[Bug 112102] Re: Too easy to accidentally kill dbus from Services settings and lock yourself out of services

2009-02-16 Thread Stephen Doody
Unfortunately the fix mentioned does not always work, at least on 8.04

I tried to apply the fix: run "sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart" then re-
run services-admin and re-enable dbus

on running gksudo services-admin I get
** (services-admin:6299) CRITICAL **: The permission of the setuid helper is
not correct
And... once again teh fatal.. the configuration could not be loaded.

Once dbus is stopped, for whatever reason, the network and other items
needed to upgrade or get repairs become innaccessible/unusable.
Essentially, stopping this servcie is immediately unrecoverable and will
force me to apply a complete re-installation of Ubuntu. Why not just
mark it with "Click here to waste three hours hunting obscure
configuration defects and then enjoy a full re-install, kiss your data
goodbye"

I have tried to follow the debate and direction being attempted here and
frankly it seems like a poorly thought out hack being forced in during
migration to 8.10. At the very least stopping dbus should come with a warning
that the user will probably have to perform a re-install to get a usable system
again.
This is extremely poor design and needs a decent fix asap... I love where
Ubuntu is going, but this kind of "screw the user mantrap" really sucks.

2009-05-13 Thread Guy Spillman
I have too discovered this problem on both 8.10 & 9.04. I have not
found a fix for 8.10. I was able to fix 9.04 using the following
procedure:

1. Press the 'ESC' key during GRUB at start up.
2. Choose the "Recovery Mode" kernel option for your version of Ubuntu
3. When the "Recovery Menu" is displayed, choose "Drop to root shell prompt"
4. Type the following commands into the shell:
 ln -s /etc/init.d/dbus /etc/rc2.d/S12dbus
 exit
5. When the "Recovery Menu" is redisplayed, choose "Resume normal boot"

I think the reason that this is being ignored is that this thread is a
link to Gnome's Bugzilla service. That link seems to be malfunctioning.
I have manually entered a comment on that service. Hopefully, we will
get something done about this now.

Oh yes, I forgot to add my $0.02
Critical system services should have a warning popup in this case.

>This service should not be available to the average user

I agree, But I'm not average, and need I the access.
There needs to be a global setting for "Expert, Power User, Novice" user
interface levels, like Xine had.
Ubuntu is in danger of getting too dumbed down already.
I've burned a couple of hundred man hours since installing "Jaunty" tracking
down and working around
the various and sundry "safety" and "security" features, in order to get my
development work done.

Please do not install more default "naderers", without identifying them
and providing an off switch.

Fix as reached Jaunty for some time.

I don't understand the ever-lasting debate here guys. If you're brave
(or dumb) enough to says yes to the warning dialog, then you can't
complain that your system broke. I could possibly make that warning even
more frightening,t hough, and I will consider that.

I had this problem too, but logging out and then back in again solved

Followup: there's a lot of messages in various forums that look like the
same general problem, with people proposing solutions like reinstalling
various sets of packages.

In the interest of getting someone something up for people searching for
the same problem... the workaround is to run "sudo /etc/init.d/dbus
restart" then re-run services-admin and re-enable dbus.

that the user will probably have to perform a re-install to get a usable system
again.
This is extremely poor design and needs a decent fix asap... I love where
Ubuntu is going, but this kind of "screw the user mantrap" really sucks.

2009-04-03 Thread JoaoH
I just killed a perfectly good Ubuntu 9.04 by unchecking the Service
DBUS by accident...had to do a complete reinstall. This service should
not be available to the average user.

Steve

I had this problem too, but logging out and then back in again solved
it: the Unlock button became re-enabled in services-admin, and I was
able to re-check dbus after unlocking the dialog.

[Bug 112102] Re: Too easy to accidentally kill dbus from Services settings and lock yourself out of services

Steve

In the interest of getting someone something up for people searching for

I had this problem too, but logging out and then back in again solved
it: the Unlock button became re-enabled in services-admin, and I was
able to re-check dbus after unlocking the dialog.

[Bug 112102] Re: Too easy to accidentally kill dbus from Services settings and lock yourself out of services

Steve

[Bug 112102] Re: Too easy to accidentally kill dbus from Services settings and lock yourself out of services

2009-04-03 Thread JoaoH
I just killed a perfectly good Ubuntu 9.04 by unchecking the Service
DBUS by accident...had to do a complete reinstall. This service should
not be available to the average user.

Why can't you boot from any Linux CD,
 mount the affected file system,
and fix the rc.d links from there ?
Just asking
