[Bug 1052360] Re: unattended-upgrade crashed with SystemError: E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) for an unknown reason

2017-10-18 Thread Balint Reczey
The error propagation is most likely fixed in 0.98, LP: #1632361 , while
u-u can't do much when dpkg fails. The next u-u run will try to recover
from the broken state.

[Bug 1052360] Re: unattended-upgrade crashed with SystemError: E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) for an unknown reason

2017-09-03 Thread gouri
Hello. Seen a crash report window appear on Ubuntu 16.04, mentioning
DuplicateOf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1052360 .

Also received the "unattended-upgrade" mail as usual. It said:

> Écriture du journal de dpkg dans «
> /var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades-dpkg.log »
> Échec de l'installation des mises à niveau !
> message d'erreur : « installArchives() failed »
> Dpkg a retourné une erreur ! Voir «
> /var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades-dpkg.log » pour les détails

Besides, /var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades-dpkg.log was

> Log started: 2017-09-02 06:34:22
> Error in function: install
> Log ended: 2017-09-02 06:34:22

So, no real clue here either.

Seen comment #24. Hard to open a new bug with so few information.

Perhaps the *real* bug is that code paths don't propagate errors with
enough details to allow proper tracing of what happends when things
fail?

My 2 cents. :-)

2014-07-17 Thread Alex Muntada
FWIW, I got this issue this morning when I logged into my desktop.

In my case the problem was that installing a new kernel failed because
there wasn't enough space in /boot (I have a really tiny /boot and this
happens whenever I forget to purge old kernels).

Hope this helps!

[Bug 1052360] Re: unattended-upgrade crashed with SystemError: E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) for an unknown reason

2014-05-07 Thread Olaf Meeuwissen
Just happened to me on trusty, installed yesterday.

Looking at my unattended-upgrades-dpkg log, it was immediately clear
that in my case it had nothing to do with unattended-upgrades itself.
There was a minor problem with the configuration options of one of the
programs that got invoked through the scriptlets in
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/. This caused that program (git, if you have to
know) to exit with an error. The error travelled up the call chain,
finally arriving at unattended-upgrades which gets the blame.

I guess that most of the people commenting here are experiencing
something similar: unattended-upgrades getting blamed for an error
condition that happens somewhere completely else. Please look at the
unattended-upgrades-dpkg log before blaming unattended-upgrades.

Re #14, looks like some other process grabbed the lock sometime before
unattended-upgrades got to call dpkg (via apt?). It could perhaps be
somewhat cleverer about that but if dpkg cannot do its work, there's not
much unattended-upgrades can do about that than complain and exit with
an error status. In case of a lock, it could reschedule itself or wait
until the lock becomes available.

Re #11, could be a botched PATH when run from cron.

Writing this up, I get the impression that apport is being (ab?)used to
report cron jobs that exited unsuccessfully. In the not-so-old days, I
would have expected something like this in the mail. Not a popup
inviting me to send a crash report.

command 'ubuntu-bug unattended-upgrades' and include the log file

I did a software update on a 12.10 server box this morning and I started
getting this error. I hadn't applied updates in a while.

2013-01-11 Thread avius
I can confirm I still get this bug on 12.10 after a software update.
Attached is a screenshot of the error report details, where I've
highlighted an erroneous message about gnupg and gpgv being out of date,
when in fact they are fully up-to-date on my system.

I can reproduce this bug in Xubuntu Quantal.
It happens shortly after every boot.
I sent an automatic crash report as well.

2012-10-14 Thread avius
I get this bug reliably and reproducibly.

STR:

1. Boot into Ubuntu
2. Wait roughly one minute
3. Crash notification that unattended-upgrades crashed with this signature.

Note: The crash dialogue even directed me to this Launchpad thread...

I am running 12.04

[Bug 1052360] Re: unattended-upgrade crashed with SystemError: E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

2012-10-03 Thread Michael Terry
Is this reproducable? Has anyone seen this on a release later than
11.10? (according to errors.ubuntu.com, it hasn't been seen except in
11.10)

There's no information in this bug that would help fix the crash.
There's no traceback or log information... :-/ Can't do much with this
as is.
