*What you wrote was not that it was incomplete, but just that there was no further activity:* Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete *In fact I had nothing to add. Actually after explaining how to reproduce it, I expected that someone worked on it, as I am not able to do it on my own. Recently I have not observed the problem any more, mainly because I used .m files very seldom. But equally I didn't see big changes in the thread. Can you explain what you were waiting for? [Bug 112228] Re: Nautilus gives incorrect warning when opening files of .m extension
Why changing the default app for the text/x-matlab type, which ordinarily carry the .m extension, puts the system in such a situation that it can no longer deal with it? After the change, what is now causing the conflict between the text/x-matlab mimetype and its standard .m extension? Did Nautilus forget to write down in some xml file that the .m extension is still compatible with text/x-matlab? Where/how should it have been written? What extension(s) is Nautilus thinking that such a type should have, at that point? Can the Nautilus way of applying the default app setting be corrected so that Nautilus doesn't think that .m is incompatible with text/x-matlab afterwards? If the system does not allow different mimetypes with the same extension be opened with different default applications, what is the advantage of finely recognizing the mimetype? Couldn't it be enough using the extension only? [Bug 112228] Re: Nautilus gives incorrect warning when opening files of .m extension
Confirmed, the bug is slightly tricky. Nautilus display a warning when the filename and detected type don't match and they are not opened by the same application. Changing the matlab default creates a dismatch between text/x-objcsrc which still use gedit and text/x-matlab. A workaround would be to add text/x-objcsrc to the gvim.desktop MimeType ** Changed in: shared-mime-info (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- Nautilus gives incorrect warning when opening files of .m extension https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112228 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 112228] Re: Nautilus gives incorrect warning when opening files of .m extension
Here are the steps you asked for: 0. write a simple M file like the following test.m ___ function p=prova(q) p=q; endfunction ___ 1. double click on it, gedit should regularly open it. (-- this is very important). Then close gedit. 2. from nautilus, right click on the same file, then Properties/OpenWith/Add/use a custom command, and simply type vim (vi improved editor). Confirm by clicking on Add to save changes and then leave the Properties dialog by clicking on [close]. 3. Now double click on the file again. You expect that nautilus launches vim this time. If your system behaves like mine, you will get the stupid warning. 4. If you cancel back the settings that you have modified from the Propertied dialog, everything works well back again. My questions: - why does Nautilus trigger the famous warning for Vim and not for gedit? The file name and content did not change at all! - what is special in gedit, that makes Nautilus not complain, and what is wrong with Vim? (try setting any other editor than Vim as a default, and you will always get the stupid warning; originally I found the problem after installing SciTe) My impression is that the problem is in that something that Nautilus does or modifies(it creates .xml files, isn't it?) in order to set a new application as a default, and this something is not operating well especially when the implied extension (.m in our case) corresponds to many different mime types (Objective C and Matlab/Octave txt files). Probably these .xml files (or whatever) are written in such a way that they only work if the file content is of one, preferred, mime type. I have the impression that in the .m case the favourite mime type could be the Obejective-C one, but I could not test this because I don't know how to write a single line of that language (sorry). Hope this helps to go further, and thank you all very much. Lurix. Could you describe easy steps to trigger the bug. You might want to unset the gconf key /apps/nautilus/preferences/display_mimetype_warning as a workaround -- Nautilus gives incorrect warning when opening files of .m extension https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112228 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 112228] Re: Nautilus gives incorrect warning when opening files of .m extension
This bug is really a pain in the neck. It's years that it disturbs my Matlab/Octave programming, and I am considering to switch back to KDE. I can add one bit of information (valid on recent ubuntu releases, up to 7.04). 1) After a fresh GNU-Linux installation, Nautilus correctly opened xxx.m files with gedit, without complaining. After I played around with Open With feature (I wanted to make Scite the default application for such files) Nautilus started showing that useless warning message. 2) In other cases it seemed me that the warning message appeared always, except when the default application was gedit. I mean, if, after situation (1) above I select gedit as the default application, it works with no warnings I think that these behaviours should be verified and hopefully they'll say something to whom knows how nautilus writes those .xml files or mime databases. I think that the bug may not be in the way nautilus behaves afetr reading them. But rather it could be in the way it writes them when some Open with option is changed. And then if they are incorrectly written, Nautilus gets confused (foe example, it does no more understand that a Matlab/Octave content can stay in a *.m file as well as an Objective-C content) and fails to interpret them. Otherwise, why should the problem vanish after editing those .xml files and/or updating mime databases? (As reported by others) Thank to whom will permamently solve this. Is this a duplicate of bug 19101? It seems to be at least a specific case/example for bug 112230, which has been marked as dup for bug 19101. ** Tags added: likely-dup -- Nautilus gives incorrect warning when opening files of .m extension https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112228 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
