[Bug 106418] Re: 2.6.20-15 still won't boot

2008-02-11 Thread Leann Ogasawara
If you are still experiencing problems, please test with the latest
Hardy Alpha release (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/). You
should be able to test via the LiveCD. If this issue still exists in
the Hardy release, please open a new bug report against the 'linux'
package. Starting with the Hardy release the ubuntu kernel source
package naming convention switched from 'linux-source-2.6.x' to just
'linux'. Thanks.

[Bug 106418] Re: 2.6.20-15 still won't boot

2007-04-23 Thread Manni
Here's another case: same problem, slightly different symptons.

I have two hard drives and two dvd drives. My boot partition is on the
first hard drive and my machine starts from that drive. All the rest of
my installation is on the second drive.

The machine will boot (after quite a while, while different xfermodes
are tried), but after booting, I cannot access the first harddrive.
While this drive was known as /dev/sda in edgy, feisty now lables the
second drive as sda. I no longer have a sdb device.

2007-04-23 Thread Macuyiko
2.6.20-15 also doesn't work on one of my machines (HP Compaq d330).

Ends with

ALERT! /dev/diks/by-uuid/. does not exist.
Dropping to a shell

Before I also get

ATA: abnormal status 0x7F on port 0x0...
and ATA: port is slow to respond 0xD0

errors.

This error also happens when using the Feist livecd.

Booting in Feisty with the 2.6.17-11 kernel works however. I'm using
uuids in menu.lst and fstab and they're all set correctly. Doing a
modprobe ide-disk and ide-generic in the Busybox shell did not work.
(Also, there is no /dev/sd* nor a /dev/disk/by-uuid present in the
Busybox shell.)

[Bug 106418] Re: 2.6.20-15 still won't boot

2007-04-14 Thread trejack
Problem persists with new install. I downloaded the daily build for
today, and got it installed, albeit a little strangely. When the live
cd booted, just like the 2.6.20-14 version I tried, couldn't do anything
with any of my partitions, and the installer failed to reformat them
from the wizard. Loaded gparted up, however, and the partitions were
there, with messages beside them. Reformated the one I wanted to use
(sda3). Reformat took maybe 3 seconds, and afterwards, new partiion came
right up, as well as the previously unavailable sda1 (my edgy
partition). Installed to sda3, even importing in settings from my edgy
install, without errors. On restart, same problems appeared, exactly as
reported above. Keep feeling like I'm missing something simple here...

[Bug 106418] Re: 2.6.20-15 still won't boot

2007-04-14 Thread trejack
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

From my forum post; 2.6.20-15.25 still does not fix:

I've had problems for about a week, and I'm unsure of how to proceed.
Installed Feisty beta, and had a rockin' system until upgrade from
kernel 2.6.20-13 to 2.6.20-14. Starting with .14, could not boot; system
would freeze early in the boot process, and would eventually exit into
busybox shell. Investigated all week, and I think the hang-up is related
to the switch to PATA; my (ide) drives are no longer hda, hdb, etc, but
now sda, sdb. The specific error message at the hang is "ata2.00: qc
timeout (cmd oxfer)" then "ata2.00:failed to set xfermode
(err_mask=0x4)." This has been consistent any time I've tried to boot
  the .14 kernel.

By the way 2.6.20-13 still booted fine at first. Had a problem when I
- upgraded (actually downgraded) vvidia-glx, because of a kernel mismatch,
+ upgraded (actually downgraded) nvidia-glx, because of a kernel mismatch,
and eventually had to start using the nv driver instead. I'm using
  2.6.20-13 with that driver now.

In busybox, looking at /dev, The drives are listed, but not the
partitions - sda, sdb, but not sda1, sdb1. This is confirmed by
downloading a daily build that uses 2.6.20-14, booting to it, and
installing gparted. It can see the drives, but the partitions have
  and are unreachable.

Been waiting for the 2.6.20-15 update all day, hoping that would fix
this problem; it does not - same errors.

This has been very confusing as I've combed through the forums and
- launchpad bug reports looking for these specific issues, and I've many
- found similar or related bugs (usually related to SATA drives, however,
+ launchpad bug reports looking for these specific issues, and I've found
+ many similar or related bugs (usually related to SATA drives, however,
or external drives, etc - I have good old ide) but little help. Don't
know if I should start a new bug on launchpad or keep monitoring the
ones I already am, waiting for fixes...

Any advice, or similar experiences to convince me this is more
  widespread, would be much appreciated.

[Bug 106418] Re: 2.6.20-15 still won't boot

2007-04-14 Thread Matthijs
It stops at the line:
[ 31.119166] sr 4:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 5

Or do you need more information? When you explain how I'll provide you
with it (I'm just a translator...)

Remove the "quiet splash" options from the kernel command line, and
transcribe the error messages, please.

Won't boot on an 875P-based motherboard with a Nvidia graphicsboard.
Using the older 2.6.17-kernel works.

[Bug 106418] Re: 2.6.20-15 still won't boot

2007-04-14 Thread Richard Renard
Ok, it seems that upgrading from 2.6.20-15.24 (or 14 as in dpkg.log) to
2.6.20-15.25 did the job, it works now

[Bug 106418] Re: 2.6.20-15 still won't boot

2007-04-14 Thread Richard Renard
I have the problem: 2.6.20-(14|15) do not boot.
My hard drive is a SATA one so devices are already sdx.
2.6.20-13 boots fine.

all i can see is that the computer freezes while setting up sata stuff
(at the kernel level, removed quiet and splash in grub cli), it's at
approx. 3 secs after grub.

Is there any options that i can give to the kernel to get more infos ?
debug or something ?

btw, I tried the "libata.ignore_hpa=0" and it did not work.

Can you try booting with "libata.ignore_hpa=0" on the kernel command
line? If this works, please post a full dmesg.

2007-04-13 Thread Olek Wojnar
I have had this problem since the dist-upgrade I ran last night. I'm
logged in on an older liveCD now. My computer will not boot at all!
Anyone know what is causing this or when it might be fixed??
