Not sure if this fix is complete. I'm still getting corrupted looking screen for a few seconds after login, sometimes it is just garbled graphics, other times it is a picture from the last session (what was on the screen before last shutdown). Sound distortion can be avoided when you switch over to a terminal (CTRL+ALT+F1) while listening.
