[Bug 107317] Re: nm-applet doesn't show wired connection and connects only to wireless

2007-10-12 Thread wolfjb
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 105964 ***

Also corroborating on this bug. Wireless seems to work okay, but takes
quite a bit of time to actually connect. The 'circling arrows with green
lights' never happens anymore (don't know if they were removed or
something), so it's difficult to tell if it is actually trying to
connect or not. WEP/WPA seem to work fine, haven't tested open network.
Wired never shows up. Sometimes it will hang the machine when I attach
the network cable to the computer with my only option being to press the
power button until the computer shuts off. This happens approximately
40% of the time, but I haven't noticed any particular pattern. I have
noticed that if I have the cable plugged in when I'm attempting to boot
(ie before I turn on the computer) it happens more reliably. There have
also been times I could log in, but once I was logged in the keyboard
was locked up and I could only mouse around. Trying to logoff with the
mouse seemed to work but would hang when NetworkManager was being shut
down. I have also tried to use the manual configuration which will
sometimes at least tell me I'm usinga manual configuration, but never
any more information than that. The connection information only shows
the wireless information (driver, ip addresses - or lack of them, etc) .
I'm including lspci output and a grep of syslog for NetworkManager
(since it seemed to be appropriate - but maybe not). Hope this helps.

version 0.6.5 from package network-manager-gnome version 0.6.5-0ubuntu10

I'd like to corroborate this bug. It manifests itself on my setup (Gutsy
current) which is a Thinkpad T61p laptop with the following network
devices :

1. Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection
(rev 03)
2. Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN Network
Connection (rev 61)

While the ethernet controller has been detected by the system and the e1000
module loaded, even though ifconfig acknowledges the presence of the
controller, nm-applet doesn't show it.
On the other hand, nm-applet seems to work well with the wireless network
controller - all wireless networks are shown and events in that respect occur
just fine.

Toggling the nm-applet 'Enable Networking', 'Enable wireless' options
doesn't help - I vaguely recall that in previous versions, if eth0
wasn't detected, it was possible to toggle these switches and magically
nm-applet would work fine therafter.

I am also seeing this problem with network-manager 0.6.5-0ubuntu13 on
gutsy.

When at the office, I have both wired LAN (tg3 driver) and wifi
(ipw3945) both with DHCP. The wifi signal is encrypted with WPA and NM
has the passphrase in the keychain.

Behaviour I am seeing:
 - Looking at ifconfig output, I can see NetworkManager connects eth0 (wired
LAN) first, and a few seconds later eth1 is also connected
 - nm-applet icon shows the wifi strength
 - nm-applet does not list "wired network"
 - if I disable the wifi, nm-applet claims "no network" even though ifconfig
can see eth0 working correctly, and the network works ok

With an earlier gutsy,
 - it would only attempt to connect to the wifi signal if I unplugged the wired
LAN.
 - if I disabled wifi, it would say "wired network"

Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network
Connection (rev 05)

There is another bug on this. I'll dupe this bug to that one and then
you will get information on both.

network manager applet doesn't discover and doesn't connect to wired
interfaces. but it connects to wireles without a problem.

- version is 0.6.4-6ubuntu7
+ version is 0.6.4-6ubuntu7 - earlier everything worked fine (i think the
problem started with 0.6.4-6ubuntu6 or 5)
