I have been using Jaunty since it's release and it did not happened again so i think it's fixed. I just reproduced something like this (April 18, 3:00AM UTC). My screen went darker, and I entered in my password (after running update-manager). After successfully entering my password, the screen stayed dark except for the update manager and an applet or two. The Applications/Places/System and the quick launch icons on the panel were not responsive, but double-clicking on the folders/icons on the desktop worked fine. I did Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to see if it would come back, but when I logged back in, the panel was completely gone. I had to reboot to get it to come back. I can confirm this one too. It happens with compiz-fusion (from Trevino's GIT Repo) on a fresh Feisty with 2.6.20-16 kernel. I have a nvidia 7600 graphics card with the nvidia-glx-new drivers loaded, Version: 1.0.9755+2.6.20.5-16.29 The whole desktop freezes when I try to run sth with gksudo, gconf- editor for example. However, it doesn't happen with all programs. Unfortunately I am not able to use my keyboard anymore when this happens, but the mouse can be moved... the only option is to reboot or ssh from another machine and do a gdm restart. When using Metacity everything works fine. I am having the same issue, but it doesn't matter how long I'm logged in. In order to get x up and running again, I have to restart gdm, but it doesn't always work.
