[Bug 107937] Re: Laptop is hotter with Feisty installed
I also have a HP nc8430 T7200 running uncomfortably hot. I'm on Hardy Beta 64-bit, all updates to date installed. I also dual-boot with WinXP, there, the temps and battery life are much better. I would like to change to Linux completely, but on laptops there still is some streamlining left to do. Heat/power consumption is clearly one of the major problems. Otherwise, Hardy is VERY close to being a viable option for general use by an average user. $ uname -a Linux Possulap 2.6.24-12-generic #1 SMP Wed Mar 12 22:31:43 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/* setting not supported polling disabled state: active[2] temperature: 65 C critical (S5): 256 C active[0]: 83 C: devices=C32A active[1]: 72 C: devices=C32B active[2]: 50 C: devices=C32C active[3]: 45 C: devices=C32D setting not supported polling disabled state: ok temperature: 61 C critical (S5): 105 C passive: 102 C: tc1=1 tc2=2 tsp=300 devices=CPU0 CPU1 setting not supported polling disabled state: active[2] temperature: 74 C critical (S5): 110 C active[0]: 105 C: devices=C330 active[1]: 95 C: devices=C32E active[2]: 65 C: devices=C32F setting not supported polling disabled state: ok temperature: 49 C critical (S5): 80 C setting not supported polling disabled state: ok temperature: 41 C critical (S5): 105 C passive: 60 C: tc1=1 tc2=2 tsp=300 devices=CPU0 CPU1 setting not supported polling disabled state: ok temperature: 80 C critical (S5): 110 C $ cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 15 model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz stepping: 6 cpu MHz : 1000.000 cache size : 4096 KB physical id : 0 siblings: 2 core id : 0 cpu cores : 2 fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 10 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe syscall nx lm constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts rep_good pni monitor ds_cpl vmx est tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr lahf_lm bogomips: 3994.35 clflush size: 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 36 bits physical, 48 bits virtual power management: processor : 1 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 15 model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz stepping: 6 cpu MHz : 1000.000 cache size : 4096 KB physical id : 0 siblings: 2 core id : 1 cpu cores : 2 fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 10 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe syscall nx lm constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts rep_good pni monitor ds_cpl vmx est tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr lahf_lm bogomips: 3990.04 clflush size: 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 36 bits physical, 48 bits virtual power management: $ -- Laptop is hotter with Feisty installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107937 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'm running Hardy for a while now and I can confirm that my laptop is still considerably hotter when I'm running Ubuntu than when I'm running Windows XP. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed release. My battery life too has been fairly reduced. I just updated to 7.10 beta last night and I'm also having issues with the DVD drive constantly clicking when the tray is shut. Are the battery and / or heat issues linked to the fact that ATI support is shoddy at best? -- Laptop is hotter with Feisty installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107937 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yes. me too ! I thought it was only an impression but it may be real. I think I lost one third of my laptop autonomy recently : 3 hours before, 2 now. To be sure i will test the autonomy with Edgy liveCD and Feisty. If confirmed, it would be a HUGE regression.
