[Bug 1945202] [NEW] Tar changes folder ownership when run under root

2021-09-27 Thread Zsolt Ero
Public bug reported:

I got locked out of my server via SSH, simply by extracting a tar file.
No matter how crazy it sounds, it is reproducible.

1. login as root
2. wget
https://github.com/aristocratos/btop/releases/download/v1.0.9/btop-1.0.9-linux-x86_64.tbz`
3. tar -xjvf btop-1.0.9-linux-x86_64.tbz`

At this point the /root folder has ownership of user:user (1000:1000)
and the root is locked out from SSH login. I had to fix the server via
KVM.

auth.log contained the following:
"Authentication refused: bad ownership or modes for directory /root"

This seems to be a bug in tar, as the above behaviour doesn't happen when
logged in under any non-root user.
With non-root users the directory does not change ownership.
With root user, no matter where I extract the tar file, the directory changes
ownership.

[Bug 1921632] Re: build module CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_SOUNDWIRE_SOF_MACH=m for 5.11, 5.13-rc2 and later

2021-06-13 Thread Herczeg Zsolt
My machine is a Dell XPS 9700, happy to provide hardware info or any
other details you may be interested in. With -20 kernel audio and 4k
support is both broken. Audio behaves exactly like with unpatched -16 or
-17 kernels, only "dummy output" is present no onboard input/outputs are
visible.

Would there be any data/tests that you have in mind to see why the -20
kernel does not correctly handle the audio devices? I'm happy to perform
those if you give me a general direction.

[Bug 1921632] Re: build module CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_SOUNDWIRE_SOF_MACH=m for 5.11, 5.13-rc2 and later

2021-06-10 Thread Herczeg Zsolt
I went ahead and tested 5.11.0-19 and 5.11.0.20, neither of them works.
5.11.0-19 does not boot to GUI at all, 5.11.0-20 has no audio and
touchpad broken.

I'm currently on a self-built 5.11.0-17 where the only change is the two
soundwire configs and this works amazing. What has happened to -19 and
-20 kernels besides the config change?

[Bug 1924685] Re: No sound output/input available after installing 21.04

2021-05-19 Thread Herczeg Zsolt
~mesouug I've tested my XPS 9700 on the self-compiled ubuntu kernel, and
it works great with a 4-pin plug, even the microphone input of the
headset is fully functional. There may be hardware differences within
the XPS 9700 line as well, but the driver must be fully functional for
at least some of the hardware sold.

Are you confident your headset should be compatible? Not all 4-pin
headphones have the same pin order, which was historically a common
problem.

Haven't try the headset microphone input, but I believe it may be a
separate bug cause i've seen error reports for that on 20.04/20.10
versions with DKMS drivees. I'll try the headset input as soon as I get
my hands on a 4-wire headset and check the status on my machine.

I believe that this bug for 21.04 is the same as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1924685 and the
root cause is the misconfiguration of kernel flags.

[Bug 1924685] Re: No sound output/input available after installing 21.04

2021-04-24 Thread Herczeg Zsolt
I'm affected by this bug, and I can confirm that the root cause is a
misconfiguration of kernel flags as described in this mailing list:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=976791#35

I've used the ubuntu wiki Build Your Own kernel guide
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel) to enable the
CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_USER_FRIENDLY_LONG_NAMES=y option, and I can
confirm it works.

Is there any chance that we can get the configuration options into the Ubuntu
builds as follows?
CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_USER_FRIENDLY_LONG_NAMES=y
CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_SOUNDWIRE_SOF_MACH=m

Seems like debian has already fixed this misconfiguration.

The problem still exists with kernel 5.4.0-64-generic.
The last working kernel version for me is 5.4.0-54-generic
In case I remove the wifi adapter (ASUSTek Computer, Inc. AC51), then the
system is stable again without network.
The attached dmesg output has been collected with kernel version:

2020-07-28 Thread Zsolt Farago
Hi,

analyzing the problem by comparing dmesg of 184 and 186 kernel:

The renaming of the network interfaces is missing from 186 kernel dmesg,
it is working with eth0 and eth1 instead of p1p1 and p2p1.

