[Bug 1001780] Re: apt-get update size is too big

2012-05-20 Thread zpletan
A look at
us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/$DIST/[main|universe]/binary-i386
reveals that timestamps on the package info for hardy, lucid, maverick,
natty, oneiric, and precise are being updated. Based on this, I would
say that the problem is *not* specific to Precise. This concurs with my
experience; in addition to real and virtual machines I have with
Precise, this happened on my virtual machine of Oneiric before I blew it
away a few weeks ago.

This issue has recurred in all successive releases of TB on 11.10.
Currently, he is running the latest 11.0.1 and still has this problem.
Will update with info for TB on Precise when it hits final release.

[Bug 891163] [NEW] after resume, statusbar stays at "connected to server"

2011-11-16 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

My Dad has a POP email account in Thunderbird 7.0.1 under Ubuntu 11.10.
After resume from suspend (on same network; cf bug #795342), when he
clicks "Get mail," the Thunderbird statusbar only says "Connected to
my.server.com." Thunderbird is not hung--buttons are responsive and he
can still access his downloaded mail, but he has to Get Mail again
before it will retrieve messages and clear the statusbar to indicate
that retrieval is complete. Sometimes he only needs to press it once
after the first time, but occasionally he needs to press it multiple
times.

[Bug 850106] Re: Fails to append sent mail to mbox in post-processing

2011-10-15 Thread zpletan
In my case, the problem happened thus: My dad has POP email and uses
Evolution. After I upgraded him to Oneiric and installed the version of
Evolution present on it, the application asked me to convert the mailbox
format, so I did. Now, whenever he sends an email, this message pops up.
I tried deleting the old mbox account (which had become set to
$USERNAME@localhost), but this did not fix the problem.

[Bug 875288] [NEW] long time switching networks unless disconnected first

2011-10-15 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

(I am running latest Oneiric as of 15 October 2011.) I have two WiFi
networks. If I am connected to one and connect to the other without
disconnecting first, it takes ~30 seconds to connect. If I disconnect
from the one before connecting to the other, connection is almost
instantaneous. Connection without first disconnecting should also be
instantaneous.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 747579 ***

This bug is similar to bug #747579. I should have been clearer. Nothing
was hung (I could verify this by seeing stuff get downloaded to
/target/var/cache/apt/archives/partial). My problem is solely with
display of information, not an actual problem with installation. Editing
OP for clarity, but I don't know how to set as not-a-duplicate.

** Description changed:

During the part of installation where Ubiquity restores previously
installed packages (via apt-clone) there is not enough of a status
indicator. There should be some kind of notice of expected time-to-
completion like the one when it is installing updates, language packs,
or the restricted extras. While installing, I have no idea if it is
installing 300 packages (entirely possible), downloading over a slow
- connection (entirely possible), or stuck and doing nothing.

[Bug 874497] [NEW] prompt before allowing logout during installation

2011-10-14 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

If the user attempts to log out during installation, Ubiquity should at
least prompt before letting logout complete. I just accidentally logged
out of the Oneiric LiveCD while Ubiquity was having apt-clone restore
previous packages. Activity Monitor shows apt-clone as still running,
but I don't know how to see when final installation is done or if it
will even get done, and no normal user should be expected to. I think
Ubuntu can do better here.

[Bug 742475] Re: Firefox 4 does not use Ubuntu Notifications

2011-09-17 Thread zpletan
I also desire to see this integration. The default XUL notification does
not fit in with Ubuntu's general polish. Perhaps this doesn't fit in
with the Natty (now Oneiric) timeline, but it seems like @chrisccoulson
has noted that something does need to happen. Can we rework this bug to
fit what needs to happen, or is there another bug already describing it?
Thunderbird, I understand, has received some love in this regard, but
Firefox needs a little bit of help too.

I would agree that a non-interactive notification without a way to get
to the file downloaded is generally useless in some general-user
contexts (though not in others, such as @danillo's use, or mine for that
matter). Still, messaging menu integration—I assume this would be the
proper place to put the other half of what is needed—cannot be that
hard, can it? Someone made Thunderbird do it.

