Any news on this one? This patch has not been added to trusty so using plymouth on a secured stick would still result in a black screen during startup. I would like to see this patch added to trusty plymouth. Hi Chris, well we want it to be available in precise lts but then in the hardware enablement kernels (quantal,raring,saucy). Hi Chris, So i have now modified initrd and added a quirk for the iMac12,1. after export BOOT in init i added the following line to make sure the radeon driver gets loaded first. ### export BOOT #adding quirk for imac 12,1 for plymouth only using fb0 so the radeon driver needs to get loaded first. [ $(dmesg|grep 'iMac12,1') ] modprobe radeon # Don't do log messages here to avoid confusing graphical boots ### And now it works ok. Plymouth is just selecting the first drm device it can find. Without the quirk fbcon nows that fb1 is the primary device so it is just plymouth. Could plymouth be fixed to make a decission based on the output from fbcon? Hi Chris, i need vacation :) I have been testing almost the whole day but i cannot seem to get it to work as it should. Because of the hybrid graphics the intel device i915 driver gets initialized first and is the fb0 device. When plymouth starts it tries to open the fb0 device and loads the i915 driver. I then have to exit plymouth using escape to get the console where i have to enter the password for the encrypted disk. The thing is that it is not consistently because i also have a few times (less then i915 as first) during startup the radeon driver wins and gets fb0 and then my plymouth works perfectly. When starting the system with i915.disable=1 plymouth always works. So do you have other ideas howto fix this? Hello Chris, so the latest kernel which is now in stable contains the patches and it does not crash the kernel anymore but i still have issues with a black screen when plymouth is starting. Hi Chris, i have tested the kernel but no success, i have tested the patch on the latest quantal git kernel 3.5.0.33 could you provide a kernel with this patch based on current git to see if it works there are some other radeon fixes on the new git but i'm not so sure now! For precise i have to use the quantal kernel for efi support on cross efi usage. So I'm a bit confused. The link here: http://people.canonical.com/~arges/lp1107642.3/ is a kernel build from the 3.5.0-33 git sources + the backported d1f9809ed1315c4cdc5760cf2f59626fd3276952 commit. Which is what you were indicating, can you ensure you tested with the above kernel and it booted properly into the right kernel? Perhaps check uname -a to see if the string matches. @Chris, Yes i have seen the update and also tested it. Some strange timing issues with plymouth now but i will look into that, but no crash. But why was the patch not in kernel 3.5.0-30.51 while it was in the kernel release before? I in the commit log that the deltas were reapplied from to kernel versions before, was it forgotten because of the hurry for the cve? There is also another i915 module in the kernel tree which adds support for hasswell chips (ubuntu/i915 which produces i915_hsw.ko module). This module does contain the above patch but i assume the default module should be used? @William I've just done the same thing via the git tree, and also using apt-get source. The line in question looks like this: first_pd_entry_in_global_pt = dev_priv-mm.gtt-gtt_total_entries - I915_PPGTT_PD_ENTRIES; Which means that patch was applied. I have then removed plymouth from the 32bit initrd (just removed the scripts) and my console started to work. Hi Chris, i have been retesting some thing as i could not see any difference with https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1107642/comments/22 so after digging into my test stick i saw that that post was with testing the kernels on raring instead of quantal. So i have done some digging as why i got loading driver null and it seems that my initrd was built without plymouth/framebuffer. Starting the quantal system with an initrd made from raring (only changing the root parameter) everything worked as expected. So now i have retested the kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1107642/comments/34 and it boots correctly without issues. This only works when building the initrd with FRAMEBUFFER=y in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash Sorry for my mistake, but it seems that adding 9a0f938bde7 to a default quantal kernel fixes the crash regarding i915 ppgtt. The issue has indeed been resolved except that the i915 driver crashes on kernel startup. this has been resolved in commit: 9a0f938bde74bf9e50bd75c8de9e38c1787398cd If this could be added to the quantal kernel then the imac 12,1 works as expected on a 32bit kernel on quantal. The only weird thing is that plymouth says it will load the i915 driver which i think is not the right one because the monitor is attached to the amd graphics adapter. if i disable the i915 driver it says loading radeon and also completes without issues. I have also started the 64bit kernel with the option i915.disable=1 and then i still get a console while the plymouth log says loading radeon driver.
