[Bug 1072082] Re: 046d:c52b Problems using Logitech Unifying Receiver
Christopher M. Penalver, here are the results of the test of the 3.0.0-custom2+ kernel, over 20 trials: Pass 3; Fail 17 This looks very similar to the result for the Raring 3.8.0-rc6 kernel. It is not clear if there is a statistically significant difference from using the current Precise 3.2.0-37 kernel; although my test reported above noted Pass/Fail of 0/10 I have seen _occasionally_ using the 3.2.0-37 kernel that it can boot with the Logitech receiver operational, without the 'mousefix'; this does appear to be very rare, and getting accurate statistics rather than anecdotal evidence would be very tedious. I estimate each test run would require at least 50 reboots. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1072082 Title: 046d:c52b Problems using Logitech Unifying Receiver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1072082/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

NB 2) Although I used the amd64 deb files, when I checked what was installed, the upstream kernel was marked as '32-bit'. [Bug 1072082] Re: 046d:c52b Problems using Logitech Unifying Receiver
Christopher M. Penalver, I tested the upstream kernel 3.4.0-030400rc6 using the same procedure as with the custom kernel. The test failed 10/10 times. NB in order to install the upstream kernel I had to remove the custom AMD graphics drivers and Broadcom wireless drivers I had been using, also non-standard VirtualBox packages (v4.2.6 from the ricotz1 ppa). I have no reason to believe this would have changed the outcome, in particular since the behavior of the 3.2.0.37 kernel w.r.t. the Logitech receiver was identical without the custom drivers and packages.

[Bug 1072082] Re: 046d:c52b Problems using Logitech Unifying Receiver
Robert John Bowles, thank you for testing the requested kernel. It reverted commit 534a7b8e10ec55d9f521e68c20dbb3634c25b98a. Before we continue regression commit bisecting, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. [Bug 1072082] Re: 046d:c52b Problems using Logitech Unifying Receiver
Christopher M. Penalver, no improvement over the A07 BIOS. After reading the upgrade notes it did not seem that any of the changes to the BIOS were targeted at improving USB3 performance, so this is not too surprising. To summarise, using the A05 BIOS the Logitech receiver does not work at all unless I implement the 'mousefix'. Using the A07 BIOS the receiver works intermittently on first boot, but often successfully boots after a small number of replugs. Using the A09 BIOS (as I have done for a few weeks) has not made any noticeable difference over and above the A07 BIOS performance w.r.t. [Bug 1072082] Re: 046d:c52b Problems using Logitech Unifying Receiver
Christopher M. Penalver: I have managed to run the BIOS upgrade. It does seem to have made a significant difference, but it still falls short of ideal behaviour. The original behaviour with the A05 BIOS was that, without the 'mousefix' installed in crontab or /etc/rc.local, the Logitech Unifying Receiver was detected, but inoperative. This was not changed by re- plugging the device any number of times. After the BIOS upgrade to A07, the device can be enabled after a small number of re-plug cycles. On 5 test boot-ups, the receiver started working after a range of 0-3 replugs, with a mode of 1 (on one boot no replug was needed, on another 3 were required). After re-installing the 'mousefix' the reboot behaviour seemed to be somewhat improved over 5 trials, in that all 5 times the mouse and keyboard worked after just 1 re-plug cycle of the receiver. I would need to do a lot more power cycle trials to see if this was significant. FYI I eventually got the Dell BIOS upgrade to run using a Windows 7 System Repair Disk. With the .exe installed on a separate USB, all I needed to do was get to the command prompt from the repair disk boot and navigate to the correct drive letter. This does not seem to be documented anywhere, in particular with regard to Ubuntu, so I will put this info up on one of the Ubuntu forums.
[Bug 1072082] Re: 046d:c52b Problems using Logitech Unifying Receiver
Christopher M. Penalver I have tried a few more ways to execute the BIOS upgrade file I downloaded from Dell. None of them worked, but I am documenting them here for the record. Thinking that FreeDOS was the problem, I tried making an XP MS-DOS bootable USB. This failed in exactly the same way, with the 'Test.' message. This seems to indicate that at least FreeDOS is not the issue here. I then made a Windows 7 bootable image on USB, and added the executable to the root directory. I used [this link](http://www.intowindows.com /bootable-usb/) to make the bootable media. Booting the USB and selecting X64 Recovery Mode I navigated Install Windows->Repair->Use Recovery Tools->Command Prompt. At the prompt I found the USB media as disk C: and again attempted to run the BIOS upgrade .exe. It failed, but this time the message was different: 'The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present.' When I can work out what that means I will be a step nearer to running the upgrade...
[Bug 1072082] Re: 046d:c52b Problems using Logitech Unifying Receiver
Christopher M. Penalver, this is an update on the BIOS issue. Unfortunately, it is bad news. I was contacted yesterday by email from Dell support to phone them, which I did this morning. I spent 2 hours on the phone describing the issue and the problems regarding flashing the new BIOS. Basically the situation is that Ubuntu (and all other Linux distros?) have no official support from Dell. I have asked that the issue be escalated to someone in Dell who can make a response, but I am not holding my breath. I confirm what I wrote earlier, none of the methods involving FreeDOS (bootable USB, CD-ROM, or mount from Grub) enable the executable to be successfully booted to the menu. In addition, none of the methods involving Dell Linux tools appear to be current, either because the software scripts have been obsoleted, or because the repositories for the BIOS upgrades have not been maintained for an extended period of time (at least 18 months). At the present time, it is therefore not possible for me to upgrade my BIOS by any of the published methods, because I do not have a Windows partition on my hard drive, and I do not have a copy of Windows that I can install. There is no currently-published method of doing this from Linux that will work for my computer. If you (or anyone else reading this) has any suggestions I will be pleased to hear them. I am considering options other than FreeDOS for making a bootable USB/CD image, but this will have to be done on a borrowed Windows machine.
[Bug 1072082] Re: 046d:c52b Problems using Logitech Unifying Receiver
I have now tried all the different methods I could find to upgrade the BIOS, including making a .img file and booting to it from grub. In the cases that work at all, I get the message at the DOS prompt 'Test.' It appears that the .exe file has been nerfed so it will only work 'properly' under Windows (as opposed to FreeDOS), unless there are some other command parameters to enter when executing the file.
[Bug 1072082] Re: 046d:c52b Problems using Logitech Unifying Receiver
Christopher M. Panalver, the short answer is 'no'. The article appears to be out of date, the publication was in 2009, and it refers to pages that were last active in 2008 or before. The links to Dell sites express plans and aspirations that do not appear to have been implemented. So far I have tried two other approaches, both using FreeDOS, one from USB (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1901977), another from a CD (http://madphilosopher.ca/2010/04/dell-laptop-bios-update-using- freedos-and-iso-master/). Neither of them work. The USB method gets as far as running the downloaded .exe file, but all that does is print a brief message saying 'Test.' to the console. I am wondering if there are some command line arguments I don't know about. The CD method does not get as far as a DOS prompt. It boots into FDISK whatever menu options I choose, and at that point I bail out rather than lose my hard drive. There is supposed to be a LiveCD option on the menu, but this does not seem to be present. Having followed the instructions assiduously, I am not sure what I might be doing wrong. I have found some other recipes on the web, but they all look more complicated. I am proceeding cautiously because I do not want to turn my laptop into a desk ornament. If I find one that works I will let you know in this thread.
