[Bug 370173] Re: laptop overheats and suddenly shuts down/off

2010-10-27 Thread ybaruss
I am also suspected a fan control problem because when CPU is being used
at full speed, fan just go for a little burst but could do it longer in
order to cool a bit more.

For me the directory /proc/acpi/fan is empty and
/proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points has no active trip points (those
starting with "AC") then there is no ACPI-based fan control on my system
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI). Then I am wondering, if not
ACPI, what is governing fan management ?

Can those that are concerned by this bug confirm or not if they have a
ACPI-based fan control on their system ?

[Bug 370173] Re: laptop overheats and suddenly shuts down/off

2010-10-26 Thread ybaruss
Thanks dmiller309 but your solution doesn't work for me. I don't think
this bug is about GPU over temperature problem, it seems more due to bad
temperature reading that lead to critical shutdown.

I was expecting to have details on what went wrong within system logs when
critical shutdown occurs but the only related error is:
[ 14.623699] k8temp :00:18.3: Temperature readouts might be wrong - check
erratum #141

There is no evidence of who causes the shutdown. I saw that there is AMD
K8 (my and other bug subscribers configuration) problem reported here:
http://lm-sensors.org/wiki/Devices

[Bug 326406] Re: TCP/UDP Checksum Incorrect

2010-10-23 Thread ybaruss
Hello,

I put bug status to Invalid because I don't understand what is the problem:
What I know is:
> TCP or UDP frames travelling via the Internet can include some bit corruption
> when reaching a its destination.
> To manage that issue, those frames include checksum that allow to know if
> each frame is corrupted or not but it needs a quite heavy computation.
> Some Ethernet device include that check on its hardware but others no. Also
> wireshark will redo it for you.

Correct me if I am wrong but when Alejandro reports that he cannot
configure "ethtool -k eth0" it may be because its device do not support
it. Note that the tx-checksumming is not really relevant because
checksum control is only useful for rx frames to know if they are
corrupted. Note also the wireshark will check it only on rx. Thus
statistics that you obtain shows that 90% of received frames are correct
... you Internet connection is "not too bad".

Also, as you can see there:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCP_Offload_Engine there are reasons why
Linux architecture do not support sub-contracting IP frame whole
management to hardware.

The issue is discussed at several forums (eg.

  Replication:

  You can try:
  # sudo apt-get install stress
  # stress --cpu 16 --vm 2 --vm-bytes 128M

But it may be the graphics card (gpu), connected to the same heat sink
as the cpu, that causes the shutdown. And the gpu will only overheat
when cpu is not getting very stressed/hot and thus the fan is not
running fast enough to keep the gpu from overheating.

It may also be reproducable by installing the ubunu alternate CD into
  virtualbox (without guest additions).

  -
  Workarounds:

Hint 1: Make sure the heatsink/vent system is not dusty. (Do clean it with
pressured air/vacuum at own risk.)
Hint 2: Using your laptop standing on its side or front edge (even if
opened), i.e. when it is connected to external monitor etc., can change the
heat flow and make parts like the gpu overheat which won't get so hot in normal
orientation.

In some cases using some additional kernel modules (or other cpu
throttling packages) seem to work around the problem.

Comment #308 points out how with ati graphics cards supported by the
fglrx driver you can disable its acpi functions as a workaround.

An example /etc/X11/xorg.conf to keep the gpu cooler in general is the
  following:

  Section "Screen"
     Identifier "Configured Screen Device"
     Device "Configured Video Device"
  EndSection

  Section "Device"
     Identifier "Configured Video Device"
     Option "ClockGating" "true"
     Option "DynamicPM" "true"
     Option "DynamicClocks" "on"
  EndSection

Comment #327 points to the "server" edition which does not use acpi and
does not suffer from this bug.

Comment #328 hinted that adding the "acpi.power_nocheck=1" AND
"acpi_osi=linux" boot options can help, if your (updated) BIOS supports
it. (Making nocheck=1 the default was proposed
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/23156/ but it is not upstream as of
  april 2010.)

  ---

If your fan does not start at all, but in emergency overheating
conditions, you may be seeing an (source code wise) unrelated issue/bug,
that can be worked around however by the same acpi.power_nocheck=1 boot
option as well, though. (Or by staying 10 seconds or so in the grub boot
menu until the fan starts controlled by the bios can help.)

