package for 2D output in server and embedded scenarios. The VIA
VX900 came out in 2010 (OpenChrome). The NeoMagic NM2380 is post 2000
and was famously used in the Sony VAIO PCG-XG18/19 series. The Savage
2000 wasn't even retail available until mere days before 2000, selling
obviously and mostly within that decade block.

There is no rule being followed here in terms of sales or production
that has anything to do with actual dates, to be clear.

There is no reason any package above or ATI should be required instead
of recommended in terms of packages given that the default is to install
recommended packages and even the minimal install will do so.

The dir in the home directory is named after the user. If your username
is user1, your home directory will be user1. If you change your username
in gnome-control-panel to user2, your home directory will still contain
user1 and not user2.

If you can't change it that way, then why bother having the option? It
isn't intuitive and provides extremely confusing UX. That is why I

[Bug 595934] Re: gvfs-backends should be split in multiple sub-packages

2022-01-04 Thread wontfix
This bug sadly still exists in 2022. libgphoto2-6 now allows for network
communication for cameras and related devices. libmobiledevice6 ensures
that you are forced to have iphone support. libgdata is generally Google
specific. CD rom support is still there, in 2022. Non-secure FTP and
WebDAV? Still default required, installed, and irremovable in 2022.

All of the library packages are required dependencies. It looks like it
could be broken out even further according to the installed files list
but at least making them recommended would be a wonderful first step.

[Bug 1803601] Re: motd-news.service scheduled even when /etc/update-motd.d/50-motd-news is not executable

2022-01-04 Thread wontfix
"Another one is specific to this service, and that is to set ENABLED=0
in /etc/default/motd-news."

This file no longer exists by default in Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy. The
language in the fix in many places including
https://ubuntu.com/legal/motd is to change a number in a file that isn't
there.

As you know, systemd services that are disabled can still be enabled.

[Bug 1940570] Re: rewrite 50-motd-news to use wget instead of curl

2022-01-04 Thread wontfix
This is already the case.
https://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/b/base-files/base-files_10.1ubuntu2.10/changelog

FWIW, fwupd and libsane1 require libcurl3-gnutls. libgphoto2-6 requires
libcurl4. base-files does not require anything curl related in 22.04
Jammy and probably anything post 20.04. The curl binary through the curl
package is not installed by default.

[Bug 1956115] Re: ubuntu-advantage-tools ' MOTD is incompatible with Ubuntu Legal's MOTD opt-out directions.

2022-01-04 Thread wontfix
/etc/default/motd-news as outlined in the link
"/etc/default/motd-news has an ENABLED=1 setting that if set to 0 will turn off
this functionality."

The file no longer exists by default. This would be required to change the
ENABLED variable from 1 to 0.
/etc/update-motd.d/50-motd-news notes the same thing in the code comments.
The directions or pulled location are wrong. The reason this matters is because
the package only exists to be wrong because ubuntu-advantage-tools requires
MOTD which itself it does not control, both of which are not removable as they
are dependencies of ubuntu-desktop-minimal. Subsequently there are forced hooks
for MOTD and Apt for something most desktop users aren't using with the
inability to opt out in the way it is listed. The file you are referencing is
not the file at the Ubuntu legal website or the /etc/update-motd.d/50-motd-news
code comments.

Since introduction, these files went from roughly 60-260KB in total to
3+MB.

Right. It should be the default. I had to set it for the main clock and

The reason I posted this here is because fonts-dejavu-core is a required

with an ubuntu specific change as noted above. Debian did not create
ubuntu-desktop and as such I cannot report this upstream within that
context.

[Bug 1956122] [NEW] Horizontal application menu scrolling and placement ruined usability options and intuitive usage

2021-12-31 Thread wontfix

Previously, vertical scrolling was in place. The benefit was familiarity
for people coming from other platforms. The horizontal swipe also is
less natural in comparison to up and down for a seek. Using the mouse

lost is the ability to use arrow keys.

We read right to left, up to down. This is no longer possible due to

[Bug 1956121] [NEW] Default workspace selector is using too much screen real estate

2021-12-31 Thread wontfix
Public bug reported:

By being implemented horizontally, the workspace selector is highly
inefficient in pixel usage. The default of two is using an incredible
amount of real estate given the amount of default applications. If it
were vertical and on the right hand side, it would use far less total
pixels for the same size viewport.

This creates an additional "problem" in that it also changes the
orientation of the application scrolling from vertical to horizontal in
