Posting just in case anyone has the same experience I had I thought the fixed skype wasn't working for me on 13.04 (was continuing to segfault), but then noticed eventually that when my system was upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04, the Partner repository had not been updated to raring, and so it was installing skype for the wrong distro. In particular I had 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 installed and it took me a long time to notice the 12 where there should have been a 13! @gunnarhj: Yes, I also tried it with both libqtwebkit4 2.2.1 and 2.3.0. Whatever was causing the problem, seemed to be from the upgrade of some other package when upgrading to raring. I reverted it back to 2.36.0, and now Skype works again. The issue I was facing was not related to libGL, and I have resolved it for now. I have made Skype start automatically at login via Startup Applications, and my ~/.local/share/applications/skype.desktop (which takes precedence over /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop) would keep calling skype. Ok, Startup Applications isn't exactly a hardly promoted feature nowadays, but I suppose we are a few that somehow have made Skype start at login. Also, people are used to be able to just say skype in a terminal window or in the Alt+F2 command line thing. It's the natural command for starting an application named skype. :) For those reasons I for one think that letting the wrapper keep the name /usr/bin/skype and moving the binary is preferable before renaming the wrapper and editing .desktop. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to qtwebkit-source in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1155327 Title: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304/+bug/1155327/+subscriptions -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

Thanks, Steve. Nice to know that the LD_PRELOAD workaround won't likely cause undesired side effects. [Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()
I've dug into this issue to try to get a better backtrace from the crash. In the process I've determined that this is not a bug in qtwebkit per se. The crash happens before any calls are made into the qtwebkit library - the mere act of loading the nvidia libGL and calling its initializers is enough to trigger the crash. So the only relevant difference between qtwebkit 2.2.1 and 2.3.0 is that 2.3.0 is linked against libGL. It is exceedingly unlikely that anything in skype needs to /use/ the GL- based functionality of QtWebkit. Consequently, the proposed workaround to bypass the nvidia libGL by preloading the mesa libGL should be a safe and effective solution. ** Package changed: qtwebkit-source (Ubuntu Raring) => nvidia-graphics- drivers-304 (Ubuntu Raring) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1155327 Title: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304/+bug/1155327/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()
Marked the #1131636 also as a duplicate of this bug, since this has been correctly targetted against raring already. As I mentioned there, I built a 2.3.1 qtwebkit at ppa:canonical- qt5-edgers/qt5-beta-proper (don't mind the Qt5 packages there and if you use Qt5 also don't start upgrading from there unless you want unfinished packages). However according to other comments 2.3.1 does not have a fix that would fix Skype for NVIDIA users - LD_PRELOAD still needed. It only fixes a bunch of other bugs. So there's still no known fix in qtwebkit, only the known ld_preload workaround in skype. [Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()
The latest comment in bug #1131636 suggests that this qtwebkit regression may have been fixed in the latest 2.3.1 release. Ah, I forgot it was in partner. If this change is going into the skype package, you need someone who can upload to the partner archive... ubuntu-sponsors is irrelevant here (as is the release team, actually, partner archive isn't subject to the release freeze). [Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()
Excellent, Jamie! The workaround patch I propose has all the time been intended as a temporary fix that ought to be reverted as soon as a proper fix - whatever that is - is in place. But the patch needs to be uploaded by someone, and you unsubscribed ubuntu-sponsors the other day. :( Are you ready to upload it now? [Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()
Timo, if it is believed it is a Skype-specific bug and there is a workaround that we can use for skype, then I won't block on a system- wide workaround for skype (please coordinate with the release team though). That said, an upstream bug should be filed with skype and perhaps qtwebkit. I still think this is papering over the issue and that the proper solution is fixing qtwebkit. (Perhaps that could be uploaded as an SRU and the skype workaround removed after release). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to qtwebkit-source in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1155327 Title: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qtwebkit-source/+bug/1155327/+subscriptions -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

I've looked at the libqtwebkit4 rdepends bug reports, and no similar crash reports seem to exist for eg. amarok, arora, k3b, ktorrent, rekonq, quassel. This leads me to currently believe this is a Skype specific bug, in which case the hack/workaround or a fix or rebuild from upstream would be needed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1155327 Title: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qtwebkit-source/+bug/1155327/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
