[Bug 1058218] Re: do-release-upgrade (lucid-precise) leaves postgres 8.4 in bad state

2012-10-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package postgresql-8.4 - 8.4.14-0ubuntu12.04.2

---
postgresql-8.4 (8.4.14-0ubuntu12.04.2) precise-proposed; urgency=low

  * debian/postgresql-8.4.preinst: Drop check for existing
/etc/init.d/postgresql-common, as this depends on the unpack order.
Instead bump the dependency on postgresql-common. (LP: #1058218)

[Bug 1058218] Re: do-release-upgrade (lucid-precise) leaves postgres 8.4 in bad state

2012-10-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package postgresql-8.4 - 8.4.14-0ubuntu12.04.1

---
postgresql-8.4 (8.4.14-0ubuntu12.04.1) precise-proposed; urgency=low

  * debian/postgresql-8.4.preinst: Do not only clean up the old -8.4 specific
init script when upgrading from 8.4.4-2, as we have newer upstream
versions in lucid-updates. Instead, remove the version specific init
script if we have the versionless one from postgresql-common. This fixes
postgresql-8.4 not restarting after the upgrade. (LP: #1058218)

postgresql-8.4 (8.4.14-0ubuntu12.04) precise-proposed; urgency=low

  * New upstream bug fix release: (LP: #1058218, #1055944)
- Fix planner's assignment of executor parameters, and fix executor's
rescan logic for CTE plan nodes.
These errors could result in wrong answers from queries that scan
the same WITH subquery multiple times.
- Improve page-splitting decisions in GiST indexes.
Multi-column GiST indexes might suffer unexpected bloat due to this
  error.
- Fix cascading privilege revoke to stop if privileges are still held.
If we revoke a grant option from some role X, but X still holds
that option via a grant from someone else, we should not
recursively revoke the corresponding privilege from role(s) Y
that X had granted it to.
- Fix handling of SIGFPE when PL/Perl is in use.
Perl resets the process's SIGFPE handler to SIG_IGN, which could
result in crashes later on. Restore the normal Postgres signal
  handler after initializing PL/Perl.
- Prevent PL/Perl from crashing if a recursive PL/Perl function is
  redefined while being executed.
- Work around possible misoptimization in PL/Perl.
Some Linux distributions contain an incorrect version of
pthread.h that results in incorrect compiled code in PL/Perl,
leading to crashes if a PL/Perl function calls another one that
  throws an error.

2012-10-15 Thread Martin Pitt
Thanks Scott! I'm reopening this for the remaining issue that 8.4 isn't
running after the upgrade without a reboot, and the old init.d file is
still around. I already uploaded a fix for this last week, but I
reuploaded it now to not include the previous changelog entries any more
as these are in -updates now.

2012-10-12 Thread Martin Pitt
Oh, I see; the fix in .1 is depending on the unpack order, that's why I
didn't see it. I have prepared a more robust fix, testing now. Answer to
comment 18 still appreciated to verify that we are indeed seeing the
same. Also, if it starts after a reboot, I'd really like to get the
current version into -updates ASAP, as it at least improves things from
upgrade is totally broken to needs a reboot after upgrade (which we
require anyway).

[Bug 1058218] Re: do-release-upgrade (lucid-precise) leaves postgres 8.4 in bad state

2012-10-04 Thread Martin Pitt
In lucid, postgresql-8.4 still had its own init script
/etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4, but on upgrades to precise this is replaced
with /etc/init.d/postgresql by postgresql-common. Do you still have an
/etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 after the upgrade? It's presence would
explain why /etc/init.d/postgresql did not restart 8.4.

Ah, I see the problem: postgresql-8.4.preinst only removes the old init
script when upgrading from 8.4.4-2 or earlier, but we have had new
upstream versions in lucid since then. So the migration code needs to be
updated.

[Bug 1058218] Re: do-release-upgrade (lucid-precise) leaves postgres 8.4 in bad state

2012-10-01 Thread Martin Pitt
I ran the p-common test suite against the -proposed 8.4 package (as well
as current -9.1), and it's all pass. David, can you please double-check
that the upgrade now works for you? Thanks!
