[Bug 1183948] Re: Can not read/write files to walkman (MTP)
I have a similar problem with a Samsung smart phone in Ubuntu Studio 14.04. I don't use Nautilus, but I can copy files in Thunar file manager from the device connected in MTP mode to local hard drive. However, I can not open the same (source) files for reading by e.g. VLC. In terminal I can cd to the directory under /run/user/ and ls there and see I have is rw access, but I can not even copy the files by cp: cannot open for reading: Operation not supported -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1183948 Title: Can not read/write files to walkman (MTP) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1183948/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1183948] Re: Can not read/write files to walkman (MTP)
There were two problems I think, the MTP device (Sony Walkman) is no longer handled by gvfs-gphoto2 probably due to a change in the udev rules or perhaps how the default case is handled when the device isn't recognized, and a bug that has been fixed in the PPA mentioned above that dealt with problems in the way in which the files were mapped to the local file system - I think it was showing numbers for filenames among other things. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1183948 Title: Can not read/write files to walkman (MTP) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1183948/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1183948] Re: Can not read/write files to walkman (MTP)
There is nothing in 10-local.rules other than the one line I gave: $ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules ATTRS{idVendor}=="054c", ATTRS{idProduct}=="059a", NAME="WALKMAN" I share your frustrations with it suddenly failing to work with the latest version of ubuntu, I really recommend you check out Philip Langdale's site and his response to my questions - which probably mirror your own. http://intr.overt.org/blog/?p=178&cpage=1#comment-17947 This is part of one of the answers he gave me: "Now, you’re probably going to tell me that this worked before, and it’s true that gvfs-gphoto2 appears to offer normal filesystem operations but it’s all a facade, as discussed elsewhere, and it’s constantly copying files to/from /tmp when you think it’s just reading and writing. This process is fragile and not something I would endorse. But if you really want to use rsync, it’s the only way. I’d recommend using go-mtpfs in that case or adding a udev rule to avoid marking the walkman as an MTP device so that gvfs-gphoto2 gets used again." -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1183948 Title: Can not read/write files to walkman (MTP) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1183948/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1183948] Re: Can not read/write files to walkman (MTP)
You need to add a PPA to your system by the developer (Philip Langdale), his comments are worth reading: http://intr.overt.org/blog/?p=178&cpage=1#comment-17947 MTP is a protocol by Microsoft so you would expect it to work under Windows. Despite appearances your Walkman is not just a typical USB memory stick and some quite clever code has been written to make it appear that way. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol The PPA is here: https://launchpad.net/~langdalepl/+archive/gvfs-mtp You also need to edit your udev rules, in my case this involved editing this file: /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules It has a single line that simply identifies the device and nothing else: ATTRS{idVendor}=="054c", ATTRS{idProduct}=="059a", NAME="WALKMAN" To determine what the idProduct is going to be for your model you can enter 'mtp-detect' if you have it, or use 'udevadm monitor' - let us no if you need more help with that.
