[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2013-10-01 Thread Romano Giannetti
My solution, on a 13.04 system: use the standard language settings (not the
tweaks typing thing) and then add the extension AppIndicator support. Open
configuration and choose panel for keyboard. Now you have the keyboard status
indicator in the gnome panel. Voilà. Ou est voilá? :-)

Try better asking for it here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/gnome-shell/+bug/1096901 I believe no one gives a damn about this bug –
see its „Fix Released“ (the fix that never happened) status.

No idea what else there is to do, Ubuntu developers do not investigate
into this matter.

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2013-05-16 Thread greplnx
Just set org.gnome.desktop.input-soures.sources to
[('xkb','us'),('xkb','lng1'),('xkb','lng...')]

Reason: open up /usr/share/gnome-shell/ui/panel.js, realize that

const PANEL_ITEM_IMPLEMENTATIONS['keyboard'] =
imports.ui.status.keyboard.InputSourceIndicator;

Check /usr/share/gnome-shell/ui/status/keyboard.js and find

const DESKTOP_INPUT_SOURCES_SCHEMA = 'org.gnome.desktop.input-sources';

const InputSourceIndicator = new Lang.Class({
//...
// see where and how DESKTOP_INPUT_SOURCES_SCHEMA is used
//...
)};

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2013-05-16 Thread sgon00
By following greplnx (greplnx) tip, I did the following:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources sources
[('xkb','us'),('xkb','cn')]
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources show-all-sources true

I am using ibus and switch between English and Chinese inputs.

After doing the above setup, I can see en and zh layout in gnome 3.6
top-right panel, whichi is good!

But the problem is the Keyboard Layout is not integrated with my ibus input
method.
When I change en to zh from top panel, nothing happens, I am still using
English input method. OR
when I use control+space change English input method to Chinese input method,
the top panel layout still shows en.

Thanks.

Re: [Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2013-04-12 Thread Žygimantas Beručka
It seems that no one cares about this bug despite it being reported many
times, see, e.g.:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1096901
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1096862
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1154486
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1115855

Jeremy said something mystic above about not being able to track this bug
due to too many comments or some other reason. Therefore I decided to make
a new bug report for this and yet I immediatelly realized it is not
necessary, as you can see: it's been reported OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I have
no clue what else is there left for one to do.

Therefore I would like to suggest you to click those bugs and mark that you
are affected by them/it too, since probably no one reads the comments here
anyway. Maybe then someone would pay a slightest attention to this.

My 0.02 c.

Why is it so hard to make the Layouts back as they were before? Now
there is no difference between the Romanian Keyboard Layouts (only their
names differ, the Layout is the same for all of the seven). Can someone

in Romanian (standard), not in Romanian, where I have to place
diacritics by using the Alt key and it's really a pain in the arse.

NO fix for this bug so far, even using GNOME 3 ppa does not fix it! Why
does it take so freaking long? It's not a kernel bug, why in the world
does it take so long to fix it?

2012-12-31 Thread George Karavasilev
So, it seems under 12.10 with Gnome 3 PPA the Input Sources are not ported
completely. This is how the look in the normal Gnome 3.6:
http://blogs.gnome.org/mclasen/2012/09/21/input-sources-in-gnome/
And in 12.10 w/ the Gnome 3 PPA that's not the case, hence the bug.
Jeremy, it does need fixing.

Fujiwarat is definitely the main author of ibus-gjs and now the active

the state of GNOME 3.6 keyboard plugin. I also have no idea why it
seems quite difficult to port ibus-gjs git master to 3.6. (I tried but

I definitely use d-d-l, but it sucks.
The developers generally don't listen and I seriously don't think
there was/is/will be public vote for GNOME roadmap.
I value contribution but contributing to a open source close mind

like E17, MATE (the list is just my personal view) is definitely a
better option.
I used to hate GNOME rants. But now I feel ranting is actually a
positive action to keep uninformed people away from junks.

Yep. That is bad.
Do you like vanilla Nautilus 3.6?

Probably also the Totem issue you feel strong about.
Yep, fortunately smplayer has that function too.

I like the concept of gnome shell, the new design, the idea. But not the
way some crazy people destroy it. I mean if they just let the gnome

That it discomfort. I prefer doing it just with mouse, because I, and lts
of people like me, have bad eyes and my laptop is usually a bit far from me,
because eyeglasses make me tired. So i must reach laptop each time i switch
screens or do it long way. Usually desktop environment gives priority of

improved terminal, its desktop.

