[Bug 1713017] Re: Enable MIDI support

2021-01-12 Thread wvengen
As far as I can see, it is still disabled by default [in kernel
bluez](https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/bluetooth/bluez.git/tree/configure.ac#n243)
nor [in
launchpad](https://git.launchpad.net/bluez/tree/configure.ac#n239),
neither do I find in being enabled explicitely in a package (but could
not so easily find the package code online).

[Bug 1713017] Re: Enable MIDI support

2021-01-10 Thread wvengen
@henning that sounds great! In which version did you see this? I expect
the build would also need the libasound2-dev dependency, which should be
in the control file.

I remember that indeed an alsa sequencer device was created on
connection; I only tested (when submitting this bug) midi controllers
that provided midi notes, which could drive a drum synth (not the other
direction), but I'd expect both directions to work.

Wow, this is pretty serious! I recently discovered that I'd been running
without a firewall for some time (exposing unsecured services, also on
public WiFi). Previously it worked, some upgrade must have introduced
this issue.

[Bug 1713017] [NEW] Enable MIDI support

2017-08-25 Thread wvengen
Public bug reported:

Now that bluez has landed with 5.46-0ubuntu2, it would be nice to enable
Bluetooth MIDI support. This did not seem to be enabled by default in
the build from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/5.46-0ubuntu2
(it found BLE MIDI devices, gatttool could talk to them, but no MIDI
device was made; also ldd showed no linkage to libasound.so.2).

After recompiling it with libasound2-dev installed and --enable-midi in
debian/rules, it worked.

Suggestion: add libasound2-dev to bluez dependencies, add --enable-midi
to rules.

[Bug 1480596] Re: Skype cannot find webcam on amd64

2015-08-01 Thread wvengen
It turned out to be an apparmor profile that restricted reading /dev.
Skype needs to be able to enumerate /dev to find a webcam.

Even though Skype is linked with gstreamer, it doesn't require
gstreamer1.0-plugins-good for accessing the webcam.
Sorry for the buzz. Hope this might help someone else.

[Bug 1480596] [NEW] Skype cannot find webcam on amd64

2015-08-01 Thread wvengen
Public bug reported:

Skype does not detect a webcam, even though Cheese is working correctly.

After looking into this, I found that i386 gstreamer doesn't have a
v4l2src element installed. Would this be a dependency issue, a gstreamer
or a packaging bug?

[Bug 883319] Re: xrandr --scale restricts area in which mouse moves

2014-10-22 Thread wvengen
I applied the patch from Chris Wilson to xserver-xorg-core
2:1.16.0-1ubuntu1 and find that my mousepointer now travels to the
monitor's edge when using scale with xrandr.

It appears that the package's .diff.gz has some changes (why isn't that
a quilt patch?) in the affected file, a patch that applies to the source
package (on top of all the other patches) is attached.

Replacing the macro's __DATE__ and __TIME__ with empty strings gets
around this error, but then other compilation problems come up. It looks
like the module is not prepared for recent kernel versions :(

On my MacBookPro11,1 I installed 14.10 beta-2 and have the same problem.
Booting from usb works, booting from harddisk not (after installation),
booting from harddisk while passing nr_cpus=1 on kernel cmdline works
(but only works with 1 core, obviously).

(4:4.8.4+dfsg-0ubuntu9) using libqtcore4 (4:4.8.4+dfsg-0ubuntu9):
  $ LC_NUMERIC=C qtconfig-qt4  # shows English UI
  $ LC_NUMERIC=pl qtconfig-qt4 # shows Polish UI

Some applications work correctly; Lyx, for example, does language
selection based on $LANGUAGE.

[Bug 544469] Re: iSight webcam on Macbook Pro does not work

This is still very much an issue for me, but not always; after a cold

uptime not anymore. MacBookPro5,5 with iSight usb id 05ac:8507 running
Ubuntu 12.04.1 (Precise) and Linux 3.2.0-33-lowlatency. When trying
Linux 3.7-rc8 my keyboard and mouse wouldn't work anymore, so I could

[Bug 1006453] Re: Screen brightness is not affected by keys ("MacBook Pro")

2012-06-11 Thread wvengen
Hi, thanks for your bug report. Depending on your specific MacBook model, there
could be a directory in /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/ , for example called
apple_backlight. If so, you can try to write to the file 'brightness' in there
and see if your backlight changes, like this:
  $ echo 8 | sudo tee /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/apple_backlight/brightness
if your backlight changes, the mechanism to change it works but the keys don't.
If not, then it's more a driver/hardware issue.