In addition, the issue here is not third-party plugins, but
functionality. OP didn't ask specifically for xul-ext-notify, but for
integration with Ubuntu's mechanisms for displaying notifications to the
user. This could very easily, I think (in my ignorance of how it all
works), be simply put into Ubuntu's xul-ext-ubufox plugin, or added as
another if desired. Again, I understand that similar work has been done
on Thunderbird.

I'm changing the status from Invalid to Confirmed, since this is a) past
Natty, as mentioned by @chrisccoulson; and b) more or less confirmed, as
I understand Launchpad bug tracking, by both @danillo and now I.
Apologies in advance if this is not the right thing to do.

[Bug 810680] Re: pasted web content downloads images unnecessarily

2011-07-14 Thread zpletan
** Description changed:

If I copy web content with images and paste it into LibreOffice Writer,
the images are downloaded so they can be displayed. This is
understandable. What is not understandable is that they seem to be re-
downloaded when rendering thumbnails for the print dialog or exporting
as a PDF. On the relatively slow connection I have, this takes a rather
large amount of time, which is rather annoying.

I tested a 9-page document with web content (one small image per page)
and a 9-page content with large JPGs (one image per page), and the web
content took a significantly longer time to render/export, even though
in pure size it was much smaller. This leads me to believe that the
content is re-downloaded for rendering. In addition, even the document
with the JPGs took a small amount of time to render for the print
dialog, leading me to believe that it might be re-loading these from the
disk (or it could merely be the time it took for the processor to do its
thing), but this does not take nearly so long.

It would seem that a solution would be to use the image already in
memory for these operations, rather than downloading it a second time.

[Bug 793591] [NEW] FEATURE REQUEST: snap to dock

2011-06-06 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Windows snap to the bottom, left, and right of the workspace. They snap
to the panel (not the drag-up-to-maximize bit, but the window-stops-here
bit). Oftentimes, I want to move a window as far left as I can /without
hiding the dock/. Can we allow snapping to the dock just like we allow
snapping to the left-hand side of the workspace? It just needs to be
snapping like windows are snapped to the side, i.e. you can move it past
the snap point, but it will rest there.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I'm running stock Unity (3.8.12-0ubuntu1) that
came with Natty.

[Bug 785753] [NEW] lone app tabs duplicated on restart

2011-05-20 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I have an app tab (Google News), and Firefox is set to "Open windows and
tabs from last time" on start.

If I close everything but the app tab and then quit Firefox and re-open
it, I will now have both the app tab and a normal tab with the same page
as the app tab.

[Bug 740903] Re: return_to_partitioning fails when the replace option fails

2011-04-28 Thread zpletan
Sorry if this is a really dumb question: this bug is linked in the Natty
release notes, and I just want to make sure that it's not going to mess
anything up on Natty install. The only thing I do that's not standard
is use the partitioner to set up separate /home partition. Is there a
real chance that something will go wrong on install, or does this not
mean much to the end-user like me?

[Bug 755137] [NEW] Extreme CPU activity/heat

2011-04-08 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1764, running latest Maverick (more system info
than I know what to do with was kindly attached by ubuntu-bug). This
computer is /always/ running the CPU fan, no matter what's going on
(rarely more than a few tabs in Firefox, if that). I have the laptop
set up on a book so that it can get air; if this measure is not taken,
the computer will eventually overheat (some kind of message about
getting over 110 C) and shut down. This is not good.

I'm willing to add any information anyone wants, and I'll be trying the
latest mainline kernel sometime soon; I'll report back with my results
when I have them.

[Bug 689486] Re: File manager's mouse icon is distracting...

2011-02-04 Thread zpletan
Unless I am mistaken, the icon in question is system-file-manager,
which, among other things, is the icon used by nautilus. The potential
for confusion also exists if Nautilus is pinned to Docky (or another
dock), or if a launcher for the file browser is placed on the desktop or
the panel - it is not specific to Unity, unless I missed something. As
such, I am marking it valid for humanity. If this is actually not
right, I will be happy to open a new bug properly. :)

[Bug 713356] Re: indicator icon gives user false sense of alarm

2011-02-04 Thread zpletan
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I have a laptop with a large battery. When GPM gets to the point where
it uses battery-020, the applet/indicator in the panel makes me think
I'm going to run out of batter imminently (e.g. next 15-30 minutes).
Indeed, on another laptop with a smaller batter, I usually get this when
I have only ~20-30 minutes left. But on this laptop, if I click on the
indicator, it tells me I have 1 hour, 30 minutes left, which is about 3
times longer than I want to go before getting notified that I'm about to
  run out of battery.

