[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2013-06-13 Thread yarly
I agree with comments by Vorname Nachname (post #390). The low-latency
kernel provides for a much more responsive desktop. Differences between
linux-meta-lowlatency and linux-meta-generic are profound when running
in a LUKS environment with FDE.

[Bug 1187660] [NEW] Ubiquity manual partitioner missing functionality to configure encrypted lvm

2013-06-05 Thread yarly
Public bug reported:

Users require the ability to partition to different sizes other than
full disk capacity.

As of version 2.14.6, Ubiquity still lacks basic manual partitioning
functionality. Using Ubiquity it is not possible to manually configure
logical volumes inside a physical volume for encryption. This
functionality last existed in the alternate cd release in Ubuntu 12.04,
since discontinued as of 12.10.

Micah Lee (micahflee) wrote on 2011-05-13:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/245399/comments/7

The manual configuration partitioner should at least be as featureful
as the alternate CD partitioner. When you create a new partition and
choose the type, the list should include physical volume for LVM and
physical volume for encryption as well as ext4, ext3, fat32, etc.

If you want to dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows, your partitioning scheme
can look like this:

/dev/sda1 - NTFS for Windows
/dev/sda2 - ext4 for /boot
/dev/sda3 - physical volume for encryption volume

Within the encrypted volume you can set up a physical volume for LVM
and within that create two volumes, one for swap and one ext4 for /. If
someone already has Windows installed, Ubuntu can use free space on the
drive to automatically create a /boot partition and put everything else
in an encrypted partition.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI graphics driver

2010-05-05 Thread yarly
I really hope this gets an official fix as this is an LTS release.
The longer Ubuntu leaves this unsolved users will be left to
find their own methods and means, which could result in
more problems should an official fix ever be released.

Many of the workarounds suggested by editing entries
in the following files just don't work.

/etc/default/grub
/etc/grub.d/00_header

Maybe it works for some, but I'm on a Nvidia card and
it's not working for me.

[Bug 559245] Re: KFTGabber(Version 0.8.99) doesn't start transfer in lucid beta

2010-04-30 Thread yarly
Kowmonaut I made a note of this in an earlier posting to launchpad. It
appears the maintainer here read my directions on how to compile from
SVN but did not read the part that the KDE 4 port is in an alpha build
feature incomplete stage and not usable.

2010-04-30 Thread yarly
Also, the project is essentially dead, the main developer kostko hasn't
updated SVN for two years. It's sad really because if KFTP didn't have
bugs it would easily be the best GUI FTP client available for linux.

Here's my earlier postings to launchpad about KFTP SVN...

[Bug 309149] Re: Multi-threading is not allowed

Martin, some feedback for you.

0 a.d.

Related bug ticket
http://trac.wildfiregames.com/ticket/432

Earlier today I attempted to build an open source RTS game under development
called 0 a.d.
Using libxml2 and libxml2-dev ( 2.7.5.dfsg-1ubuntu1 ) from main Karmic
repository to compile source of 0 a.d. would result with following error.

../../../source/tools/atlas/AtlasUI/Misc/DLLInterface.cpp:48:2: error: #error
libxml2 must have threading support enabled
make[1]: *** [obj/AtlasUI_Debug/DLLInterface.o] Error 1
make: *** [AtlasUI] Error 2

libxml2 and libxml2-dev ( 2.7.5.dfsg-1ubuntu1.1 ) from Karmic-proposed fixed
the issue.
I was able to compile 0 a.d. successfully with the updated libraries.

2010-01-09 Thread yarly
After installing that package, Mplayer associates itself with certain media
filetypes.
Double-clicking on one of the associated filetypes launches mplayer with a GUI
If you right click on the controller or a video window you can select the option
preferences. Inside the preferences menu, you can click on the misc tab
and you will see the option Stop XScreenSaver with a check toggle option.

This preferences GUI edits settings located at ~/.mplayer/gui.conf

Yes they are two different packages. As far as I understand though,
both XScreenSaver and Gnome-screensaver were both disabled the same way
using poke to reset the timer. So it shouldn't really matter what
mplayer lists as XScreensaver, because the end result should reset the
timer for whatever screensaver was active.

