@Christian: What are you talking about? I've been using Compiz for over
one year. XVideo in combination with Compiz/Beryl was flawed since the
beginning of the project (when using the intel or radeon driver from
Xorg). Bug 73471 is addressing this bug and it has been reported half a
year ago.

This is bug report is absolutely the same!

[Bug 102290] Re: Video does not work with Desktop Effects enabled

2007-04-24 Thread Nicolas Gorguès
Same problem here, with open source RADEON driver (r300) and AIGLX.

I may have found an explanation on the OpenSuse XGL Troubleshooting page
(http://en.opensuse.org/Xgl_Troubleshooting).
Here is the interesting quote:
---
General hardware dependent issues
 * XVideo will be very slow if hardware acceleration (pixel shaders) is not
available. If using a composite manager, it will only be fast if FBOs or
pBuffers are available and activated, or for fully opaque fullscreen windows
(turn on option
apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/unredirect_fullscreen_windows).

ATI / open source driver "radeon"
 * Driver has neither pBuffer nor FBO support. When using a composite manager
all windows are rendered in software and only compositing is hardware
accelerated. Astonishingly, this works well enough for most use cases.
---

Regarding lauching two instances of VLC and getting video output on the second
one:
> Mike I can confirm that it behaves exactly the same. The first video opened
> works 'some times' but not very often. The second video opened works no
> matter what you do with it.
I guess the second instance just fails over to x11 (poor video quality) with no
hardware acceleration, and no antialiasing...

Chakkaradeep: Your solution works, but what a terrible sacrifice in picture
quality
Compare normal settings without 3d effects enabled on a divx-xvid movie. And
you will see the quality loss.
So that workaround is for the ones who can not live without 3d effects until
the good folks at ubuntu solve this problem.

Ok, got it sorted in VLC

1) Open VLC
2) Go to Settings-->Preferences
3) Select Advanced Options on the right hand bottom
4) Select Video-->Output Modules and you would see checkbox to select Video
Output Module
5) Choose X11 Video Output in that

Now you can play videos in vlc too :)

If you that is tough to follow, please see the attachment

I solved this for Totem Movie Player by doing this,

Open your terminal , type gstreamer-properties and under Video Tab
,under Video Plugin choose X Window Syste, (No Xv).

Now movies get played in Totem.

But in other players like VLC, still it not playing and I tried
searching in the options but couldnt find anything that could allow me
to change the video plugin.

I am on Edgy but i have exactly the same problem but only in vlc.
I discover something funny with this bug. If you open two instance of vlc by
rapidly clicking 4 time on the vidéo icon it opens two instance of vlc :-) but
what's really fun is that one of the two works perfectly. No black screen you
can reduce the window and open it again it still work you can get in full
screen or use the cube to go on another desktop if you come back the video is
still playing. And no problem with the opacity of the window in movement. That
where all the problem i get with only one instance of vlc.

I have ATI radeon with open driver and xgl compiz

[Bug 102290] Re: Video does not work with Desktop Effects enabled

2007-04-05 Thread Joseph Smidt
Yeah, again evidence it is a refresh problem: When I run glxgears with
Desktop-effects enabled it is very choppy and I get this output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ glxgears
2430 frames in 5.0 seconds = 485.638 FPS
2554 frames in 5.0 seconds = 510.789 FPS
2531 frames in 5.0 seconds = 505.642 FPS
2542 frames in 5.0 seconds = 507.805 FPS
2544 frames in 5.0 seconds = 508.790 FPS

When I run glxgears with Desktop-effects turned off I get a clean run
with this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ glxgears
5239 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1047.699 FPS
5308 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1061.578 FPS
5310 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1061.834 FPS
5282 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1056.322 FPS
5315 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1062.818 FPS

I hope that is helpful

When Desktop-Effects is on Video doesn't play for me either for Totem,
