I too think that Ubuntu must provide high quality benchmarking tools without relying _only_ on commercial products running atop Wine. In fact, one of the first things people do when testing a new version of Windows is launching a game and see how smooth it runs. Journalists and gamers even use 3DMark and the likes to capture the smoothness into numbers. I know 3DMark runs well under Wine, but it is DirectX based.
