There wasn't actually an *error*. E4defrag doesn't need root prives to find and print statistics. It doesn't deliberately because the people who wrote the program decided this was the right thing to do. So it's not actually hiding the error, it's just doing something weird/stupid. Which you could argue is a bug, but if so, it's more of a design issue. Instead, e4defrag suppresses the error and returns an exit status of 0, unlike fsck, as illustrated above.