These lines are existing in the 184 kernel dmesg but missing from 186
kernel dmesg:

[0.712610] r8169 :03:00.0 p2p1: renamed from eth0
[0.725263] systemd-udevd[122]: renamed network interface eth0 to p2p1

[Bug 50093] Re: Some sysctls are ignored on boot

2019-02-14 Thread Zsolt Ero
Actually, the line which works without specifying a PATH in a cron.d
file is the following:

@reboot root /bin/sleep 5 && /sbin/sysctl --system

[Bug 1754294] Re: After last updated libcurl3 on libcurl4, some apps are removed.

2018-12-15 Thread László Zsolt Nagy
I have installed Ubuntu 18.04 because I thought it must already be
stable. Then I had to find out that it is impossible to run node js 11
and mongodb 4 on the same system, just because node js 11 depends on
libcurl4 and mongodb-org 4 depends on libcurl3, and they cannot coexist.
Come on, this bug has been here for more than 6 months now! I don't have
a choice but to select a different distribution. :-(

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:

* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

[Bug 1647217] Re: Nautilus “Open with …” context menu gone on upgrade to yakkety

2018-05-14 Thread Zsolt
"the current maintainers are quite open to comments"

Doesn't seem like it.

Check out:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=747706
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=777132

In the former several people expressed their frustration about this
change, no comment was arguing for the change, they were told to open a
separate issue. They did (see the second link) and there the maintainer
doesn't seem to be reasonable about this at all. He is very polite
though, but pretty certain about the new behaviour being the best one
for most of the users.

The maintainer referred to this usability test:
https://renatagegaj.wordpress.com/2016/08/23/gnome-usability-test-results-part-1/
https://renatagegaj.wordpress.com/2016/08/26/gnome-usability-test-results-part-2/

It has nothing to do with Nautilus and it's based on a feedback from 10
users!!! Wow. How many users does Gnome have from how many
countries/cultures, professions, age groups, etc.? And this is not the
first time that I see some unexplainable change occur in a major
component (i.e. something that I use on a daily basis) of Ubuntu with a
similiar reaction from the maintainer(s). And it'll not get
fixed/reverted before one or two Gnome/Ubuntu releases, I'm pretty sure
of it. I only hope somebody comes up with a PPA where a patched version
of Nautilus will become available with the old behaviour of the "Open
with" right-click menu item.

[Bug 1645002] [NEW] ssh sessions are not cleanly terminated on shutdown/restart with systemd

2016-11-26 Thread Zsolt Ero
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 16.04, a "reboot" command does not terminate the ssh session.
This results in clients hanging, until timing out (sometimes as much as
120 seconds).

This also introduces bugs to all orchestration / automation tools which work
over SSH, since they cannot issue their reboot equivalent for Ubuntu 16.04
hosts. For example, have a look at this issue for Fabric:
https://github.com/fabric/fabric/issues/1488

The exact same bug has been fixed in Debian in version openssh/1:7.2p2-6.
There is a very detailed discussion in their bug tracker:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=751636

[Bug 1644996] [NEW] logrotate config uses syslog group

2016-11-26 Thread Zsolt Ero
Public bug reported:

The default logrotate config uses the "syslog" group.

> # use the syslog group by default, since this is the owning group
> # of /var/log/syslog.
> su root syslog

This is not correct anymore since 16.04, because:

1. "syslog" group doesn't exist on a stock Ubuntu 16.04 system, it only gets
installed via rsyslog
2. The owning group is actually "adm".

This results in logrotate terminating with the following error during
cron.daily run:

run-parts -v /etc/cron.daily
run-parts: executing /etc/cron.daily/logrotate
error: /etc/logrotate.conf:7 unknown group 'syslog'

And can be fixed by changing syslog to adm group.

This is not present when rsyslog is installed, but only because that package
creates the syslog group. This is a common bug in lighter environments, like
Docker, where syslog-ng is a common choice instead of rsyslog, like in this
issue:
https://github.com/phusion/baseimage-docker/issues/338

[Bug 837954] Re: knockd service fails to start when connecting with NetworkManager

2015-10-26 Thread Zsolt Lauter
Um... I observed that it happens because my wireless interface is down
when knockd is about to start. It usually happens during boot and after
the machine resumed from suspend.

