There is also a bug (which I've believe is fixed in the newer versions) where xscreensaver-getimage processes are not cleaned up with a wait() call once they complete. This means that leaving the screensaver running for a while (less than a day can do it, depending on the image change rate) will fill the process table. Once that happens you can't even unlock the screen anymore and all sorts of system processes start to fail. Another bug (fixed upstream) is that when new screensavers (hacks) are added, they are now automatically detected, and added to .xscreensaver. So, if I install xscreensaver and the rss-glx extras, on Gutsy, with an empty home directory, the rss hacks do not appear in the xscreensaver-demo GUI. It's necessary to manually edit ~/.xscreensaver to add them! This was fixed years ago upstream! Aye. I've been wondering why there haven't been any new hacks added for such a long time when we used to have one or two new ones every few months. Is there a .deb package of the new version available somewhere? I'll install that until Ubuntu gets updated. Come on folks. I switched from Debian to Ubuntu because Ubuntu had the newer stuff. Don't make me look for another Linux distro again. I agree with this bug. Although not needed the web utilities added that allow screensavers to get images from services such s flickr without modifying code would be greatly appreciated. On some machines, xscreensaver (and, for that matter, KDE's screensaver) doesn't seem to play nice with DPMS. Submitting a bug-report on a 2-year old release would be rather pointless. Also, would be nice to have all the latest hacks. In addition, the API has changed somewhat. Incidentally, the version number in the package (from Help->About) says 4.24, 21 Oct 2005.