So there are several solutions I can think of, and I'm sure there are more:
- 1) GPM ships with an orange icon for battery-020, and a red icon for
battery-000. You could just say it is a problem with the icon theme. The
problem is that this is not good for a lot of more symbolic (at least in the
panel) icon themes (e.g. ubuntu-mono, elementary).
+ 1) GPM ships with an orange icon for battery-020, and a red icon for

The problem is that this is not good for a lot of more symbolic (at least in

  2) Somehow implement it so that the percent at which it turns red is
configurable. (Easily configurable, not hacking the icon theme configurable).
  3) Somehow implement it so that if you get to a certain amount of battery
time left (ideally also user-configurable, but it doesn't have to be here,
unlike in #2), /then/ the icon turns red. I like this solution out of all the
ones I see.
  4) Something else I didn't think of. :)

For solutions 2 and 3, the icon spec for gpm could merely be changed to
have gpm-battery-[01][02468]0 /and/ something like gpm-
battery-[01][02468]0-warning. The gpm-battery-* could be normal, and
the gpm-battery-*-warning could be the red ones that get displayed when
  you start to run out.

[Bug 713356] [NEW] indicator icon gives user false sense of alarm

2011-02-04 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

1) GPM ships with an orange icon for battery-020, and a red icon for
battery-000. You could just say it is a problem with the icon theme. The
problem is that this is not good for a lot of more symbolic (at least in the
panel) icon themes (e.g. ubuntu-mono, elementary).
2) Somehow implement it so that the percent at which it turns red is
configurable. (Easily configurable, not hacking the icon theme configurable).
3) Somehow implement it so that if you get to a certain amount of battery time
left (ideally also user-configurable, but it doesn't have to be here, unlike in
#2), /then/ the icon turns red. I like this solution out of all the ones I see.
4) Something else I didn't think of. :)

For solutions 2 and 3, the icon spec for gpm could merely be changed to
have gpm-battery-[01][02468]0 /and/ something like gpm-
battery-[01][02468]0-warning. The gpm-battery-* could be normal, and
the gpm-battery-*-warning could be the red ones that get displayed when
you start to run out.

[Bug 708776] Re: wireless takes long time to find networks

2011-01-27 Thread zpletan

** Description changed:

On a Dell Studio 1737 (laptop) with Ubuntu Maverick, linux 2.6.35-25.44,
it takes about 25 seconds from the wireless being turned on to being
able to find wireless networks. This is really annoying when coming out
of suspend, as I have to wait what seems an eternity before I can get
  online.

I can repeat this bug in two ways: either suspend/resume, which, as best
I understand, shuts off the wireless on suspend, then brings it back on
resume, or just use the wireless switch on the side of the computer to
turn off wireless, then turn it back on. (I think it also does this on
bootup, but because I have to spend some time in GDM and then waiting
for login to complete, I know of no way to check the time.) Either way,
the wireless takes only a second or two to come up, as evidenced by
NetworkManager's 'Enable wireless' checkbox become active, but I have to
wait 25-26 seconds before NetworkManager can see /any/ wireless networks
(there are two in range of the computer).

I also tested this with the latest daily mainline kernel
2.6.38-999_2.6.38-999.201101261132, and the problem also exists in this
  version of the kernel.

[Bug 559373] Re: gif is not played by image viewer

2010-04-18 Thread zpletan
If I read this correctly, it is an "issue" I have been having for a
while now too.

Attached is an animated GIF image. Open it in EOG - admire the pretty
smiley (that doesn't move). Then open in Firefox or Chrome/ium and
watch it play. The problem is that EOG won't play the animated GIF.

[Bug 546890] [NEW] text-x-python icon doesn't fit in

2010-03-25 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: humanity-icon-theme

In humanity-icon-theme 0.5.1.6 on Lucid, the text-x-python icon does not
seem to fit in very well. It seems almost like the GNOME icon style
rather than Humanity. I reduced the lightness (by 50, in Inkscape) in
all flavors of blue and yellow and have attached a screenshot of the
difference between old and new.

