[Bug 1062735] Re: ethercodes.dat in arpwatch is out of date

2020-11-29 Thread terry b
I ended up just adding this to my crontab to pull an updated copy once a
month.

# Update the pci id file
20 120 * * /usr/sbin/update-pciids

The easy solution might be to add a cron file to do something similar. A
cleaner solution would be to include it into it a dedicated package.

[Bug 1062735] Re: ethercodes.dat in arpwatch is out of date

2013-01-23 Thread Drew Scott Daniels
man (section 8) massagevendor contains some notes about how to update it.
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/massagevendor

In the changelog Steve Langasek vor...@debian.org said:
  * Revert change in previous NMU that makes
/usr/share/arpwatch/ethercodes.dat a conffile; users who need to modify
this can use dpkg-divert instead. Closes: #552792, #550233.

This seems like it should be handled similarly to the whois database or
other periodically updated data (tzdata's probably one of the most
visable and most common to get updates). Maybe the freshclam of clamav
approach could be taken.