[Bug 501217] [NEW] Karmic does not umount media (DVD) properly

2009-12-28 Thread yarly
Public bug reported:

I've noticed that on a fresh install to Karmic 9.10 that any time I
ejecte a DVD disc manually from a DVD+RW drive that Ubuntu does not
umount the disc. This was not a problem in Jaunty 9.04, but it is

A temp workaround is to click on the media icon left behind on the desktop and

[Bug 406721] [NEW] Request: Backport Vidalia 1.15 to Jaunty

2009-07-29 Thread yarly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vidalia

Quite a number of changes have been made since Vidalia 1.9.
It would be nice if this application was maintained.

0.1.15 09-Jul-2009
o Bump the minimum required Qt version to 4.3.0.
o Remove USE_QSSLSOCKET as a build option. If your Qt doesn't support
OpenSSL, then you don't get GeoIP lookups.
o Fix the TorPostFlight portion of the OS X bundle installer so it
doesn't fail when installing Torbutton.
o Include libeay32.dll in the Windows installers.

0.1.14 29-Jun-2009
o Close the TorProcess more quickly after registering for log events, so
we avoid displaying duplicate log messages received over Tor's control
port and Tor's stdout log. (Ticket #484)
o Explicitly set CMAKE_OSX_SYSROOT to the 10.4 SDK rather than expecting
the packager to do so when building a Universal binary.
o Include Tor's geoip file in the Windows bundles.

0.1.13 25-May-2009
o Remove an old warning on the relay settings page that running a bridge
relay requires Tor 0.2.0.8-alpha or newer.
o Add a workaround for a bug that prevented Vidalia's tray icon from
getting added to the system notification area on Gnome when Vidalia was
run on system startup. Patch by Steve Tyree. (Ticket #247)
o Fix a bug that prevented the control panel from displaying when
running on the Enlightenment window manager. Patch by Steve Tyree.
o Rename the CMake variables used to store the location of Qt's lupdate
and lrelease executables. Recent versions of CMake decided to use the
same variable name, which was stomping on mine, resulting in the wrong
lupdate and lrelease executables being used.
o Use the TorProcess subclass of QProcess for launching Tor when hashing
a control password so we can take advantage of its PATH+=:/usr/sbin
trick on Debian there too.
o If a RouterDescriptor object is empty, don't try to display it in the
router descriptor details viewer. (Ticket #479)
o Wait until Vidalia has registered for log events via the control port
before ignoring Tor's output on stdout. Previously we would start
ignoring Tor's stdout after successfully authenticating, but before
registering for log events which, in some cases, could lead to
messages not appearing in the message log.
o Update many translations and remove others than are no longer
up-to-date enough to be useful.

0.1.12 16-Mar-2009
o Fix a bug in the hidden service settings configuration class that
could lead to compile errors in Visual Studio and on IRIX.
o Fix a build error that occurred on IRIX when using the MIPSPro
compiler. Patch from Matthew Saunier.
o Remove two duplicated strings in the Spanish translation of Qt's
internal strings (qt_es.po). The duplicated strings caused build
errors when building with Qt 4.5. (Ticket #469)
o Remove the code that altered PublishServerDescriptor when becoming a
bridge, since Tor handles that itself now, and ensure that BridgeRelay
is reset when going from bridge to just-a-client mode.
  o Remove an unnecessary #include from helpbrowser.cpp.
o Add an application icon based on Tor's logo to the vidalia.desktop
file.

0.1.11 16-Feb-2009
o Remove support for configuring Tor's User and Group options in the
Advanced settings page.
o Only set HttpsProxy if both the I use a proxy... checkbox and the
Use this proxy for HTTPS also checkboxes are checked. Otherwise,
unset it. (Ticket #440)
o Fix a use of an uninitialized variable that would occur when Tor was
already running when Vidalia started, and the Start Tor when Vidalia
Starts checkbox is checked. (Ticket #443)
o Switch to using 'getinfo address-mappings' instead of
'getinfo addr-mappings'. (Ticket #454)
o Backport a change that removes a verticalSpacing property from a .ui
file, so Vidalia 0.1.x will still build on Qt 4.2. (Ticket #442)
o Fix some memory leaks in the hidden service configuration dialog.
o Fix a CIRC event parsing bug that would occur when the CIRC event
contained a 0-hop circuit path and EXTENDED_EVENTS is enabled.
o Include patches from Steven J. Murdoch that enables the Tor Browser
Bundle to launch Firefox itself without relying on Portable Firefox.