Steffen,
Thanks for your quick answer.
Yes the webcam of your Acer 6530 is "built in" but it is actually connected to
the USB internaly.

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 064e:a103 Suyin Corp.
See there: http://www.suyin-europe.com/index.php?Itemid=151

There is a bunch of bug raised on 10.04 according to USB Webcam
management, this one can be related with: Bug #224821, Bug #575000, Bug
#647501, Bug #144745, Bug #134285 or old Bug #215604.

WebCam seems a touchy subject: it will need time to be solved a believe.

[Bug 648042] [NEW] File autolaunch association lost when alacarte move/delete items

2010-09-26 Thread ybaruss
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

When sorting out software items with alacarte, the "auto-launch
association" of a file is lost.

That is what to do to see the bug:
Install KmPlot package from softwarestore and you'll see it with an icon all
correct in Education submenu of Application on panel.
Make a plot and save a ".fkt" file somewhere.
In explorer the "auto-launch association" is not done and if you try to set it
you see it is not being proposed even if in alacarte you can see it.
With the explorer tool create a new "auto-launch association" entry with
command kmplot for the ".fkt" file you created: you will see that a new entry
is proposed in explorer menu but without correct icon and in alacarte there is
now a new entry also with no icon in Other sub section.
Now close explorer and in alacarte drag and drop the kmplot "auto-launch
association" entry from Other to Education. Because the drag and drop action
has copied the entry, delete the one in Other section.
Now open explorer and try to double-click on the ".fkt" file you previously
have associated to kmplot : it is lost.

I would expect that:
Explorer "auto-launch association" menu would display software available the
same as alacarte.
Also that alacarte would not break "auto-launch association" set with Explorer
when sorting them.

$ apt-cache policy alacarte

[Bug 647501] Re: Cheese disconnects wireles USB adaptor when launched

2010-09-25 Thread ybaruss
Hard to believe : when I run apport-collect -p cheese 647501 then cheese
works fine in debug mode, camera monitor reports correct webcam starting
and wireless connection is still fine !! And I can see my face ;o)

But just after that: re-launching cheese with normal icon leads to same
problem and wireless disconnection and need to restart Linux.

Strange indeed

[Bug 575000] Re: Conflict between webcam and wifi

2010-09-24 Thread ybaruss
Hello,
I am using 10.04 with Gnome and I wanted to see my face with the Chicony
Electronics webcam integrated in my laptop. I then installed Camera Monitor
from Ubuntu softstore and it first goes well ... I saw my face ... once :o(

Since then at boot up there is a error box that says : "Another instance
of Camera Monitor is already running!". And I also add some Wireless
disconnection when I don't remove Camera Monitor install.

Hope that helps.
Details available on demand.

[Bug 23768] Re: /usr/bin/cpufreq-selector should have different access permissions

2010-09-09 Thread ybaruss
Hello, just to say that not only geeks care about cpufreq-selector but
experience revealed that I need it to be more performant and accurate.
Actually my laptop is overheating when OnDemande mode is set (I suppose
because fan control is not adapted but I didn't manage to know yet).
Anyway, I also don't understand why "not another setuid root
application" is so awful that they should "avoid it" but I just say that
it may be interesting to put it as a feature to normal ubuntu users.

[Bug 370173] Re: laptop overheats and suddenly shuts down/off

2010-08-28 Thread ybaruss
Hello everybody,

This bug look to be strong regarding number of comment related !!

For the little storie, I actually have a Toshiba laptop with AMD
Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 on it and experienced different
problems with Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10 and now 10.04. I have to say that people
under Ubuntu are performing marvelous job because problems are solved
while time passing ... thanks to them all !

For this "Over temperature spurious shutdown" problem I have to say that
I have it since Ubuntu 8.04 and still exist on 10.04. I would advise to
toggle off temperature check into temporary kernel used on Ubuntu
install CD because it can be very annoying while no risk to burn CPU
during Ubuntu installation stage.

After taking time to read all those comments on this bug, I would also
vote for a fan management issue because I confirm to have nothing into
/proc/acpi/fan and that sensors-detect provides no fan sensor for my
hardware. So how can the OS manage fan optimization with no input ?!?

I am very interested to have feedbacks on investigation status on this
problem and could provide informations if needed.
