[Bug 113201] Re: firefox spends lots of time hung

2009-12-13 Thread Sergey Fukanchik
This bug affects me too. It usually appears on slow connections like
GPRS or on connections which have some problems with DNS. Also
it appears almost on all connections if i install dnsmasq. But i never
seen it on Ethernet connections.

When firefox hangs it consumes 100% of CPU.

This bug appears when i open new tab, close old, or just switching tabs.
Usually clicking on the links doesn't affect it.

Running firefox -g and beraking during the hang reveals nothing.
It usually breaks in different places but often i see js_Invoke.

It is very annoying per se, but the worst thing about it is the short-living
X Server windows which firefox uses alot. Say if i open new tab and
quickly click on menu "File" firefox opens system-modal menu window
and hangs and the entire X server becomes unusable (does not respond to my
actions)
until firefox resumes. I can't switch to another application, the panels do not
respond to my clicks and so on.

The duration of the hang depends on number of open tabs. If i open 50 tabs
it will be about 90 seconds. When i have 10 open tabs it's about 15 seconds.

2008-01-14 Thread Roger Binns
I figure you may as well close this bug. The symptoms persist and
2.0.0.11 was a major downgrade in stability for me. Several times a day
I now have to run `killall firefox-bin` and then start it up again.
However I doubt Ubuntu developers are going to spend any time on this,
and Firefox developers won't care pointing at the imminent 3.0 release
instead.

[Bug 113201] Re: firefox spends lots of time hung

2007-10-22 Thread Roger Binns
I was fortunate enough to be on a tropical island with truly awful
Internet access (some satellite, lots of latency, sharing with skype
users!, periods of several minutes when DNS servers didn't respond at
all according to wireshark) and no proxy server configured. When the
ISP's DNS servers decided not to respond, firefox (gutsy beta as of two
weeks ago) would do this hanging stuff as well.

This implies that there are other places synchronous DNS lookups are
being done which can also hang the interface.

Alternatively maybe it is an extension such as Adblock Plus which I
happen to be running everywhere.

[Bug 113201] Re: firefox spends lots of time hung

2007-10-02 Thread Dave Gilbert
Jeremy on #mozilla suggested I paste this link to a selection of known
'Firefox hangs':

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs#Hang_loading_websites_when_using_an_automatic_proxy_configuration_file

That one points to the PAC problem in particular - but it sounds like that
isn't what you have
if it also happens without a PAC; when you use it without a PAC what do you use
for the rest of
the settings; I just wonder whether you have any IPs in the proxy avoid list (I
don't know if FF does a resolve for those).

[Bug 113201] Re: firefox spends lots of time hung

2007-10-01 Thread Roger Binns
I have had this both with specifying a proxy directly and via a pac. I
use isInNet and and shExpMatch when I use my pacs. I also run my own
dns server so there shouldn't be an issue with resolving names (although
I believe neither of those functions resolve them).

[Bug 113201] Re: firefox spends lots of time hung

2007-10-01 Thread Dave Gilbert
I've also seen this (on Debian Iceweasel) - and hadn't figured out that it was
the proxy; looking through the Mozilla bugzilla there seem to be a lot of
proxy related hangs:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=235853
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=306922
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208287

A lot of them seem to be related to doing a DNS lookup so that the PAC
script can check by IP address rather than name which is very useful.

Do you use a PAC file or specify the proxy directly?

IMHO this is a major problem in office situations.

[Bug 113201] Re: firefox spends lots of time hung

2007-07-01 Thread Roger Binns
Scratch the flash theory - I have found the definitive cause.

It occurs if you are using a proxy server. If the proxy server takes a
long time to respond to a request then firefox completely hangs. For
example right now my ISP is dead (I am using neighbour's wireless to
send this). So my internal proxy server takes several minutes to
respond to a request as it does dns lookups that ultimately fail and
then an error message is returned. The entire firefox interface freezes
while waiting on the proxy.

For example I had about 10 tabs open and killed firefox. I then told it
to restore my session and it took about 5 minutes before the window even
appeared. Each tab was blank and clicking had no effect. It then took
about another 5 minutes before tabs slowly started filling with the
error content from the proxy server. I still couldn't interact with
firefox. I then changed the config to use direct connections and
killed/restarted the browser. Firefox still tried and failed to contact
the sites, but I could at least use the interface and jump amongst the
tabs.

The evidence points to the firefox UI hanging whenever waiting on a
proxy connection.

[Bug 113201] Re: firefox spends lots of time hung

2007-07-01 Thread Roger Binns
The versions are at the top. Ubuntu version is Feisty on AMD64 and
Firefox is whatever is current (2.0.0.4)

The hangs are random and not too frequent so I never know when they are
going to happen and running firefox for days under strace just isn't
feasible.

My current theory is that this is caused by garbage collecting the flash
plugin. I think it happens some time after I have used a page with
flash and then go onto several others. After a certain amount of time
or pages the page that had flash is presumably removed in some way and
closing the flash plugin is what hangs the browser for several seconds.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for
ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers.
You can learn more about finding the right package at

I have classified this bug as a bug in "mozilla-firefox".