2010-03-24 Thread zpletan
Vish,
Thanks for looking at this. People like you, who take prompt care of bugs,
make Ubuntu and its community rock.

I have a few observations/comments/notes:
1) The PPA I am using contains the Lucid icons repackaged for Karmic, so while
I *am* using an unofficial PPA, I have re-checked and know that this can be
duplicated in version 0.5.1.5 (Lucid). I can also grab the latest bzr and
re-test if you would like.
2) Where has the fix been committed? I looked in
lp:ubuntu/humanity-icon-theme, and the preferences-desktop-theme icon is
exactly as I described. Where can I go to see this fix?

Thanks!

[Bug 545957] [NEW] tie in appearance icon needs to be recolored

2010-03-24 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: humanity-icon-theme

I am using humanity-icon-theme 0.5.1.5~paglia-ppa-karmic1 (Lucid icons
from PPA for karmic). The Appearance Preferences icon used to have an
orange shirt with a red tie, but the shirt was recolored purple, and now
there is a lack of contrast making it hard to see the tie. I tried to
recolor it to orange (in keeping with the new Ubuntu colors), and will
attach the old and my new icons, and a patch.

[Bug 537358] Re: .doc .xls .ppt .adp icons use Microsoft Office Mac logos

2010-03-16 Thread zpletan
Perhaps add a faux MS Office emblem to the icon. Rather like what has
been proposed here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/301035/comments/29
(see attachment, specifically windows partition icon)

[Bug 537358] Re: .doc .xls .ppt .adp icons use Microsoft Office Mac logos

2010-03-16 Thread zpletan
@Merk,

I thought the icons that are being addressed here are those I have
attached - the one you attached is the .odt icon. I am using karmic,
but I assume nothing has changed in Lucid.

[Bug 524734] Re: can't enable visual effects after adding new PCI card

2010-03-01 Thread zpletan
In the meantime, I have discovered a workaround to this issue. I was
experimenting with gnome-shell, and I set it as my default WM via the
GConf key /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager.
After getting tired of Gnome-shell, I wanted to re-enable compiz, and
discovered, to my delight, that setting this key to "compiz" starts
compiz up at login time.

[Bug 508214] Re: "Bastard mode" in Quadrapassel should be renamed

Could rename this option to "Computer cheats" - in fact I've already
apt-get source'd gnome-games and done exactly that.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: branding-ubuntu

the branding-ubuntu package should include a splash screen for GIMP -
how about converting /usr/share/example-

[Bug 527763] [NEW] gnometris !...@#$%^& mode

2010-02-25 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

In Gnometris preferences under Karmic, under the Game tab there is an
option for mode.

This should be changed for 2 reasons:
1) This is an extremely foul word and I have trouble letting my little brothers
play gnometris. Ubuntu is supposed to be the free OS for everyone, but I am
forced to exclude my young brothers from playing this.
2) This does not say anything about what it does, and a person is forced to go
read the Help manual - if they even know it exists!

I recommend that this option be changed "Computer cheats".

[Bug 524734] [NEW] can't enable visual effects after adding new PCI card

2010-02-19 Thread zpletan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I am using Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) with gnome-control-center
2.28.1-0ubuntu1.

I have a graphics adapter, PCIID 8086:2562, which compiz blacklists (for
good reason). However, I recently installed a new PCI graphics
card, while leaving the old one in because it is part of the motherboard.
I also installed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers for my new graphics
card.

I commented out the PCI blacklist in /usr/bin/compiz, and compiz (by
running compiz --replace) runs fine. I then decided that I would not
like this to become re-commented whenever compiz gets updated, so I
reinstalled compiz, and added the line "SKIP_CHECKS=yes" to
~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager. Compiz still runs fine (checked by
running metacity --replace and then compiz --replace).

And now, the main point - I go to System->Preferences->Appearance and
set Visual Effects to None. Then I set it back to Custom (I have
installed ccsm-simple), and a window pops up searching for drivers, and
then I am informed that Desktop effects could not be enabled. When I
restart and then log in, my window manager is still set to metacity,
forcing me to run compiz --replace.

How can I get gnome-appearance-properties to let me enable Visual
Effects/compiz?