I thought I'll give a try to "After=network-online.target" option for
the systemd config of knockd but I didn't find any configuration. It
looks like there's an old-style init script under the hood.

Finally I wrote a bash script that starts or stops knockd when the
interface is up/down, made it executable and placed to
/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/ - it's working now.

[Bug 837954] Re: knockd service fails to start when connecting with NetworkManager

2015-10-05 Thread Zsolt Lauter
It doesn't start automatically on 15.04 with the following options:

/etc/default/knockd:
START_KNOCKD=1
KNOCKD_OPTS="-i wlan0"

/etc/knockd.conf:
[options]
logfile = /var/log/knockd.log

[SSH]
sequence = :tcp,:udp,:tcp
seq_timeout = 5
start_command = /usr/sbin/ufw allow from %IP% to any port 22
tcpflags = syn
cmd_timeout = 10
stop_command = /usr/sbin/ufw delete allow from %IP% to any port 22

systemctl status knockd.service tells it's "active (exited)".

[Bug 1495983] [NEW] [Hyper-V] kernel panic occurs when installing Ubuntu Server 15.10 x32

2015-09-15 Thread Zsolt Dudás
Public bug reported:

Attempting to install the latest build of Ubuntu Server 15.10 (Wily
Werewolf) x32 on Hyper-V, after beginning installation a kernel panic
occurs. The console log from the serial output is attached.

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily/current/

I tried with the builds from 14th and 15th of September with the same result.
This bug does not affect x64 builds.
Tried to start the installation with different resources with no effect, kernel
panic always occurs no matter the VM settings.

[Bug 1296270] Re: Have to login twice after suspending

2015-04-26 Thread Zsolt Lauter
Since I upgraded to Vivid I get exactly the same issue Nils mentioned
here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1296270/comments/25
and I didn't have any double locks before. I had only the LightDM lock
screen, but now the old Gnome screensaver-like lock screen appears as
well, just before the LightDM lock. The funny thing is that the old-
style lock still appears even if I uncheck both System settings /
Brightness and lock / Require my password when waking from suspend and
System settings / Privacy / Security / Require my password when: Waking
from suspend.

[Bug 1053898] Re: udisks-daemon ate all system memory, then crashed system

2014-01-31 Thread Herczeg Zsolt
What causes this stupid bug? It makes USB creator totally useless.

(However it's not related to pendrive size. It happens with me even with
4 or 32 Gb drives

[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2013-11-11 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
I suspect there are also other related problems here. I always used the
right control (while pressed) option, but since 13.10 it seems to
identify the Right CTRL key the same as Right ALT on my keyboard. Is
that normal???

Gnome-tweak-tool does not work here either, nothing I set there takes
effect.

[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2013-11-11 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
Sorry, the Right CTRL thing was unrelated...

The PPA does the job, but obviously it's not the same as the good old
options.

Why the hell did they have to remove the button that brought up the
advanced keyboard options from the Gnome settings? I just HATE when
they keep removing good old things that worked, just to show people that
they are actually doing something...

[Bug 1241258] Re: wallpaper doesn't span across multiple monitors, white background shows instead

2013-11-03 Thread Zsolt Lauter
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1241252 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1241252

I have the same issue. When I switch between the screen of my laptop and
the external monitor, the background of the external one suddenly
changes to blank white sometimes (the background colour of the launcher
on the external screen doesn't change but the notable objects from the
wallpaper shown below the launcher aren't there so the launcher keeps
the colour but misses the background image). Right click on the blank
white screen shows the menu and icons are visible as well.

I think it's not a duplicate of bug #1241252: the top menu bar doesn't
change.

I'm not sure it matters but according to lshw, I has an nVidia GT218M
[NVS 3100M] and I use the binary 319.60 driver (nvidia-319-updates).

2013-10-31 Thread Zsolt Fatér
Public bug reported:

I have more laptop with radon graphics card and I use xorg opensource
driver for it (not fglrx).

