I've had freeze ups for a while now and I seem to remember it occurring after a kernel upgrade a while back. Would generally have to reboot and sometimes boot from a live install CD to fix disk errors. I see the same problem on a fresh 12.04 install on a Dell E6410 with a SSD. Thanks, I hadn't marked it as Invalid as I'm still investigating. In my opinion we have to keep an eye on this issue, maybe it is a combination of hardware failure with bad reaction of the Linux kernel. Surprisingly I left the system running for a while and suddenly "dmesg" stopped reporting the error and the system came back to normal. I have rebooted a couple of times afterwards with no problems so far (of course it may fail any time now). In this case it may be a hardware problem after all, I ran the Diagnostics that Dell provides at boot up, and it is reporting a Hard Disk error.
