[Bug 110995] Re: Hard drive noise with applications

2008-08-21 Thread simon
I have to same problem on my Dell Vostro 1500 with a FUJITSU harddisk.
I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.1 Hardy Heron. I also tried to make the harddisk
less noisy with hdparm -M 128 but it doesn't work. :-(

[Bug 110995] Re: Hard drive noise with applications

2007-10-27 Thread Lorenzo Castellana
Hi Brian. I've installed Gutsy Gibbon and I'm using it. The problem is
still present. When Ubuntu starts ,or when I launch an application like
Firefox or OpenOffice, the hard drive start working an clicking pretty
hard. As always, under Vista the hard disk is very silent instead.

There's also the other problem. Sometimes (it happens apparently without
any motivation) the hdd starts making a "click" every 4 seconds, even if
I'm not using the notebook. It seems me that it happens not because the
HDD is working, but because the arm of the read-and-write head doesn't
go in the correct position.

I've heard that many other people with a notebook and a SATA HDD have
this problem too, especially the second one.

If you need other informations, please ask me. If you think that it
could be useful, I can make an audio registration of the hard disk drive
under windows and under Ubuntu. Thank you very much.

[Bug 110995] Re: Hard drive noise with applications

2007-08-28 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is
being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can
learn more about the stable release update process at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test
with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy
Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on
getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about
the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment
on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate
your help.

[Bug 110995] Re: Hard drive noise with applications

2007-06-01 Thread Brian Murray
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description doesn't yet
have enough information.
Please include as attachments the following additional information, if you have
not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as
required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command 'uname -a' in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command 'dmesg > dmesg.log' and attach the resulting file
'dmesg.log' to this bug report.
3. Please run the command 'sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log' and attach the
resulting file 'lspci-vvnn.log' to this bug report.
For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug
reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks
in advance!

By doing

sudo laptop_mode start

I can at least reduce the clicking frequency from previously 5 seconds,
which was extremely annoying, to now may be once per minute or even
less. This shows that it *can* be influenced.

[Bug 110995] Re: Hard drive noise with applications

2007-04-29 Thread RuiP
I have an identical issue, but in my case it only happens on my SATA drives (it
happened with 2 different drives from different makers).
The most strange thing is that it seems that only happens when i start apps,
not when i read/write data files.

I finally move all Linux installations to my old ATA drives and /home/* and
others file storages to SATA, a scheme that reduced a lot the noise.
btw, not a clicking, but a loud trrrt-trrrt-trrrt continuously, that not
happens with much older and cheaper drives.