0.1.10 02-Nov-2008
o Add a prettier dialog for prompting people for their control port password
that also includes a checkbox for whether the user wants Vidalia to remember
the entered password, a Help button, and a Reset button (Windows only).
o Fix a crash bug that occurred when the user clicks 'Clear' in the message
log toolbar followed by 'Save All'. (Ticket #434)
o Uncheck the Torbutton options by default in the Windows bundle installer
if Firefox is not installed. (Ticket #421)
o Add a Windows bundle installer page that warns the user that they should
install Firefox, if it looks like they haven't already done so. (Ticket
#421)

[Bug 397215] Re: Keyboard warning tone audible through onboard motherboard speaker instead of audio card/speakers

2009-07-10 Thread yarly
Update:

The warning tone can be disabled however this does not solve the issue
of why the alert sound playback is occuring through the motherboard
diagnostic speaker rather than a sound card/PC speakers.

Instructions to disable the warning tone (alert sound) in Ubuntu 8.10

System-Preferences-Sound-Click on Sounds Tab-Uncheck Play alert
sound

Now that correct terminology is being applied, can someone help identify how to
stop the alert sound from being played back through an onboard diagnostic
speaker on the motherboard and direct it to the sound card/PC speaker?

[Bug 397215] [NEW] Keyboard warning tone audible through onboard motherboard speaker instead of audio card/speakers

2009-07-08 Thread yarly
Public bug reported:

Tested and reproducible on

Ubuntu 8.10
Ubuntu 9.04 live cd

Open a terminal window, hold down any of the following keys on the motherboard
[backspace, delete, page up, page down, etc] If the motherboard has the
onboard speaker enabled in the bios, Ubuntu is pushing through the warning tone
through the motherboard speaker instead of through the audio card. You can
reproduce this behavior in other applications as well [password prompts, etc]

The quick suggestion would be to disable the onboard speaker in the
motherboard bios. Unfortunately, some motherboards do not allow this.
I haven't seen a way to disable or redirect the warning tone in Ubuntu
to the correct audio device.

Foxconn was able to reproduce this bug on Intel boards as well. I'm
trying at the moment to work with Foxconn for a bios update that
disables the onboard speaker after POST. Hopefully, this allows a
workaround for the time being on my motherboard, but it doesn't address
the issue in a default installation of Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04

[Bug 321716] Re: KFTPgrabber crashes when deleting multiple items from queue

2009-07-07 Thread yarly
I've been able to further refine this bug..

The problem appears to be when selecting an expandable queue entry (+
sign) in addition to other items in queue and then selecting delete.
This will cause the client to crash.

However, if you only select items in queue which do not have a hierarchy
seen yet, you can delete those multiple queue items at the same time.

[Bug 230749] Re: gnome-screensaver uses too much CPU

2009-03-10 Thread yarly
Kjell, I'm fairly new to linux, I don't know what is involved to make a
backport happen. I could propose it, but I don't have the skills to
implement those changes, whatever they may be.

With that said, as gnome-screensaver stands presently, it causes VLC to
skip frames during a gnome-screensaver CPU spike. The only solution it
appears to get around this is to kill off the gnome-screensaver process.
That may be a workable solution for HTPC media centers that really don't
need a screensaver at all, but for home desktop users killing gnome-
screensaver removes a security component (walking away from PC, password
protection) in addition to control over power savings by turning off the
monitor after a predisposed length of time.

I also wanted to convey that even if this doesn't get fixed for Ubuntu
8.10, I think it would be a bit much to have to wait until October 2010
to finally see this issue addressed in Ubuntu 9.10. It's easy for me
to request this without offering the necessary skills to fix it
personally, but realistically, other Ubuntu users are experiencing
similar issues. Most don't read launchpad or even ubuntuforums and
would blame the OS for something they can't explain (gnome-screensaver
CPU spike causing frame skipping in vlc). It took me a few weeks to
track this down.

[Bug 319024] [NEW] BUG: KFTPgrabber will not allow navigation on multiple/secondary connections to the same FTP during a file transfer

2009-01-19 Thread yarly
Public bug reported:

Bug encountered on:
-
Ubuntu 8.10 amd64
KFTPgrabber 0.8.1-2 (kftpgrabber_0.8.1-2_amd64.deb)

Steps to Reproduce

1. Open KFTPgrabber.
2. On left session, connect to FTP

... Example:
... ftp.mozilla.org
... Port: 21
... check anonymous login

3. On right local session, queue a large file to download so that the transfer
will not complete before the test.
4. Start transfer of queue from the ftp to your local machine.
5. Open a new session, left or right.
6. Connect to same FTP IP/ADDRESS [must be the same IP/ADDRESS !]

This bug makes KFTPgrabber useless for navigating multiple connections

already active from that FTP.

