Thanks 3vi1 for posting the explanation of your issue! I got the same
error message and when I saw your post I remembered that I had built a
custom version a few months back. Saved me some time.

Please close this as INVALID.  I just tested on a VM and could not
recreate the issue.

Looking closer, my issue was probably due to an installation of Octave
that had been compiled from source and was resident in /usr/local/bin.