[Bug 1009067] [NEW] "Wacom Graphics Tablet" slightly dominates the applet overview screen

2012-06-05 Thread wvengen
Public bug reported:

The "All Settings" page of System Settings generally has short, to-the-point
names like "Appearance", "Privacy", "Sound", etc. There are some that are
longer, like "Mouse and Touchpad", "Universal Access" and "Language Support".
One of the items seems to grab the attention, namely "Wacom Graphics Tablet".
It is the only item which takes up three lines for the text label (on the
desktops I've encountered). Visually, it is the last item of the set, which
helps in attracting attention.
Since the name "Wacom" does not seem to add much clue to distinguish what to
choose ("Graphics Tablet", or even "Tablet" may suffice), it would be better to
drop that. This would clean up the user-interface here.

[Bug 988795] [NEW] update-manager requests curses feedback in folded terminal window

2012-04-26 Thread wvengen
Public bug reported:

When doing a graphical upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04beta3 using
`sudo update-manager -d`, the processed seemed to hang quite early in
the package installation. It appeared that glibc required user
interaction (asking what services to restart after the upgrade), but
that the debconf Dialog backend was used. With the terminal window
folded by default, it took quite a while to realise that there was no
progress.

Relevant messages:
debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Gnome
debconf: (Unable to load Gtk -- is libgtk2-perl installed?)
debconf: falling back to frontend: Dialog
libgtk2-perl 2:1.223-1build2 is installed though.

It's a little hard to reproduce this bug (I've already upgraded), or
else I'd have tried to run update-manager as normal user to check if
that would matter.

[Bug 973234] [NEW] /etc/fetchcrl.d not documented

2012-04-04 Thread wvengen
Public bug reported:

Besides from /etc/fetch-crl.conf there appears to be a /etc/fetch-crl.d
directory, which is empty by default. The manpage does not mention how
this directory is used, though an strace reveals that fetch-crl.d indead

[Bug 703897] Re: globus openssl trouble: please upgrade to gt5.0.2

2011-10-04 Thread wvengen
Thanks for looking into this. At the time I investigated the problem and
found that something with an openssl callback didn't work as it should,
causing the unknown CA error message. The relevant CA was installed, you
can see the locally compiled gt5.0.2 invocation succeeding.

What you mention about version numbers is interesting. And the problem is
indeed still occuring on 11.04:
  $ globus-url-copy gsiftp://host/file file:///tmp/q
error: globus_ftp_client: the server responded with an error
535 Authentication failed: GSSException: Failure unspecified at GSS-API level
[Caused by: Unknown CA]
while an strace shows that the correct files from
/etc/grid-security/certificates are found and read. Binaries built from
upstream's gt5.0.2 do work still.

Further investigation shows that Ubuntu's libglobus_gssapi_gsi.so.4 is
the culprit; when using upstream's libglobus_gssapi_gsi_gcc64dbg.so.0
(LD_LIBRARY_PATH with symlinks) the same binary works:

  $ globus-url-copy gsiftp://host/file file:///tmp/q && wc -l /tmp/q

not show any difference, however. I'll see if I can find anything more, but if
you have any ideas they would be welcome.

[Bug 559583] Re: qsampler crashed with SIGSEGV in QMetaObject::metacall()

2011-09-08 Thread wvengen
May be related to https://bugs.linuxsampler.org/cgi-bin/show_bug.cgi?id=143 .
Building latest svn worked for me.
I'd suggest to ship svn, or find the patch which fixes this, since for me
qsampler is unusable in its currently shipped form.

[Bug 703897] [NEW] globus openssl trouble: please upgrade to gt5.0.2

2011-01-17 Thread wvengen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libglobus-gssapi-gsi4

The current Globus version is 5.0.1, using the system openssl 0.9.8o.
But since openssl 0.9.8m old-style proxy certificates don't work
anymore. This has been solved in Globus 5.0.2, see
http://bugzilla.globus.org/globus/show_bug.cgi?id=6984 .

It would be great to see a Globus upgrade to version 5.0.2, or else have
this patch backported, since the current packages are unusable for me.

[Bug 663982] Re: For many Globus packages only debug symbols available but no binaries

Thanks for your explanation. I understand that there is no binary globus
ftp client package, and that the lib(*)-dev packages have have \1-dbg as
their debug equivalents. I find that counter-intuitive, but there may be
good reasons (like the source package being named such). Ok!

