Tim, evolution and pidgin have not yet been ported to the new messaging menu library. We're tracking the progress in bug #1040259. There's already a patch for pidgin which should be merged soon. I use several applications that integrate with the messages indicator. The messaging indicator was running when I rebooted after install.
