Public bug reported:

Letting the computer sit until it becomes inactive results in a hard
lock or freeze.  The screen is set to turn off, but "suspend when
inactive for" in power settings is set to "Don't suspend."

The key combination to kill X does not work in this state (even though
it is enabled), nor will magic SysRq combinations.  It is also not
possible to ssh into the box over wireless, although I have not tried a
direct ethernet cable connection.

This is completely reproducible with the current version of the kernel

but did not occur with the previous version (3.2.0-31).
