[Bug 117578] Re: Filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to iPod
I think this should probably be closed entirely. If someone really wants a new file naming scheme in Rhythmbox, they can reopen. ** Changed in: rhythmbox Status: New => Unknown ** Changed in: rhythmbox Remote watch: GNOME Bug Tracker #442137 => GNOME Bug Tracker #374078 ** Changed in: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Fix Released -- Filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to iPod https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117578 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 117578] Re: Filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to iPod
Downgrading importance as the filename sanitising has already been released. Does anyone think this should be kept open for the "standard" naming issue? This has been captured in the upstream bug report and is a design decision that should not affect Ubuntu users. (close or downgrade further to wishlist?) ** Changed in: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium => Low -- Filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to iPod https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117578 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 117578] Re: Filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to iPod, can result in errors
Apparently a version of Colin's patch was committed in r5751 of rhythmbox SVN on June 15th, so Intrepid should have the sanitization of illegal characters issue fixed at least. ** Summary changed: - Filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to iPod, can result in errors + Filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to iPod ** Description changed: Binary package hint: rhythmbox I was adding a song to my ipod (dragged it from the library) while I noticed that its filename in the ipod does not follow the standard .mp3 but had the name unaltered which is "04-J'ai Dormi Sous L'eau.mp3" - One serious consequence of this is that filenames with invalid - characters for the target filesystem (such as a quote, colon, <, >, to - name a few) are unable to be transferred to the device and result in a - generic rhythmbox error. + One serious consequence of this (now fixed in Intrepid but still + affecting Hardy and earlier) is that filenames with invalid characters + for the target filesystem (such as a quote, colon, <, >, to name a few) + are unable to be transferred to the device and result in a generic + rhythmbox error. -- Filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to iPod https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117578 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 117578] Re: filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to ipod
Yes, this is a nasty one since files with fat32 chars can't be transferred, and rhythmbox just gives a generic error not explaining why. The files must then be manually renamed and transferred again. At the very least rhythmbox should sanitize filenames by removing or replacing such characters, otherwise it can lead to an incredibly confusing and frustrating user experience. Many users with large libraries are bound to have a few of these characters such as a quote or colon. Perhaps this deserves a separate bug specific just to sanitization, as a new naming scheme isn't necessarily required? ** Changed in: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Low => Medium ** Summary changed: - filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to ipod + Filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to iPod, can result in errors ** Description changed: Binary package hint: rhythmbox - I was adding a song to my ipod (dragged it from the library) while I noticed that its filename in the ipod does not follow the standard - .mp3 but had the name unaltered which is "04-J'ai Dormi Sous L'eau.mp3" + I was adding a song to my ipod (dragged it from the library) while I + noticed that its filename in the ipod does not follow the standard + .mp3 but had the name unaltered which is "04-J'ai Dormi Sous + L'eau.mp3" - could this create problems? + One serious consequence of this is that filenames with invalid + characters for the target filesystem (such as a quote, colon, <, >, to + name a few) are unable to be transferred to the device and result in a + generic rhythmbox error. -- Filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to iPod, can result in errors https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117578 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 117578] Re: filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to ipod
At least patching against fat32-forbidden chars would be nice -- see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=374078 and particularly: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=79726 Right now one can't transfer songs whose filename contain ':', for example. gutsy. I don't know if it creates problems, but since *all* music files uploaded with itunes or banshee have this format, I'm wondering if rhythmbox behavior is correct -- filename not changed to the "standard" when adding a song to ipod https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117578 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
