[Bug 1006197] Re: Empathy is an insane memory hog

2014-05-09 Thread Walter Garcia-Fontes
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test
it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running
apport-collect and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

Marking as confirmed due to the fact that it is affecting multiple users
and cause (superficially at least) is now obvious.

[Bug 1006197] Re: Empathy is an insane memory hog

2012-07-31 Thread Nick Phillips
OK, I've worked out what the problem is. Exchange Server. Well, not
exactly, but it is involved.

If you have Evolution configured to use a MAPI account, and you're a
reasonably large site, you have a *lot* of contacts in the Exchange
Global Address Book. Anything using libfolks seems to pick this up and
load them all into memory - I've just discovered that gnome-contacts and
gnome-shell also both use about 700M too much memory on my machine
(login with gnome-shell takes *forever*...) when I have a MAPI account
configured. If I disable the account, login is fine, empathy is fine
etc.

The problem appears to be that the different uses of a contact
list/address book are not being handled differently - I *need* the
addresses available in evolution in order to e.g. autocomplete site-
local email addresses, but I have no use at all for most of them when
using empathy or gnome-shell!

I have no idea what interface libfolks provides, so no idea whether this
problem is caused by empathy/gnome-shell/gnome-contacts misusing
libfolks, or whether it is (which is my suspicion) a design flaw in
libfolks - assuming that loading the contacts of an address book into
memory is a reasonable thing to do, which it ain't.

Please feel free to reassign/duplicate this bug as appropriate.

[Bug 1006197] Re: Empathy is an insane memory hog

2012-06-28 Thread Ryan Novosielski
I am having similar problems:

novosirj 16785 1 0 12:07 ?00:01:13 empathy
novosirj 31955 1 9 16:10 ?00:00:27 /usr/lib/empathy/empathy-chat

So that would indicate to me that the app has been running 4 hours or so
as it's now 16:15 here. Empathy frequently turns up in a "top" listing,
sometimes between 10-20% CPU. I also noticed this turning up around the
time I upgraded to precise.

Incidentally, while gathering the debug log, the debugger crashed. :-P

[Bug 1006197] Re: Empathy is an insane memory hog

2012-05-31 Thread Nick Phillips
OK, started empathy, waited until roster displayed:

13389 nwp 20 0 1938m 704m 23m S3 17.9 0:53.75 empathy

Will attach log.

I have, as I said, one jabber account and one google talk account
active. Disabled accounts are one each facebook, aol, yahoo,
bonjour/zeroconf/rendezvous, and two jabber.

Should mention - until recently (possibly precise upgrade, but possibly
more recent), same accounts worked fine.

Cheers,

Nick

[Bug 1006197] Re: Empathy is an insane memory hog

2012-05-31 Thread Brian Curtis
I know you mentioned you haven't had it on for long, and you gave us a
few protocols. In order to test/reproduce I'll need a more exact time to
get high memory usage and a comparable number of accounts set up.

2012-05-31 Thread Brian Curtis
Thanks for your bug report and helping to make Ubuntu better.
- How long have you had empathy up and running?
- How many protocols (AIM/Jabber/GTalk etc...) do you have accounts set up for?

Please use Help->Debug and save a log from "All" and attach it to this
report.
