[Bug 1012629] Re: grub-installer ignores "bootdev" setting in preseed file
This is still broken for me in Trusty 14.04.5 Interestingly it only appears broken on servers with a storage controller AND disks on the motherboard scsi host (sata or sas). That may or may not be pertinent/related, but I've so far been unable to get it to break in the same way on hosts with a bunch of disks only on the on-board controller. hbogert's fix (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub- installer/+bug/1012629/comments/33) has worked when introduced in our disk recipe script. [Bug 1012629] Re: grub-installer ignores "bootdev" setting in preseed file
I'm still hitting this. Though this could be partly blamed on the fact that i'm setting `grub-installer/bootdev ...` dynamically at `partman/early_command`. Fix for me was to add the following to the early_command as well: . /usr/share/debconf/confmodule;\ db_fset grub-installer/bootdev seen true -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1012629 Title: grub-installer ignores "bootdev" setting in preseed file To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/1012629/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1012629] Re: grub-installer ignores "bootdev" setting in preseed file
So I've been doing a lot of work in this area recently. After looking closely through partman-partitioning, and create_new_label forces a gpt partition table if the volume is above 2TB. This makes sense, since disks >2TB tend to have issue with msdos partition tables. Unfortunately my slightly older, bios-booting/legacy-booting system just does not want to boot off of gpt disks. As a result it will not boot after install, even though grub-installer successfully installs. So for me the solution is to either use smaller disks or boot using efi. Hopefully this doesn't muddy the waters any more than it already is. Additionally if people are still having issues it would be beneficial to start over in a new case and start the problem definition from scratch. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1012629 Title: grub-installer ignores "bootdev" setting in preseed file To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/1012629/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1012629] Re: grub-installer ignores "bootdev" setting in preseed file
I'm also experiencing issues with grub-installer ignoring/overriding the bootdev setting on Ubuntu Server 14.04.2 w/ Software RAID (at least when set using the debconf-set command). I had to resort to using the same type of workaround as mentioned in post #27, so I thought I'd share some details of it here for reference: ... # Identify disks larger than 1 TiB d-i partman/early_command string \ DISKLIST=$(for f in $(list-devices disk); \ do fdisk -l $f 2>/dev/null | sed -nr 's|^Disk (/[^:]+):.* [0-9]{13,} bytes$|\1|p'; done | sort); \ echo "${DISKLIST}" > /tmp/disklist ... # Manual GRUB installation d-i grub-installer/skip boolean true d-i lilo-installer/skip boolean true d-i preseed/late_command string \ in-target apt-get -y install grub-pc; \ for line in $(cat /tmp/disklist); do in-target grub-install --force "${line}"; done; \ in-target update-grub ... This works for me on two separate systems where one has the (system) disks on sda+sdb and the other on sdb+sdc. Here is an expanded version of the first part which includes the partition recipe: # Identify disks larger than 1 TiB d-i partman/early_command string \ DISKLIST=$(for f in $(list-devices disk); \ do fdisk -l $f 2>/dev/null | sed -nr 's|^Disk (/[^:]+):.* [0-9]{13,} bytes$|\1|p'; done | sort); \ echo "${DISKLIST}" > /tmp/disklist; \ DISKA=$(echo "${DISKLIST}" | head -n 1); \ DISKB=$(echo "${DISKLIST}" | head -n 2 | tail -n 1); \ debconf-set partman-auto/disk "${DISKA} ${DISKB}"; \ debconf-set partman-auto-raid/recipe "1 2 0 ext2 /boot ${DISKA}2#${DISKB}2 . 1 2 0 ext4 / ${DISKA}3#${DISKB}3 ." The rest of the partitioning is just a standard 'd-i partman- auto/expert_recipe string multiraid' config that does not need to reference the disk variables.

@david-partain I was able to work around the error that I was experiencing by ensuring that there was a valid partition table on /dev/sdb. That makes sense as well. [Bug 1012629] Re: grub-installer ignores "bootdev" setting in preseed file
@david-partain, this has been fixed in trusty, what you are experiencing is a new bug altogether. I was able to verify that forcing the bootdev in the preseed file does indeed force grub to install onto /dev/sdb when using the non-netboot install. However, when using the same preseed file with the netboot install I experienced the issue david-partain is complaining about. The grub- installer stage creates a red screen with the error message "Unable to install Grub in /dev/sdb Executing 'grub-install /dev/sdb' failed. This is a fatal error " Looking at virtual terminal 4 there is an error message "grub-install: error: unable to identify a filesystem in hostdisk//dev/sdb; safety check can't be performed." [Bug 1012629] Re: grub-installer ignores "bootdev" setting in preseed file
I've got the following in my preseed file: d-i partman-auto/disk string /dev/sdc d-i grub-installer/only_debian boolean false d-i grub-installer/bootdev string /dev/sdc We've got two machines intended as Ceph OSD nodes, they've got two 3TB HDDs on the two high-speed SATA ports and a 60GB SSD on a second. Since the SSD is mostly for the OS with the HDDs providing the bulk of the I/O, this is meant the HDDs wound up as sda and sdb with the SSD being called sdc. The BIOS is set to boot sdc first, and the other two disks will be initially unpartitioned so it's important that the boot-loader winds up on sdc. The above seems to do the trick. I rather suspect the docs are a little ambiguous, particularly with regards to the syntax used to specify bootdev which looks like a relic of GRUB-legacy days. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1012629 Title: grub-installer ignores "bootdev" setting in preseed file To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer/+bug/1012629/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1012629] Re: grub-installer ignores "bootdev" setting in preseed file
I've made a bootable USB drive that I am using to start off net installations of a customised ubuntu distro. The trouble is that the USB drive ends up as /dev/sda. Late in the install process the debian installer attempts to install grub to the MBR of /dev/sda despite the whole install going to /dev/sdb. This will force me to not preseed the grub portion of the install. This is a problem because I am an oem and I need unattended net installs (even if I do need a USB drive to kick the process off due to the bios not having PXE capability).