You set it to auto-hide mode?
Yep. I know, there is a way to change sensitivity of how far I must push the
mouse. But i.most ppl don't. Not for human beings ii.I tackled sensitivity
whole day. No real profit. There is just something buggy in the mechanism, like
it reacts with random sensitivity...

Have you used Unity Lens?
Well... Improved search. A stuff people use not often. Well, I don't. I know
where are my files :)
Amazon is not such a problem for me. It can be disabled, plus... Well we have

Yes, Windows is constantly improving (not sure about Windows 8).
Meanwhile, Linux desktop is doing CADT.
http://www.jwz.org/doc/cadt.html

Stability? Errors from the moment I log in.

Can you tell which program crashes?
I don't have this myself but I've heard of similar things.

 Comfort? Not even funny.

I don't know what you exactly mean.
If GNOME (S)hell and Unity annoyed you.

GNOME hell is hell, they just break a quite successful desktop
metaphor and give some half baked tablet metaphor instead.
I encourage GNOME refugee to use MATE (GNOME 2 fork) or Xfce.
They both have several solvable glitches but after all decent.

Unity is probably not appealing to Windows (before 8) or GNOME 2 users.
It is actually quite familiar for those who used to OS X metaphor.
It is more buggy, unfortunately.
I met some Wine and NM that only happens on Unity, I don't have a clue.
Last but not least, Unity uses many GNOME components anyway, so any
GNOME's junk will eventually pass to Unity.

 Bugfixes faster? Not any more.

It depends on distribution I guess.
Ubuntu developers won't fix anything that requires a large debdiff
after stable release (unless it is a security bug).

BTW, I just saw that R/T zoom was removed from totem player. Not a bug,

I'm sorry. What is R/T zoom?
For WMA support, shouldn't you just install ubuntu-restricted-extras
package at once?
( I do see this as a bug, I haven't used WMA for years, can you tell
me how to get a WMA file for test? )
Anyway, GNOME devs remove features (Yes, Present Simple Tense).
I'd check whether MATE forked Totem.
The future of Totem, I believe, looks like:
https://live.gnome.org/Design/Apps/Videos
( You should indeed put your hope on brands other than GNOME )

Well i'm gonna go back to lucid or even smth earlier... But if linux and
ubuntu don't come bach to human side, then no reason to keep using it.
Mandriva died in a very similar manner. 2009 version was full of new

What about Mageia?
Mageia is a Mandriva fork that seems to have a quite active and
healthy community.

I mostly like gnome shell. The error problem started after 12.04 and are ubuntu

Gnome shell has normal keyboard on fedora, so any distmaker must a bit polish
components of his system, that is just normal.
I honestly don't see any serious bugs in gnome shell now and I actually like
it's concept. I mean the style of minimalism + panel and windows on corner
touch is pretty good and comfortable for me...

Unity in comparison is not. Even without bugs its idea of side panel is
so tasteless, so ugly, so old. And absolutely no comfort. If i open two
windows of firefox in gnome shell I have no problem switching between
them. In unity I need mumbo jumbo, coz it has no comfortable mechanism
to switch just in one move. Plus its side panel appearance mechanism
makes someone wish to hit his PC with something heavy. It has
uncomfortable sensitivity settings. It appears when not needed, and it
doesn't appear when needed. It appears when mouse touches it
accidentally, but gets stupid, when I actually want it! So... Really I
don't get what are ppl in canonical doing? Are they from other planets?
They don't test stuff they make? They personally use mac and windows,
not their system? Because any human being without brain-processor
telepathic interface could understand, that there is Zero level of
comfort in Unity. Unity is terrible even after windows vista, which is
terrible in comparison with ANYthing linux. Even KDE 4.0 was better!

R/T zoom allows to change video size gradually. Not like 50%-100%-200% like in
most players, but 100%-110%-120%. It exists no more. Like it was a terrible
evil and needed to be removed... It feels like Microsoft pays this guys to
destroy a good OS...

Last versions of ubuntu had automatic intallation of packages for media.
Now I installed addons manually, but hey! If i didn't use ubuntu for 3
years, I would not know that, so for a new user it is a new problem.

I am a bit careful with anything mandriva yet... Plus, as i said, I like
gnome shell :D

I won't go back to proprietary OS but I feel that Karen Zagorski made
a good point.

We used to have unattractive, but almost working environment like
GNOME 2. We believed that some remaining glitches would be resolved in
a few releases.

It turns out that we get ground breaking stuff like GNOME 3 and Unity
in 2011. We are now struggling about things that probably been done
right since Windows 95. I haven't seen any improvements that could
potentially increase productivity / usability for quite a long time.