When I connect a secound monitor and the resolution are diference of the

it will be a little strange (you ccan see it in the attached picture).

Easy reproducate it:

1. connect the secound monitor
2. xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024 --rate 60
3. xrandr --output LVDS --left-of VGA-0 (after that you can see same thing as
in the attached picture)

In Ubuntu version 12.04, it is'nt a problem. From Ubuntu 12.10 I can
reproducate it to Ubuntu 13.10.

[Bug 1134375] Re: bluetooth indicator is missing when bluetooth antenna is off, giving the user no way to *enable* bluetooth

2013-05-12 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
same here, I can also activate bluetooth from the System settings, but
this makes the panel icon virtually useless, which is a shame after it
became somewhat nicer in 13.04. if this a design, then a very stupid
one...

[Bug 1178494] [NEW] samsung_lapotop not loads

2013-05-09 Thread Herczeg Zsolt
Public bug reported:

The samsung laptop kernel module not loaded on a Samsung Series 7
Chronos 700Z laptop, so there is no support for keyboard backlight and
turning onoff wifi and bluetooth.

I think that support could be easly added (or fixed?) cause very similar
machines are supported. I would happily help in it in any way I can.

Re: [Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2013-05-08 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
earlier the workaround with removing the ominous line didn't work for me,
so I tried to set it to false as carl davis suggested in comment #23 and
and it works. it looks like this method should work for anyone. it somehow
removes the line anyway.
Sry, I just want to note that removing system-ca-certs=true from
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections solved the problem for me!

[Bug 1170885] Re: Samsung Laptop support module doesn't load for Samsung NP900X3C-A06AU

2013-05-08 Thread Herczeg Zsolt
I have the same bug on my Samsung Series 7 notebook. The modul would be
important to set the keyboard backlight.

# modprobe samsung-laptop
ERROR: could not insert 'samsung_laptop': No such device

I've tried to compile and insert the latest samsung_laptop module from
the git repos, but it fails with the same message:

# insmod
Asztal/samsung-laptop-dkms-master/drivers/platform/x86/samsung-laptop.ko
Error: could not insert module
Asztal/samsung-laptop-dkms-master/drivers/platform/x86/samsung-laptop.ko: No
such device

I'll try it now with a Precise Pangolin live CD to see if it loads.

How can I help more on fixing this bug?

2013-05-06 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
u are absolutely right, fanko, my faculty doesn't provide a cert either and
I can confirm that people always follow the faculty's instructions. we have
a nice step by step tutorial for each OS and I also used when I set up
eduroam for the 1st time.

this bug is critical.

[Bug 728804] Re: NetworkManager connection timeout on Wlan0

Hi!

Is there a way to force Network Manager to wait more?
I'd like to avoid this message somehow: association took too long, failing
activation. :)
By the way, I had a timeout/delay problem on my Dell machine as well when I
tried to connect to an OpenVPN network (connecting to other OpenVPN networks
worked like a charm) with Network Manager on Ubuntu 12.10 but I was able to
connect from my CentOS virtual machine with an older version of NM. But I think
it's a different story. :)

upgrading is not good. try to fire up a usb image and try if it it can
connect in the live mode. the problem is probably with the upgrade. but
first try to connect to a hidden network.

2013-03-25 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
I have tries with different certificates (cause my school haven't issued
one) and it didn't work. currently there's no way for us to connect to
eduroam in 13.04.

I've tried all sorts of certificates in the last few days (searching on
google people say to use different types of them) but I couldn't make
this work. Moreover the Eduroam site says to leave the certificate field
empty. I can connect with my telephone with no problems so I'm sure the
problem is not related to my account. I'll check if it works with an
 older ubuntu version asap.

[Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to Eduroam (worldwide WiFi network for university students)

2013-03-24 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
I'm marking this again as new, cause the definition of invalid says that
it should be a support request which it is not, because canonical cannot
provide support to solve it.

most people don't know what a CA certificate is, so you can't leave it
this way, cause they will say, that ubuntu just cannot connect and they
are moving back to windows... you have to consider what normal people
will think about this.
