I got the same problem with my Epson Perfection 1260 with Feisty 7.04 64bits. I 
resolved it by changing warmup time option in /etc/sane.d/plustek.conf (I use 
Plustek backend) from -1 (automatic warmup) to 5 and it works fine.
If you want to know why automatic warmup takes long time, you can use following 
command line to get more information:
SANE_DEBUG_PLUSTEK=128 xsane
(replace PLUSTEK by your backend)
