Re: [Bug 657449] Re: Maximised window title should be shown in the panel

2010-12-17 Thread zekopeko
Thanks! Since there is no public spec for Unity (AFAIK) I'm stabbing
in the dark here. I guess that you are going to left-align the window
title (is the name of the app going to be between the window controls
and the menu, similar to OSX?). Will the menu only show when you
mouse over the panel or will it fade in/out as a function of pointer
proximity? I'm also confused about the drag to unmaximize since once
you are over the panel you have the menu so what exactly would one
drag?

Any merit in my other suggestion for keyboard shortcuts overlay ala MS
Office 2007/2010? Should I open another bug/feature-suggestion for it?

[Bug 657449] Re: Maximised window title should be shown in the panel

2010-12-13 Thread zekopeko
I have a suggestion that might help improve how this is presented.

A little ASCII diagram of the panel when the window is maximized:

CoF | X _ + File Edit Vie | Window Title | Indicators

CoF | - circle of friends button with the separator

X _ + - window controls

File Edit Vie | - applications menu. Note the " Vie | " part. It's the
menu item named View but it was cut with the | which isn't a separator
here (at least not like the one right of CoF). It is a fade effect
(similar to the one that is/was above the Trash icon when you have lots
of icons in the launcher) that nicely cuts the rest of the menu after
which the Window Title follows.

Window Title - the windows title but in bold as is now.

| Indicators - separator like the one right of CoF (so a vertical line)
followed by the indicators

My suggestion would improve discoverability of the menus while
retaining plenty of the Window Title. This would help with people
wondering where the menus went.

This could tie into accessibility via keyboard shortcuts. I liked the keyboard
shortcuts on the launcher in Unity 10.10/2.x and I think that this should be
expanded on the entire launcher + panel interface. Similar how Office 2007+
displays them
(http://officeimg.vo.msecnd.net/en-us/files/029/222/ZA010167826.gif). When the
user presses the Windows (or Alt) key they get an overlay that has every item
mapped to a key. So pressing [0-9] keys interacts with the launcher. Pressing F
(or what ever is assigned to it by the app) selects the File menu item etc.
When the user presses Win/Alt key another thing should happen. The fade effect
should consume the Window Title and show the entire menu options with the
corresponding keyboard shortcuts.

Re: [Bug 607519] Re: Intermittent loss of all input

2010-08-01 Thread zekopeko
Well this problem was happening on lucid IIRC but I upgraded to
maverick and haven't really noticed it. But something is happening
with my swap. My disk starts churning and completely stalls my
netbook. I had to restart it at times. I don't use quicklists so much
so don't know if I'm getting hit by 604777. Last time it happened I
noticed that (using htop) I had something like 350Mb of 1 Gb RAM being
used but my swap was full.I had to reset the machine.
Other times swap and RAM are maybe half full but the computer still
stalls. It's all very strange.
I'm currently running with swappiness=0 to see if the problem occurs again.

[Bug 581452] [NEW] Categories search results

2010-05-16 Thread zekopeko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Considering how USC puts the emphasis on applications and less on
packages it would be nice to divide the search results into different
categories. The simplest way would be to have a header with the title
"Applications" and another with the title "System Packages" or something
similar. When search results are displayed Applications would always
come first in the list.

This could be expanded so that theme and fonts are also in their own
category and are above System Packages.

The closest to that is on Apple.com when you search. I'm providing a
screenshot.

Well all the ones in gvfs-mount.txt with the label (Greek/Roman
names). There is also floppy fd0 which I don't have but shows in the
sidebar. I'll have to check the DVD one because I'm not on that
computer at the moment.
Mind you all the partitions aren't mounted at boot (those listed in
gvfs-mount). As I stated above I edited a policykit config file to
allow anybody to mount them without a password. Another thing is that
they are all NTFS volumes.

The drives aren't in /etc/fstab.

Note: I did edit a policykit config file by hand to allow mounting
without a password. I don't think this affected anything since my disks
did show in the sidebar and mounted without a problem after that.

During the course of updating I noticed that on some boots the sidebar
had no disks but a restart would usually fix this. Now I consistently
don't get disks to show.

[Bug 541844] [NEW] When installing from software list the install button doesn't become insensitive in the App/Item view

2010-03-19 Thread zekopeko

Go to some department and click the Install button. Then click on the More Info

You will see that the button isn't insensitive. It should be insensitive.

This applies to both installing and removing. In fact on further investigation

Re: [Bug 537414] Re: Software item screen looks oddly narrow in wide window

2010-03-17 Thread zekopeko
I understand it is by design. But both mpt and I think it looks weird.
It looks bland and uninteresting because it is so empty.
For reference look at how iTunes 7 does it:
http://www.winsupersite.com/images/reviews/itunes7_05.jpg
I would say it looks rather nice considering the similarities between
the two apps.

I think that implementing the behavior that I described above would be
more appealing then the current hard coded position of the screenshot.

