This seems to be indeed caused by the Light variant, but the list of
font styles (Light, Light italic, normal, italic, bold, bold italic)
is not accessible (grayed out) for all fonts in the Kate schema editor.

Confirmed for DejaVu Sans. I've not noticed it before, because DejaVu
Sans Mono looks fine.

The same bug is present in Kubuntu 7.10. The display is still distroted
if I use DefaVu Sans fonts: extra whitespace here and there, the
cursor is not displayed in the correct location, etc.