[Bug 308385] Re: vlc 0.9.4 slower than 0.8.6 - video freezes then resumes pixelated for a few seconds

2009-01-06 Thread yarly
rjmoerland,

Your issue is basically the same as what I've been experiencing.

Frankly, I'm surprised that more Ubuntu users are not reporting this
issue on launchpad. Maybe it's because they don't even know about
launchpad.

I believe this problem is not caused by vlc 0.9.4 , but possibly from OS
changes that occured between Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 8.10. Why do I
believe this? I've observed random stalling/skipping while audio
continues while troubleshooting this issue in both Ubuntu packages vlc
0.8.6h and 0.9.4

Usually what happens is a reboot or system change will make the random
skipping go away for a short period of time only to return shortly
after. Some changes like unchecking vlc's disable screensaver option
improved the visibility of random skipping the problem, but it still
resides if you look hard enough.

You can see in the forum threads below where I tried many different
things hoping to find a workaround. I've tested the following
configurations with no change.

VLC: 0.8.6h/0.9.4
Compiz: On/Off
Video Output Module: X11/XVideo
VLC Disable Screensaver: On/Off

Below are some threads of users reporting this issue (there may be more threads)

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1000393
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=972696

http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13t=53160
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13t=53415

One observation I've noted in my posts is that this random frame
skipping always coincides with a CPU spike in Xorg as well as gnome-
screensaver (when VLC disable screensaver option is enabled). This can
be seen by opening a terminal window, running the top command, then
starting a video in vlc. Wait for random skipping to occur in vlc, when
it happens, look at top output and there should be a 10% spike in xorg
right as it happens.

I believe the observed effects of this bug may be related to a Xorg bug
although I can not say if this is certain. All I know for sure is that
this random frame skipping coincides with a CPU spike in Xorg.

[Bug 294972] Re: xorg 10-20% cpu usage after intrepid upgrade, general system sluggishness

2008-12-25 Thread yarly
The issue of General System Sluggishness may be due to a bug with
autodetection of display refresh rate in Compiz or Ubuntu. This would
explain why both Nvidia and ATi users are effected.

Example: If refresh rate is being polled at 59.88Hz, Ubuntu or Compiz is
rounding down to 50Hz instead of setting refresh to 60Hz.

I was having major issues with video playback skipping in VLC before I
manually set the refresh rate. Also when I manually set the refresh
rate through CompizConfig Settings manager, Ubuntu desktop performance
improved significantly. I posted full steps to the

The Nvidia steps only need to be done by Nvidia users to fix
tearing/VSync issues for video playback. Follow the steps and see if it
solves the problem...

IMPORTANT!! To Fix Compiz Display issues!!
--
STEPS: Compiz Configuration

1. Download CompizConfig Settings Manager from Ubuntu repository.
2. Navigate to.. System -- Prefences -- CompizConfig Settings Manager
3. Navigate to.. General -- General Options
4. Click General Options to open window
5. Click Display Settings tab
6. Uncheck Detect Refresh Rate
7. Move Refresh Rate slider to 60, or set 60 in the box
8. Check Sync to VBlank
9. Click back button to move back to main CompizConfig window
10. Navigate to.. Utility -- Video Playback
11. Uncheck Video Playback then exit the CompizConfig Settings Manager.

STEPS: Nvidia Configuration

1. Pull up nvidia-settings
.. Navigate to.. Applications -- System Tools -- nvidia-settings
.. or open a terminal, type nvidia-settings , press enter
2. Click X Server XVideo Settings
3. Check Sync to VBlank _IF_ not checked
4. CLick OpenGL Settings
5. Uncheck Sync to VBlank _IF_ checked
6. click quit button
7. click quit button
8. Reopen nvidia-setting to verify that config changes were saved.
.. IF they were saved, you are done with step 8.
.. IF they were not saved, ~/.nvidia-settings-rc in your home directory
.. may be under root permissions. You will need to chown chgrp for the file.
.. Then you will need to start back at Step 1 and repeat all steps.

IMPORTANT: Reboot your machine when finished. The driver changes won't
function correctly until you reboot

I think this bug is related to the following threads which involve vlc
playback skipping

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=972696
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13t=53415

Every time playback skips/freezes in vlc, there is a corresponding cpu
spike of about 10% by Xorg which can be seen by running Top in terminal.

I've observed this behaviour under a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10

I'm desperately looking for a solution. If I can't find one it's back to

Unfortunately, as of now, if the nvnews.net forums are an accurate
