failure in the lightdm logs, or possibly in dmesg or Xorg.0.log.  Good

If you purge and re-install fglrx, does it come up ok?

I ran updates because there was a more recent version of some fglrx
package, then purged fglrx and fglrx-updated, and now I get to the log
in screen.
But when I put in my username and password, the screen flashes to what
appears to be a tty with boot messages on it, and then I get dropped
back to the login screen.
It seems to me that the problems has disappeared. (But a new problem has
shown up that requires a different bug report.)