This is a wishlist bug IMO. But it would make USC look better for
those that will use Lucid for the next 3 years.

[Bug 537414] Re: Software item screen looks oddly narrow in wide window

2010-03-13 Thread zekopeko
I like gridx4 and x2.

If the App view has the horizontal space it should add extra screenshots
to the right of the text. If the pane starts to lose horizontal space
(the user resizes the window or expands the sidebar) it should start
losing the right most screenshots before the horizontal bar shows. It
would continue to do so until we end up with a view that is exactly the
same as now but left aligned and with a smaller margin between text and
side pane divider. If there is only one screenshot then it can copy the
1screenshot.png attached above.

What do you think? If you are favorable to this solution you (or I) can
open separate bug reports for steps that need to be done for this to
happen.

[Bug 538313] [NEW] Make large screenshots (when clicked) more pretty

2010-03-12 Thread zekopeko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Lucid
USC 1.1.17

Could you make the screenshots open with an animation similar to the one
on the Apple site?

http://www.apple.com/macosx/refinements/

Scroll down and click on an image. It will scale up to a fullsized one. It has
no borders just a small Close button in the upper left.
It would be nice if there were semi-transparent button on the left/right (as in
many AJAX galleries) that would scroll between available screenshots.

Can this be done?

[Bug 538311] [NEW] App view is inefficiently using space for description and screenshots

2010-03-12 Thread zekopeko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Lucid
USC 1.1.17

The current App view could use much improvement.

I'm thinking:

Align it to the left with the same margin as is now on top. Move the
screenshots to how they were but make them bigger. It would be nice to
have 2-3 screenshots and a link to the gallery for more. The gallery
would simply be another level in the breadcrumb view (Get
Software-->Internet-->Firefox-->Screenshots) with screenshots laid out
in a grid.

I'm thinking that the text/screenshots ratio should be 50/50 in the
default size but if you maximize USC it should stop the text from
expanding over X number of pixels (in width), the rest should be taken
by a larger thumbnail(s).

I think my suggestion is justified since the majority of monitors today
are widescreen so I don't understand why are you expanding the view
horizontally.

DanRabbits mockup is probably very close to how I think it should be:

[Bug 533329] [NEW] Highlighting apps in software list view should expand down not up

[Bug 402767] Re: multisearch add on blocks the functionality of firefox location bar

2009-07-24 Thread zekopeko
I would like to make a suggestion:

If you install extensions or other data gathering applications in the
testing cycle do the following:

Inform the user to the best of you abilities about your intentions. In the case
of Multisearch a link on the search page leading to an explanation would be
GREAT!
If it's some other kind of desktop software pop-up a big windows with an
explanation (or at least a short description and a link to the full
explanation).

The main point is: INFORM us! Tell us what kind of data you are
collecting (I suggest an anonymous policy by default, more invasive data
gathering should ONLY be opt-in not opt-out).

Understand that I'm a volunteer here. And so are the rest of girls and guys
that test the next Ubuntu version.
I'm positive that a lot of people would LOVE to help you get useful data that
could improve Ubuntu (or make Canonical some money for even more Ubuntu
goodness). But you HAVE to be transparent.

[Bug 339165] [NEW] Nautilus doesn't display folder names with a black background

2009-03-07 Thread zekopeko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04

nautilus:
  Installed: 1:2.25.92-0ubuntu1

I have a black background in nautilus. When I open nautilus the names
are shown but if i open a new tab the folder names disappear. They are
still there if i highlight the folders. This does not happen if i open a
new window.

I have attached a screenshot.

[Bug 257881] Re: fast user switch applet vs. nis

2008-12-22 Thread zekopeko
Same here it really is a deal breaker. Perhaps if there are more then X
names present it could simply offer a search box as a part of the applet
and a scrollbar?

Here is the screenshot:

2008-10-14 Thread zekopeko
i'm on a desktop pc and i'm also getting this. the beep happens also on
shutdown and since my monitor losses video signal before any errors are
displayed i have no idea what's happening.

the system in question is Abit IP35 w/ Q6600, 8600GTS

[Bug 282420] Re: Boot graphics corrupted on nvidia

2008-10-13 Thread zekopeko
GDM is uneffected. only usplash. i even got an apport error telling me
that usplash crashed but that it couldn't send the bug report since the
problem was in the BIOS.

i'm using Abit IP35 motherboard with one of the newer BIOS updated (will
have to look to be sure if it's the newest)

2008-10-12 Thread zekopeko
Public bug reported:

The lower half of the screen is black and the upper is white background with
red vertical bars. after going through half a boot (my perception) the bars
started to move. even bars up odd down. and tty1 (ctrl+alt+f1) didn't work. nor
did 2 or 3.
The second time i booted usplash didn't even start and just switched to text
mode.

i'm using 177 driver from jockey. ubuntu 8.10 dev.
