[Bug 1068654] Re: Computer fan always on since upgrade to 12.10
Confirmed : graphic card problem. I followed the instructions of this page : http://www.ubuntuvibes.com/2012/10/how-to-install-amd-catalyst-legacy.html So now I have ubuntu 12.10, kernel 3.5, Xorg 1.12 and fglrx. And the fan is finally less noisy ! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1068654 Title: Computer fan always on since upgrade to 12.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1068654/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1068654] Re: Computer fan always on since upgrade to 12.10
hardware problem or graphic card driver problem ? Will "Precise live usb" use fglrx ? (in order to check is the fan problem comes from the graphic card driver) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1068654 Title: Computer fan always on since upgrade to 12.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1068654/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1068654] Re: Computer fan always on since upgrade to 12.10
Same behavior between 3.7.0-030700rc1 (upstream), 3.5.0-17 (Quantal) and 3.2.0-32 (Precise) : computer is silent, and then the fan goes strongly, and then silence, and fan ... an so on. Like if there was no intermediate fan speed. Even in the login page without doing anything. I am thinking about reinstalling Precise, but I begin to wonder if my hardware has a problem or not. If I boot from Precise live usb and I see I don't have this fan problem, will it mean that I will not have the fan problem with Precise installed ?

[Bug 1068654] Re: Computer fan always on since upgrade to 12.10
I had to uninstall fglrx because of a "running in low graphics mode" problem (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1068644). Can it be linked with the fan problem ?
[Bug 1068654] Re: Computer fan always on since upgrade to 12.10
Done. I have the same behavior between 3.7.0-030700rc1 and 3.5.0-17 : - I open a session I open a terminal and do 'uname -r' to verify which kernel I am using and I wait - the fan makes some noise - and the stops after 1 or 2 minutes - total silence during some 30secs - and the the fan comes back harder and never calms down ** Description changed: I just upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 and now my laptop fan is always on, even when my CPU usage is less than 5%. Before I upgraded, when I was not using a lot of CPU, my laptop was completely silent. [Bug 1068654] Re: Computer fan always on since upgrade to 12.10
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs- upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed". Thanks in advance.
