gnome-calculator 1:3.10.2-0ubuntu1.1 is in trusty, and I cannot
reproduce the issue there.

The fixed 3.10.x can be found here:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gnome-calculator/

The 3.8.2-1ubuntu4 (saucy default) still contains this bug!! :-(

In the repos there's only a 3.8.2-1ubuntu4, but it's last modified date is in
July, so it cannot be the one with the fix.

I can confirm both the bug and the suggested workarounds. Although the "
in dec" method for converting hex to dec does not work, I've to write
the full syntax (" in decimal"). Hopefully the fixed package will be
available soon (at least for testing).

[Bug 1166654] Re: Calculator does not convert between binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal in Raring 13.04

2013-07-30 Thread Rob Quill
Futher to what Richard said, if you want to convert a number from hex to
decimal and then do some other operations in decimal then you have to do
this:

1. Open calculator
2. Switch to programming mode from the Application menu
3. Switch to Hexadecimal input
4. Enter 80 and press return (the number should become bold)
5. Enter " in decimal" (without the quotes) after the number and press enter
6. The display should show 128₁₀
7. Select the number and Ctrl-C to copy it.
8 Switch the Decimal input (this will clear the number which is why we just
copied it)
9 Ctrl-V to paste the number in
10 Do your ops in decimal.

[Bug 1166654] Re: Calculator does not convert between binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal in Raring 13.04

2013-06-03 Thread Richard Griswold
This really threw me off at first as well, but I found out how to make
it work. To convert between bases, you now have to add one of the
following after the value:

 * Binary: " in bin"
 * Octal: " in oct"
 * Decimal: " in dec"
 * Hex: " in hex"

For example, to convert 80 from hexadecimal to binary:

1. Open calculator
2. Switch to programming mode from the Application menu
3. Switch to Hexadecimal input
4. Enter 80 and press return (the number should become bold)
5. Enter " in bin" (without the quotes) after the number and press enter
6. The display should show 1000₂

I preferred the way it used to work, since it is now much slower and
less intuitive. With the older version, I could enter the number I
wanted to convert, press enter, and use CTRL-[BDOH] to show it in the
new base.

I got this error when I ran it through command line:

(gnome-calculator:4713): Gtk-WARNING **: Invalid text buffer iterator: either
the iterator is uninitialized, or the characters/pixbufs/widgets in the buffer
have been modified since the iterator was created.
You must use marks, character numbers, or line numbers to preserve a position
across buffer modifications.
You can apply tags and insert marks without invalidating your iterators,
but any mutation that affects 'indexable' buffer contents (contents that can be
referred to by character offset)
will invalidate all outstanding iterators

2013-04-14 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.
