Thanks very much -- did an apt-get install xine-ui, apt got that as well as an updated libxine module. I already had libdvdread, libdvdnav and libdvdcss. Once xine-ui was loaded DVDs load normally and offer full menu functionality through Totem. Many thanks for your help -- this is not a bug proper and can be closed now. I'll see if I can pass on this bit of wisdom to others. It seems that this is just a matter of installing the right packages. libdvdread and libdvdcss will always be needed. I installed libdvdnav as well. Only after installing xine-ui, some more packages were installed along with xine-ui and then dvd playback worked. same problem here. Forgot to note that when I run Totem through the GUI the following error results: Totem could not play 'dvd:/'. There is no plugin to handle this movie.
