I can watch video fine as well. I use the GeForce 6200 Nvidia card on two Ubuntu computers (12.10 and 11.10). I use the nvidia-current driver. Seems to run fine on both machines for viewing HDTV. What I wanted to add is that this bug appeared for me for the first time in driver version 295.40. I think this has something to do with the security fix that was applied. A workaround on my system is to install the driver version 173 (but this is not possible on 12.10).
