Public bug reported: What follows are my recollection of events resulting in my Samsung 900x4C no longer POSTing after updates.
I was running an outdated Quantal install (of a few weeks old) and recently applied Quantal updates to bring my laptop up to date. One of the updates included the linux-image-3.5.0-17 kernel. After updating and rebooting my laptop would kernel panic shortly after the grub menu displayed. I attempted to use any of the previous kernels listed and similar kernel panics occurred. I managed to boot into a USB installation environment, mounted my laptop's primary partitions, chrooted in and reinstalled the linux- image-3.5.0-17 kernel package. The laptop would then boot, however I noticed that wifi was not working. I then discovered that the linux- image-extra-3.5.0-17-generic package had been removed taking the wifi drivers along with it. I plugged in a ethernet cable and reinstalled the linux-image-extra-3.5.0-17-generic package. After rebooting to ensure that the wifi drivers would load correctly and that the kernel would no longer panic, I found that the machine would not longer POST at all. Pressing the power button turns on the blue power LED, but nothing further happens. It seems that the laptop has been bricked. I cannot remove the laptop's battery and so I am currently running the laptop without power attached to attempt to run down the battery. I had UEFI enabled in the BIOS and the last kernel which seemed to work for me was linux-image-3.5.0-15 (although I cannot confirm). This seems very similar to Bug:1040557 which also bricked other models of Samsung laptops. For obvious reasons, I cannot reproduce nor provide logs. If there is any additional information I can provide, please let me know? ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1064759 Title: Samsung 900x4C will not POST after applying Quantal updates To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1064759/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