Talking about Canonical management or Mark Shuttleworth, I guess they
don't realize how buggy current Ubuntu is. So they continue to seek
new targets. I actually interested in whether I can evaluate
healthiness of current Ubuntu by doing some statistics. Many packages
are indeed unhealthy because there are many unanswered bug reports
piled up.

After a long spam, I'd give some advice on IBus users, if any.
I encourage you to use Fcitx in GNOME Shell environment.
I still encourage you to use IBus in KDE, LXDE, MATE, Xfce, Unity plus WMs.
Because GNOME input integration is a mess. The upstream integration is
problematic, as included in Fedora 18 (not released yet). There are
distributions disabled IBus integration like Arch and openSUSE 12.3
(not released yet). There is a distribution called Ubuntu 12.10 that
mix GNOME 3.4/3.6 stuff.
Fcitx ported most, if not all, third-party IBus engines. It has a well
maintained Shell extension:
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/261/kimpanel/
( All input method frameworks have working tray icon, but GNOME
developers don't like tray icons, so tray icons disappear in GNOME
Shell. Besides, IBus in Ubuntu has indicator patch, which may added an
additional layer of complexity.)
Switching to Fcitx and getting timely support from its mailing list is
the only working solution for inputting stuff under GNOME Shell.

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-12-01 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Sebastian Žygimantas, it works here with Ubuntu 12.10 and the GNOME3
PPA.

1. Add the GNOME3 PPA; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
2. Open System Settings and click Region Language
3. Switch to the Layout tab.
4. Click the + button to add additional keyboard layouts.

With 50 comments on this bug and dozens of subscribers I can no longer
effectively triage this bug. If you are still having problems, you need
to open your bug if you want it to get the attention it needs.

Sebastian, as I said in comment 33, it's not possible to fix this in the
regular archives for Ubuntu 12.10, at least not as long as the fix
requires a new version of gnome-settings-daemon and gnome-control-
center.

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-12-01 Thread Žygimantas Beručka
I'm following GNOME3 PPA since before the official Quantal release,
therefore every single package is updated. (I've got no other third-
party GNOME packages.)

I've tried steps 2-4 many times; I've even tried removing all 4 layouts
(Lithuanian, Russian, Greek and French) that I use (except the last
one), tried adding an American one and then remove all others; I've even
tried changing locale to English, logout and then login back and repeat
the steps again. Nothing.

And the logs also don't show anything.

Ok, I was mistaken about this needing ibus 1.4.99 (unless you use ibus
input methods in which case this is still broken). For everyone else,
this is fixed with gnome-control-center 3.6 which has been uploaded to
raring for Ubuntu 13.04.

What about IBus then?
The easiest way I can think of is that you white list IBus indicator / tray
icon in GNOME Shell.

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-11-27 Thread Ahmed El-Mahmoudy
Hello,

I upgraded from GNOME3 PPA, yet the keyboard indicator in GNOME Shell
is still blank. Also, when I click on it select Show Keyboard
Layout, it doesn't show anything, so I had a look at ~/.xsession-
errors, and I find this:

Window manager warning: Log level 8: g_variant_get_child_value: assertion
`index_ g_variant_n_children (value)' failed
JS ERROR: !!! Exception in callback for signal: activate
JS ERROR: !!! message = 'sources.get_child_value(current) is null'

So lines 359-361 in /usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/status/keyboard.js are:
   let sources = this._settings.get_value(KEY_INPUT_SOURCES);
   let current = this._settings.get_uint(KEY_CURRENT_INPUT_SOURCE);
   let [type, id] = sources.get_child_value(current).deep_unpack();

So, I run 'gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.input-sources',
and I get this:

org.gnome.desktop.input-sources current uint32 0
org.gnome.desktop.input-sources show-all-sources false
org.gnome.desktop.input-sources sources @a(ss) []
org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options @as []

That doesn't seem right, does it ?

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-11-25 Thread Žygimantas Beručka
I don't use Jeremy's ibus PPA, only GNOME3 PPA. But after the
yesterday's update I was unable to start neither GNOME nor Unity, all
the apps would segfault leaving such messages in dmesg:

[ 47.716480] nm-applet[2399]: segfault at 30 ip 7f22bc896526 sp
7fff1ea24670 error 4 in libgdk-3.so.0.600.0[7f22bc845000+7c000]

7fff917aef90 error 4 in libgdk-3.so.0.600.0[7fa8fb5ca000+7c000]

Since it complains something about libgdk, I thought maybe it has
something to do with the gnome-themes-standard package. And once I
downgraded this package to 3.6.0.2, I was able to load both GNOME and
all apps would work fine.

