Have upgraded to Gutsy at tribe 4, and the driver seems to have
stabilized my system

Glx framerate with compiz fusion running:

2582 frames in 5.0 seconds = 516.278 FPS

3759 frames in 5.0 seconds = 751.629 FPS
3585 frames in 5.0 seconds = 716.935 FPS

When I tried Forcing the card into AGP 8 mode X crashed upon system
start before the login screen, but after the Ubuntu boot splash screens.

1469 frames in 5.3 seconds = 278.148 FPS
1469 frames in 5.4 seconds = 273.462 FPS
1469 frames in 5.3 seconds = 279.141 FPS

w4ett said somewhere else that this is a "8X AGP RV280 64MB 9200SE". However, 
this line from the Xorg.0.log (running AGP):
(II) RADEON(0): [agp] Mode 0x1f004e09 [AGP 0x1039/0x0741; Card 0x1002/0x5964]
indicates AFAICS that the card is running 4X.

I would suggest trying: Option "AGPMode" "8"
in xorg.conf
