A temporary work arround : Go to desktop setting (in xfe desktop) Then click on icon tab and uncheck removable media . Scratch comment #11. The problem does show up after install, it only looked like it went away because there was only two icons, but they are both the same device. I think unity uses nautilus for the desktop and xfce4 uses thunar. Yes, it is nautilus, so I also see this as a underlying problem. I do not know enough to make further guessing, but ... yes, gvfs is one possibility. Attached a screenshot shows two icons for two drives. Note that one set of icons has a different graphic than the other.