[Bug 579895] Re: Resizing Multiple Times loses toolbar in KDE

2010-06-11 Thread wvengen
** Description changed:

+ KDE toolbar can disappear when dynamically disabling a previously
+ activated display. This was found while using disper to change displays,
+ but as it has also been seen with nvidia-settings, it's likely to be
+ related to KDE.
+
+ Original bug description follows:
+ --
My disper version is disper 0.2.2.

My configuration is such that at the office I have two external displays
on this laptop. 1600x1200 and 1920x1080 . I use the following command
to enable those displays when I dock my laptop:

  disper -e -t left -d DFP-1,CRT-0

At home I use my laptop screen and a single display which is 1600x1200
and I use the following command to switch to that.

  disper -e

When I undock from there, I may want to use my laptop screen only, which
  I use the command

  disper -s

  to activate.

When I do this, my kde toolbar disappears below the bottom on the
displayable screen, although my mouse will only travel inside the
displayed screen, so it isn't a "Virtual Desktop" setting or anything
  like that.

If I redock either at work or at home and run

  disper -e

then the screen fixes itself and I can see my toolbar again.

My output of disper -p when I am running on only the laptop screen and
can't find the toolbar is as follows:

  $disper -p

  backend: nvidia
  associated displays: DFP-0
  metamode: DFP-0: 1680x1050 @1680x1050 +0+0
  scaling: stretched

+ I have had this problem ever since going to disper, and have had
+ multiple versions of KDE on this laptop, so I'm fairly certain this
+ isn't a kde issue.

[Bug 575128] [NEW] Wireless connection remains not ready after upgrade to lucid for BCM4322 while connecting manually works

2010-05-04 Thread wvengen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

After upgrading to lucid network-manager keeps seeing my BCM4322 wifi
card as "not ready" (nm-applet says: "Wireless networks - device not
ready", nm-tool mentions "State: unavailable"). It works quite well
before the upgrade. I am able to `iwlist eth1 scan` and `iwconfig eth1
essid "" && dhclient -1 eth1` to get a network connection.

similar bugs: bug #367024, bug #137227 and bug #147922. This bug is the

There are two sides to this issue:
* dictd should talk ipv6 -- bug #381324
* gnome dictionary application should try ipv4 when ipv6 fails

Let's restrict this bug to the latter.

I haven't found the time and don't think I will; hopefully someone else

[Bug 363290] [NEW] smartdimmer -i stopped working after upgrade to jaunty, though -d still works

I see that upstream has updated the Makefile. It is my turn to update
the package again and rely on that since it now works correctly if I am
correct. I'm a bit short on spare-time right now but I'll try to find
some. Then the package should be ready to get into Ubuntu. I'm not too
experienced in that, though, so if anyone can help me with that please
drop me a note.

[Bug 285411] Re: Different versions of ctypes

I confirm the difference in version numbers:

  $ strings /usr/lib/python*/lib-dynload/_ctypes.so | grep 1\.\0\.
  1.0.3
although I don't have a problem with ctypes
  $ python -c 'import ctypes'; echo ${?}

  $ python -v -c 'import ctypes' 2>&1 | grep ctypes
  import ctypes # directory /usr/lib/python2.5/ctypes
  # /usr/lib/python2.5/ctypes/__init__.pyc matches

import ctypes # precompiled from /usr/lib/python2.5/ctypes/__init__.pyc

/usr/lib/python2.5/lib-dynload/_ctypes.so
  # /usr/lib/python2.5/ctypes/_endian.pyc matches

Ah, now I understand the config thingy, thanks! I'll contact you off-bug
for some questions about the Makefile. Or is there a devel mailing list?

A tiny thing about DESTDIR that may be useful to know in general: please
use PREFIX for to set the prefix in the Makefile, and don't set DESTDIR
(but do use it) so that one can install the files in a temporary
directory without changing the prefix. This is explained shortly in
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/porters-handbook/porting-prefix.html

Ok, I uploaded a package to my PPA at http://launchpad.net/~wvengen/+archive .
After adding the repository, install the package r5u87x-firmware. A couple of
notes regarding packaging:
  * udev rules are automatically generated from parsing ucode/*.fw
  * there is a -firmware package containing only firmware and a
-firmware-loaders package with loader software
  * it works for me after (cold) booting, but suspend/resume still gives
problems
  * the loader is installed as /usr/sbin/r5u87x-loader with a wrapper that adds
the command --reload to reload the uvcvideo kernel module afterwards