I wonder if it has something to do with that relocation of gtk engine
files in the package for Raring and backporting this to Quantal with
these files moved to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gtk-3.0/3.0.0/theming-
engines/ and /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/. By the
way, why does this updated package have a Gtk2 theme engine file and
3.6.0.2 doesn't?

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-11-25 Thread Julien Olivier
Hi,

I've reported it already here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=689036

Feel free to add your comments / backtrace.

Le lundi 26 novembre 2012 à 00:24 +, Žygimantas Beručka a écrit :
Okay, thanks! You fixed those segfaults with this upload.

However, I just found another source of segfaults related to these
recently updated packages. I lost the ability to adjust screen
brightness using my laptop's Fn+ScreenBrightnessUp/Down keys. Instead,
it causes gnome-settings-daemon to crash. I get dmesg filled with
 messages like this:

 [13929.207758] gnome-settings-[9069]: segfault at 61 ip 7fbec1744585
 sp 7fff2f822ea0 error 4 in libmedia-keys.so[7fbec1739000+25000]

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-11-24 Thread Dylan McCall
Seems the gnome-settings-daemon update has created some serious breakage
for some systems. (Well, all of mine, and two other people who have
taken the time to post on Ubuntu Forums). Wish I could spare the time to
get details for you, but I can't right now. Hope it works out, though. I
was excited to see Control Center 3.6 :)

Ok, I was mistaken about this needing ibus 1.4.99 (unless you use ibus
input methods in which case this is still broken). For everyone else,
this is fixed with gnome-control-center 3.6 which has been uploaded to
raring for Ubuntu 13.04.

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-11-13 Thread Francisco J. Rodriguez
Pretty annoying bug for those we are switching between languages all the
time like me (Spanish/English)... any trick of how to avoid it would be
welcomed.

Right now, the quickest (really slow) way to change it for me is:

Space+enter (I use Synapse)
Type Keyboard Layout
Go to the Layouts tab
Move Spanish to the top of the list at the left

... , not really quick

anyone knows how to do it quicker while the bug is still in process to
be fixed?

Thanks,

Hipo

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-11-13 Thread shaneonabike
I'm also confused as to why this is of low priority. I am a bit nervous
to install the PPA... and it indicates that it isn't stable. Have people
had much success cause I'm willing to try that. Could we not just deploy
a solution for this release that will also make it into 13.x

It seems weird they would have removed this feature - it's basically
removing accessibility for people of different languages.

Thanks for your efforts and work!

Regarding the gnome-tweak-tool : what is the exact name of the option in

2012-11-03 Thread TomsT
It looks like there isn't much enthusiasm to really fix this issue
without walking on razors edge between upgrading and braking packages;
so maybe someone with required skills can just create (if it is
possible) an extension at extensions.gnome.org with an layout indicator
allowing to change keyboard layouts or, at least, to be able to see
witch layout the user is using, making it easier to shortcut-switch
between them and writing passwords with the right layout?

@sebastian but it used to work in gnome 3.4. Volume control is not such
a problem, because you can just leave overview mode and adjust it. But,
what if you search for a program or file whose name contains both latin
and greek characters and what if you chat with someone and you want to
combine greek and english words (something really usual in my case ;) ?

I don't know if I should report this here or as a different bug, but
when you are in overview mode of gnome shell you cannot change the
language layout. The same problem exists when you type in the textfield
of the chat notification or when you insert a command through Alt+F2.
Sometimes, this is really annoying (especially when you use the chat
notification)

Installing the ppa did provide the keyboard layout indicator, but I find

CapsLock as a layout switcher (and Shift CapsLock for CapsLock), but the

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-10-21 Thread cyberIQ
I upgradet to 12.10 and the problem repeated!!!

After EVERY NEW UPGRADE for the last few years, I am having this
problem!!!

WHY IT'S SO COMPLICATED TO SOLVED A RIDICULOUS PROBLEM of keyboard
layout icon?

I am heavy on Writer, so CANNOT WORK without keyboard indicator. What
should I do? Go back to Windows/Word?

If Ubuntu lost us, the heavy users, they will get nothing with kids and
games. This is not game. THIS IS SERIOUS!!! We are using Ubuntu for
serious work.

That's why this problem (who occurs for YEARS) should be priority and
not be ranked as LOW...
