Try to install latest drivers available from ATI. That solved it for me. A good step-by-step description how to do so is located at ubuntu.com (direct link: http://tinyurl.com/39kpsy). I had the same problems with my PCI-e X600: Starting eg. OO just showed me the splash screen for half a second and then it just closed /wo any error-msg. Now with my 'selfmade' fglrx drivers everything runs just fine.
