Removing the battery didn't have an effect. But why should I shut off the computer? Yes, but things are not always as they should be. In this case I suspect your bios has a bug that causes grub to think you hit a key when resuming from hibernation. Err, this is a laptop right? I don't suppose you can remove the battery?
